Linda Andrews, an internationally renowned deaf painter, is hanging one of her works in a Hawaiian Islands bank when two men burst in and demand money at gunpoint. The robbers shoot everyone upon leaving, but miss Andrews in a back room. Carol lures Magnum into a meeting with her on a pretext and asks him to protect Andrews, the sole witness and survivor of the shooting. Magnum protests, but relents when he meets Andrews while she is identifying the shooter from a police lineup. Magnum takes her to Robin's Nest, where Higgins is delighted to meet the famous artist. The situation turns more serious when one of the robbers, Jack Wilkins, makes bail. With Wilkins' attorneys suspecting there may be a witness, Carol asks Magnum to keep an eye on Wilkins. While Magnum investigates the whereabouts of Wilkins, Andrews and Higgins spend time together painting. But when Andrews glimpses a television newscast featuring a photo of her as the mysterious witness, she decides to leave the estate. In the meantime, Magnum has managed to make contact with an associate of Wilkins. When he returns, however, he discovers that Andrews has disappeared from the estate. Now Magnum must track down Andrews before Wilkins can get to her and eliminate the only witness to the bank massacre.

Inspector Jean Claude Fornier is visiting Hawaii in honor of Magnum winning the award for the best private investigator of the year. Just as Fornier is about to present the award to Magnum, the inspector collapses. When Inspector Fornier's death is ruled a murder, Magnum is determined to find those responsible. Before long Magnum finds he has some unwanted help. Luther Gillis and, one time meter maid turned private investigator, Tracy Spencer, are also on the case. Magnum tries to blow them off while he follows a lead from Fornier's notebook and comforts Carrol on the death of her lover. Magnum discovers Fornier's true mission on the islands was to investigate an international drug smuggling ring involving the Richard Lindley detective agency, Spencer's employer. As Magnum investigates further, evidence begins to point to the involvement of Spencer herself.

A mysterious caller knowing painful details from Magnum's past warns the private investigator, through a riddle, that a prostitute will be murdered. Magnum reports the call to the police. The police dismiss it as nothing more than a prank until the body of a prostitute turns up in a location fitting the riddle. Magnum deciphers the next riddle, and he and the police stake out the location. The stakeout doesn't go as planned and the killer isn't captured. Despite this, it appears another murder has been prevented. Yet the anonymous caller claims otherwise. Returning to the scene, Magnum uncovers the body of another woman. He also discovers photos, including one he believes could be the next victim. The police don't believe his theory, however, and so it's up to Magnum to find the victim and the killer before it's too late.

Higgins is headed to the estate with several guests when a truck attempts to run their car over a cliff. One of the guests, Pamela Bates, is so frightened by the incident she decides to hire a private investigator snubbing Magnum's offer as an investigator. When Amy Salyer, another of the guests, leaves the estate, despite her fear over the previous day's incident, Magnum's curiosity is piqued. Magnum follows her to a business. When Salyer leaves, she is followed by a mysterious man. Magnum manages to track Salyer down, but not without dodging bullets from Salyer's pursuer. Back at the estate, Bates' private investigator has finally arrived. To Magnum's disbelief it is none other than mystery novelist Jessica Fletcher. Despite Magnum's skepticism regarding the ability of a novelist to help solve a real-life case, it's clear time is running out when an intruder takes a shot at an estate lunch.

Attempting to serve court papers, Magnum witnesses a hit. Also a witness is Alealea, a native Hawaiian girl. Magnum saves Alealea from being killed by the hit man and is wounded in the getaway. Blacking out, Magnum later awakes on a rustic island inhabited by native Hawaiians. Magnum can't remember how or why he is on the island beyond a few details, including a girl. Strangely, no one acknowledges the existence of the girl, nor will they tell him where he is. Gradually his memory returns, and Magnum comes to realize he is on Kapu, an island forbidden to outsiders, home to native Hawaiians who shun the modern world. Magnum discovers Alealea on the island, and realizes her life is still in danger. But the islanders are determined to return Magnum as soon as possible, despite his fear it won't be long before the islanders' paradise is shattered by those looking to eliminate all witnesses to the murder.

Late to pick up his children from the airport, T.C. arrives to discover his daughter Melody has been kidnapped. T.C. reports the abduction to the FBI, but decides to handle the case himself when he grows uneasy with the FBI agent assigned to the case. The discovery of a ransom note brings a slim lead. The situation grows more complicated when T.C.'s ex-wife Tina Calvin and her boyfriend, David Crawford, arrive. Tina wishes to leave the case in the hands of the FBI. T.C. refuses and continues to handle the case with the help of his friends. Higgins offers to finance the ransom from Robin Masters' account, but when red tape interferes it appears T.C. will have to sell his business to raise the ransom. Meanwhile, Magnum and Rick discover Tina's boyfriend is deeply in debt to a high-stakes bookie on a half-million dollar business loan.

When Carol suspects her mentor, Judge Hannibal Kearns, may be in trouble, she turns to Magnum for help. Following Kearns, they see the judge meet with the defendant from his most recent case, a case the judge inexplicably threw out before Carol could even present her arguments. Magnum and Carol confront Kearns, but the judge refuses to admit anything. Late that night, Carol finds Kearns dead. Tanaka is ready to rule the case a suicide, but Carol believes otherwise. Magnum vows to find whoever is responsible. Meanwhile, Rick plans a surprise birthday party for his friend Icepick. Little does he suspect that Icepick is about to be dragged into the middle of Magnum's investigation into the death of Judge Kearns.

Higgins goes on a survivalist trip on an island with a small group of young offenders as part of a program aimed at improving their self-esteem. But he has to call upon his survival skills much more than expected when a planned escape by the boys doesn't go as intended and sees the leader of the trip shot dead, leaving Higgins being hunted down on the island by the three young convicts. Back on the Estate, Magnum, with Rick and T.C., plans to take advantage of Higgins' absence by holding a big party, but the get-together seems ill-fated from the start.

Magnum must disentangle the mystery while contending with the hostile Inspector Wolf. The evidence: Footprints in dust, a piece of broken teacup, a miniature dog statuette. The suspects: Alicia, the young, beautiful, romantically starved wife. Christine, the young, beautiful, spoiled, rebellious daughter eager to be free from her father's control. Myron Bentley, a minister secretly married to Christine, with a past he'd rather keep hidden. And finally, Sam Caldwell, Maxwell's attorney, cold and hostile, who seems altogether too eager to push Magnum off the case. Before digging too deeply, a mysterious file on Bentley's past shows up at Magnum's office. Not long after, Bentley follows. Determined to claim the papers, Bentley confronts Magnum and is shot by an unknown gunman.

Sgt. Michael Doheny (Frank Sinatra), a retired New York cop, learns that his beloved granddaughter was kidnapped and murdered by incredibly vicious sexual predators during his retirement celebration. Sgt. Doheny eventually tracks the two killers to Hawaii and enlists Magnum's help without telling him why he wants to find the men. One of the killers flees Doheny and is run over by a bus. In a quiet, intense way, Doheny describes the killing to Magnum and makes it perfectly clear that he will kill the other murderer if he finds him, no matter what the circumstances. Magnum goes along hoping to find the killer first and spare Doheny from a murder rap.
