Episode 1

Dance with the Dead

93 mins

DCI Tom Barnaby and DS Ben Jones investigate the death of Simon Bright who is found dead inside an old World War II vintage Humber parked at an abandoned airfield. From all appearances, the death appears to be a suicide, but the pathologist determines that the man suffered a severe blow to the head and may in fact have been unconscious when he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Simon Bright's girlfriend, Laura Sharp, is nowhere to be found, but the death of the aging village Lothario and the attempted murder of another of her friends narrows the list of possible murderers somewhat. Barnaby is convinced that one of Laura's ex-lovers is responsible but given her rather active life, the question becomes which one?

Niece Faith, gardener Miles King and housekeeper-cook Eileen Carnack and cleaner Janet Bailey each counted on a version of Rex's last will to inherit his fortune, ignoring their rivals, so each had motive believing to be the sole beneficiary. Jeremy Thacker wrote a book to promote his late mother a candidate for sainthood but claims Rex was the mystery man whose sexual abuse damaged her as a maiden. With two more murders the detectives investigate if the motive could be just envy, greed, passion or some revenge.

The Axeman Cometh

93 mins

Barnaby is delighted to tell his family and Jones about the impending reunion of blues rock band Hired Gun at the annual Midsomer Rocks festival while assigned to supervise police security for artists, roadies and music fans descend on neighboring fields. Owen Jenkins, saw his career broken 30 years ago as the media blamed his failure to find the band's still missing member Ginger Foxton. The band stays at the mansion, with butler James Hobson, gardener Desmond Harcourt and secretary-housekeeper, his wife Finola, owned by a foundation in tontine but inhabited by Gary Cooper, who still fails to look a proper gentleman. Hired Gun's lush vocalist Mimi Clifton is electrocuted on stage whilst holding on to her microphone stand, that had an added mystery wire, but Gary was scheduled to use it that time. Barnaby and Jones guess rightly other band members could be targets. Bass player Jack 'Axeman' McKinley barely survives the bomb in his motorbike, Gary reports threats including animal corpses and suggests member Ginger Foxton, presumed dead in a drunk car crash, may be alive and vindictive. The drummer drowns in the car he slept in to avoid his wife arriving drunk with Jack. DCI Barnaby and DS Jones investigate the death of Dr. Alan Delaney who was purposely run down by someone driving a pick-up truck. Delaney was driving Dr. James Kirkwood's brand new SUV and Barnaby believes Kirkwood may have been the intended victim. He doesn't have to look far to find anyone who would like to see Kirkwood dead. Jim Kirkwood and Delyth Mostyn had only recently announced they were to be married. Both had been married previously but Kirkwood is a widower and Mostin divorced. Dorothy Hutton had asked Barnaby if it's suspicious that her son-in-law James is re-marrying a "mere" four years after his first wife, her daughter Sarah, died. Barnaby assures her that Sarah's death was fully investigated and James Kirkwood was nowhere near her bedside at the time of her death. Delyth Mostyn's children are nearly apoplectic at the thought of their mother re-marrying and are absolutely opposed to the union. Then there's Clifford Rawnsley, a local farmer who had pursued Delyth but whom she rejected. The case isn't quite so simple however. Meanwhile Cully and Joyce try to convince Barnaby that their garden patio needs to be enlarged. It actually provides him with the vital clue needed to solve the case.

DCI Barnaby and DS Jones investigate the murder of Nick Cheyney, the director of a low-budget film about the French Revolution and the Scarlet Pimpernel, being filmed at Magna Manor. He is found on his film set having been decapitated in the guillotine. Cheyney was found by Jed Norris, who had only recently been hired to work as a security guard by the film's tight-fisted producer, Jack Braxton. Cheyney had also had a run-in with Danny Twyman who operates a local taxi service and who wanted Cheyney to stay away from his girlfriend, Leonie Charteris. That Cheyney fathered her child is a complicating factor. The owners of Magna Manor, Leonie's parents Terence and Diane Charteris, have spent a great deal of money on the Manor and very much want to maximize any possible returns. Then there's Raymond Clandillon, a past his prime actor who is prone to drink and to whom Cheyney would only offer a position as an extra. Then there are Gwen Morrison and Neville Hayward who definitely had a history with the dead director. There will be a second guillotining however before Barnaby can identify the killer and the motive behind the deed.
