Austrian empress Maria Theresia realizes her childish daughter Marie-Antoinette (19) isn't properly prepared, but won't hear of a plea to wait marrying her off dynastically to great rival power France's dauphin, the future Louis XVI. Even her pet dog is sent back at arrival at the border in the care of grim 'household mistress' Madame de Noailles. Meeting the royal family at the chateau of Compiègne is confusing. King Louis XV extends a warm welcome, but his spinster daughters are rude to everyone, second son (the count of) Provence as dashing as denigrating towards his sullen brother, the heir and unwilling groom Louis. Only widowed Italian princess Lamballe informally guides 'Toinette', while the king's flagrant mistress Madame du Barry promises to teach her 'the art of seduction'. The nuptial by the archbishop is an embarrassing formality, the wedding night -both disrobed in front of half the court- mortifying, Louis flees the chamber, Toinette is appalled to discover being watched through multiple peepholes, making her run off frantically.
