Improvise

With Mac having happily taken on a new life helping a village in Nigeria where he's in love with a native teacher, he is met by his father James 'Oversight', who tells him they must rescue Jack in dire trouble. Video has surfaced of Jack working with Belarus' former dictator Roman Mareks, whom he helped to depose and who is now trying to buy an army from Ukrainian crime king Serhiy Yaroslav to reclaim his position. With help from Bozer, Leanna and Riley, Mac and his father are able to locate Jack, only to see him captured by Belarus' current leader Oleg Vadim. After this dangerous, yet last-yard successful mission, Matty tells James MacGyver that the Phoenix Foundation really needs his son and convinces him to consider stepping down from his position as Oversight. Meanwhile, Jill has been heading up an investigation into locating Murdoc and is later fatally trapped by him.

After Murdock murdered Jill, Mac officially rejoins the Phoenix team for the funeral and asks to head up the attempt to capture Murdoc. Matty assigns Leanna, Riley, and Bozer to pilfer the cell phone from a criminal liaison who is in L.A., knowing that the phone will be loaded with contacts from the criminal underworld. Mac soon checks up on Jack, who reassembles his old Delta Force team to rescue their fellow member Caleb Worthy, who is on the run in Honduras after being falsely accused of terrorism, not eligible for help from Uncle Sam. Mac helps 'recruiting' the veterans one by one, often overcoming family considerations. Worthy was actually tricked into joining double-crossing contractor Lawlor, as they only find out after joining his team. The fiend smells a rat, so Mac -aa instant honorary team member and inventive hero- must improvise to escape and overpower his men, despite Jack loosing his smartphone with crucial data.

Bozer + Booze + Back to School

Matty has Mac, Bozer, Riley and Leanna pose as college transfer students to find out who is recruiting students at Western Tech University to unwittingly assist in terrorist operations, using new transparent bomb technology. Suspicous professor Elliot Lambeau proves only guilty of a lesser crime. Mac and Riley work out the mails come through well-meaning student Simon Jones, and from who. Jack takes Riley's place providing backup for Billy Colton, who tries to collar a bail jumper and test as Jack as potential in-law, but the victim gains Jack's sympathy.

While Jack is being debriefed by the CIA for his Belarus exploits and Leanna is on another assignment, Bozer manning to command post while Matty is in DC, Mac and Riley are left to help a tanker truck full of liquid oxygen make it to a children's hospital in the breakaway Adjara region of southwest Georgia. Complicating the mission are rebel forces blocking the roads and criminals who want to steal the valuable contents of the truck, with Vasil, the father who takes a truck to save his son with their help, playing a double game. Mac decide against evacuation to Turkey and improvises his own oxygen system in hospital. Riley's example convinces Mac to accept his father's lunch invitation, bonding over his youth memories.

Murdoc has kidnapped Mac's Nigerian girlfriend Nasha to force Mac to help locate his son Cassian, while revealing his ex-wife Amber, also a hired killer, has escaped from a Serbian prison and is now trying to get their boy back. While they're tracking leads to find Cassian in Colombia, Jack and Bozer search where Nasha is being held. Amber double-crosses Murdoc and escapes with millions of dollars but meanwhile Mac has rescued Cassian and arrests Murdoc, who agrees to return to federal prison in exchange for The Phoenix placing Cassian in a protected home.

After choosing to believe -unlike her own superiors- British intelligence officer Eileen Brennan, who claims to recognize his voice as captive of the clueless Russian in Tchechenia, and in Jack's absence, Mac, his EOD buddy Charlie Robinson, Riley and Bozer are sent with her to locate and capturing the elusive criminal. Brennan is obsessed personally by the Ghost, stating he killed her parents, but on site it turns out he was already liberated by the IRA, and went to Paris. Mac later discovers his brilliantly trapped lair, but also that Brennan is Irish and is the Ghost's daughter.

Matty mobilizes Mac, Jack and Bozer to track the disappearance of a deadly virus sample from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Mac finds the file was stolen by researcher Dr. Luka Poppa. The chase leads the team to his native Romania, where he is planning to use the virus to avenge the death of his brother in a mining accident on insurance fraudster owner Ionescu. In Arizona, Billy takes Riley on a road trip, encountering a car thief along the way, as the trip ends surprising her.

Matty reveals her husband Ethan Raines has been deep undercover the criminal terrorist organization S Company for eight years, incommunicado for the last years, but due to a broken code his status as a CIA agent will get discovered, so teams MacGyver must find and extract him first. They travel to Indonesia, where Ethan is still undercover. After finding him just before he would be executed, the team learns that Ethan has a new wife and a young daughter, which he gained to keep his cover. Matty later tells Ethan to rejoin his wife and child, who both need him.

Phoenix finally got a tip about The Fence, a mysterious crime agent who hires thieves one-off to finance terrorists. Riley poses as his latest intended recruit Charlotte Cole, a master thief, who is held by Matti. The mission is to steal a dirty bomb from the Moscow branch of a multinational. Cole agrees to avoid prosecution by coming along to input her tricks as she stole from there before. Only on site it becomes clear the bomb is placed and activated. Mac manages to disarm it, but is arrested as Cole cuffed him. Released, he leads the team's chase for Cole and the bomb. She is tracked to a meeting with the Fence, where Riley again poses as 'the real Cole' while Mac and a SWAT team improvise, with surprising results.

Wilderness + Training + Survival

Survival expert mac takes ill-prepared Bozer and Riley on the agency's mandatory forest training weekend in nowhere, Washington. That's bad enough for the city-folk, but after the first campfire night Mac is missing, as tracks indicate abducted. His captors are a ruthless pack of robbers who need to retrieve a huge crate full of banknotes they dumped from an airplane. The leader forces Mac to deal with the terrain and search for the treasure, disposing of his cahoots as fits, and notices the duo looking for Mac. Meanwhile Jack accompanies Mattie to help her retired ex Ethan Raines relocate with his family, their witness protection cover having been blown, but the wife only now finds out about his first marriage.

They find a guard was murdered and a tunnel dug to intrude and steal pea seeds from North Korea. They go after the thief, finding he's not after any nation but the pea's toxin for very revenge on the Eats European organized crime king. Mac meanwhile has Bozer, whom Leanna assists to help, tail Mac's aloof father Oversight, suspecting he is hiding something, but get shaken and warned off. Mac later finds him in a hospital, receiving cancer treatments.

Murdoc is consulted in jail after his presumed-dead hitman mentor Nicholas Helman is identified committing new murders on various security videos. Murdoc can't resist taunting Mac and his father Oversight, who refuses to discuss hailmary cancer therapy now they're back on speaking terms. Murdoc's tips on Helman's MO prove solid, except the one on an FBI prison transport Phoenix chooses to set a trap. Helman actually intrudes the black jail to take his bloody revenge on Murdoc, who counted on this fighting chance to escape.

On a mission to catch an arms smuggler in the Balkans, Mac and Desi find and stand by Adnan and his Syrian refugee family, who have been tricked and abandoned by a ruthless gang f human traffickers, finally could make it to Croatia but returned to Bosnia to take a wounded fiend to a hospital, but fell into a sinkhole. Mac cranes them out, takes them to the nearest village clinic, improvises surgical equipment and fights off the armed traffickers. Back home, Bozer is proud to get the keys of Oversight's fancy jeep, but finds it rigged by a master bomber so crafty even Oscar can't disarm it, but Riley's ITC skills provide a way out.

No-Go + High-Voltage + Rescue

Ben Hagan waved a job to travel around South America on gap year with his girl Isabella, but they are reported missing by their parents. State Department can't officially help as they ignored a ban on participating in an extreme dares game. Phoenix volunteers to send team Mac, which has to fight a local thugs gang for the last maps. Oversight gets a clue from Ben's folks to pick the right of four sites. Mac braves his acrophobia to get clues on a Brazilian power tower. That leads to the Buenos Aires sports stadium. There they realize the kids, including various other daredevil pairs, were lured and abducted by ruthless South African slave trader Derek Diresta and must improvise to overpower his goons and free the teens.

Treason + Heartbreak + Gum

Group-S blackmails Matty's ex Ethan: his new wife an daughter for a list of undercover CIA operatives, which only director Huang has, so he plans to steal his phone. Matty agrees to help, behind Oversights' back, in case Mac's team fails to locate and overpower the fiends, with a trail to Paris. Meanwhile Riley is on a Colton mission and happens to notice Billy regularly calls with another woman, dumping him without debate. Mac gets to the wife, but the daughter is kept separately. Huang and Oversight help combining both agencies resources to take down the whole gang, while Mac handles to handover.

He's identified as brilliant former intelligence agent Elliot Mason and arrested for too easily. Indeed, interrogated by unusually hostile Mac about his thirst for revenge for the fatal abandonment of his marine son by Oversight, who Mac can't forgive that despite it having saved his own life, the fiend deploys a plan to escape and strike inside the Phoenix HQ.
