Mac's closest friend from France, a high-ranking police inspector who recently married a San Francisco socialite, comes to town to show her off and talk business with his wealthy father-in-law. Mac can't give his buddy the royal treatment because he's just arrested a bullying lawyer for witness intimidation. The lawyer, from the inside, apparently hires a gunman to follow Mac around and fire warning shots at him. When Mac and Sally attend a fancy-dress ball, the inspector's wife (herself an old friend of Mac's) asks to talk to Mac on an outside balcony. A rifle shot rings out and she falls dead. Everyone thinks that the hired gunman fired at Mac and made a tragic miss, and the police inspector threatens to go ballistic in his search for the killer. But was Mac the real target? The plot thickens when the inspector narrowly escapes a bombing and another person -- with no ties to the gunman -- is murdered. Were the inspector, his wife or possibly both of them the targets, and why?

Mac and Sally argue about selling their house at the same time that Sally is preparing for Mac's surprise birthday party. Adding to the tension is a break in at their house. The next night during the party an earthquake hits and the only damage is to their fireplace revealing the skeletal remains of a man who was killed prior to the McMillan's and Mildred moving into the house. Soon they find out that the victim was a jewel thief who may have hidden a fortune in emeralds in their house.

Enright is forced to retire from the force due to budget cuts and shockingly not only takes a job with a private security firm, he also announces his engagement to a very attractive young lady. However, the firm he joins is also suspected of gathering personal information on various city officials including Mac and Sally and using that info for blackmail purposes. Also, while Mac is investigating the company, Sally becomes very suspicious of Charlie's fiancee and tries to find out what her real intentions are.

The Deadly Cure

Mac and crew receive a cryptic note from undercover officer, Trigamundo, during an investigation into the state's largest drug ring. At a stakeout of the Embarcadero Hotel, where a large drug buy is supposed to take place, Shields shoots Mac; Shields is taken into custody. But, their real target the top man, a.k.a. The Possum, is "tipped off" not to appear for the buy so he eludes capture. At the hospital, a wounded Mac is lying on a guerney in a corridor, heavily sedated and awaiting surgery, when Mac hears cries coming from a nearby room. Mac staggers towards the cries and sees two masked orderlies smothering a man with a pillow. Mac tries to stop them, but he is groggy and has lost a lot of blood. When Mac awakens from surgery, there are no dead bodies which support his hazy memories. Hospital personnel try to convince him and Sally that he dreamt or hallucinated the entire incident. But did he? Mac stubbornly leaves the hospital and he and Enright continue investigating. A fresh look at Trigamundo's note puts a whole new light on the case... but only if Mac can stay alive long enough to solve it.

Greed

The McMillans, Mildred and her sister Agatha go to visit a woman relative of Mildred and Agatha, a very wealthy woman who's dying -- but not quickly enough to suit one of her nephews, who's in debt to a loansharking company later described as "just this side of Murder, Incorporated." Threatened with death if he doesn't come up with the money right away, the nephew smothers the old lady in her bed. But when the will is read, the nephew isn't the prime beneficiary -- a young great-niece is. Someone soon guns down the niece, and the nephew (who's next in line for the money) is the prime suspect. But when Agatha sneaks onto the nephew's pleasure boat to investigate him, someone plants a firebomb onto the boat. The nephew agrees to save Agatha and gives her a life jacket, but can't get off himself before the engine explodes. Next, the McMillans discover that the murdered "great-niece" was an impersonator -- so Sally poses as the great-niece herself and shows up on the doorstep of the old lady's countrified financial manager, hoping he has some clues.

Point of Law

Mac begins his annual two week stint with the Naval Reserves working in the JAG office. However, instead of pushing papers as he usually does he is assigned to a case where a female supply officer named Kit Boone is accused of murdering a co-worker who she claims tried to rape her. Mac soon discovers that there is more to this case than a simple claim of attempted rape and soon discovers that Kit is a suspect in a series of thefts from the naval supply warehouse. However, he also thinks that she is covering up for her estranged husband with whom she had an argument prior to the killing. Now Mac must get to the truth and not only try to prove that his client is not only innocent of murder but of theft as well all the while he is dealing with an arrogant prosecuting attorney.
