Gary works in an office with hen-pecked George and perpetual spinster Anthea. He lives with girlfriend Dorothy, a nurse who has been trying to get him to the altar - unsuccessfully - for two years. Following a bust-up with his girlfriend Dermot,a friend of Gary,moves in as a lodger but gets behind with the rent. A new tenant Deborah takes the flat upstairs and both men seek to vie for her attention,Gary giving her what he thinks is a cook book as a present,though it turns out to be a sex manual. Dorothy is not impressed and ends up hitting him.

Episode 2

Dorothy is now seeing work colleague Graham,with whom she apparently plays a lot of chess and Gary sees the chance to win her back when he gets tickets to take her to see 'Carmen'. Dermot wants to take Deborah and so - with chess on their minds - the two men decide to have a game,the winner claiming the tickets. Gary wins,after taking advice from George,but it transpires not only that the tickets were forgeries but that Graham has no idea how to play chess either.

Episode 3

Gary and Dermot are still vying for Deborah's attention whilst Dorothy is planning a weekend away with Graham. To scupper Gary's chances with Deborah Dermot visits the hospital and tells Dorothy that Gary is pining for her. Gary, however, is more intent on impressing Deborah by installing a burglar alarm which, when activated, refuses to switch itself off and then causes a power cut. Dorothy returns but Dermot's efforts to get a date with Deborah fail nevertheless.

Episode 4

Whilst on an induction course Dermot meets Kate, the younger sister of an old flame who implicitly asks him out but he declines and then feels bad about it. He has a talk with Deborah but only ends up listening as she talks about her boyfriend in Singapore, so he asks Kate out, only to find that she is not really interested after all. As Dorothy starts to move her things out of the flat she and Gary remember old times and end up in bed together, agreeing that from here on they will have an open relationship.

Episode 5

Despite agreeing to an open relationship Gary is upset to see Dorothy is still with Graham and his humiliation is compounded as she watches him fail to chat up any women at the squash club bar. Learning that Mike, Deborah's boyfriend in Singapore, has got another woman Dermot attempts to cheer her up with a takeaway meal and a very odd 'flamenco guitarist'. Unfortunately Mike arrives and when a drunken Gary tries to remove him he head-butts him. This does lead to a sympathetic Dorothy returning to him but the down side is the fact that Dermot pawned Gary's stereo to pay for the meal.

Episode 6

When Dermot loses his job as a toy department salesman for dangling a child by his ankles Deborah employs him as a waiter in her restaurant. Following a conversation with a friend Gary believes he will be offered a better job so he and Dorothy take George and Anthea to the restaurant on Anthea's birthday to break the news. Gary feels bad as his colleagues tell him how happy they are with him but then a letter arrives to say 'No Job', a statement that Dermot communicates in mime before being hit by an irate diner whose wife he has been complimenting.
