But a sports paper publishes his picture so Pete tells Mac he needs to get to Jimmy before the mob does. But Ralph who has risen in the mob learns of this and sets out to finish the job. Mac gets to Jimmy just ans Ralph and his partner Sal arrive. With Mac's help they escape. So Ralph decides to make Jimmy come to him by grabbing his daughter and grandson.

An insurance investigator who is a friend of Mac's, who's been tracking a diamond thief all over the place comes to Mac telling him that he suspects that the thief is a diplomat which means he has diplomatic immunity which means he can't be arrested. He says he thinks he can find him, but because his employers pulled him off the case, he needs Mac's help. But shortly after talking to him, he was run over. Mac suspects the thief found out he was close. So Mac goes to a function at the embassy to learn what he can about the man. While there he meets a woman who seems to be there for the same reason. He later learns she's his friend's sister and they try to expose the man.

Mac is enjoying a vacation in the Alps sharing a hot air balloon ride with his blonde friend Heidi. Pete is at the landing spot with the news that the highly secret, highly experimental GX-1 has gone down over East Germany. It is a prototype stealth aircraft with a radar-deflecting skin and a special cooling system to help it defeat IR detecting equipment. Accompanying Pete is Nikki Carpenter. He wants her to pose as MacGyver's wife to make entry into East Germany easier. They scrap with each other like cats but agree to team up until they have crossed the border. The Soviets are vitally interested in the wreckage to learn about the cooling system, so Mac is to destroy any wreckage to prevent them learning anything. Starkoss, a psychic from the Petroskia Institute in Moscow, is helping the Soviets search for the crash site. Mac takes to the hills with his field gear while NIkki hangs around the Aspenhaus resort. She spots Starkoss with Colonel Markov and overhears their plans for helicopter assistance. She tries to find Mac despite being ill-equipped for mountain travel. Unfortunately, the Soviets have found the crash site before Mac. As he watches their activity through binoculars, Starkoss looks right at him. Later, he and Nikki approach the dead pilot's body and find a note that reads: "Follow me. Starkoss". A short while later, Starkoss manages to meet with them in the woods, out of hearing of his Soviet comrades. He tells them he is tired of being a freak for their use and wants to defect to the West. MacGyver agrees to help him escape with them. After blowing up the main pieces of wreckage, Mac, Nikki and Starkoss flee to an abandoned mine site. Using welding equipment, stove pipe, fabric scraps, and molten nylon, Mac fabricates a hot air balloon that has a 3-person basket. They get airborne just as the Soviets return from searching for him. They manage to get out of range before any of the bullets find them. Drifting toward the border, the tanks run out of gas. The balloon is dropping and won't clear an important ridge unless lightened. Mac tosses the welding tanks and has Nikki jump with a reserve parachute. The basket scrapes the trees but makes it over the ridge.

MacGyver goes to a small town in Arkansas to bail Jack Dalton out of another predicament. MacGyver ends up getting arrested along with Jack and sent to a prison camp where there are forced to dig in an abandoned mine for hidden millions of dollars.

When someone tries to kill Nikki she goes to MacGyver but tells him it's OK. Mac goes to Pete and asks to see Nikki's file and see if someone from her past wants to kill her. He tells her and she feels that he sticking his nose in things that are not of his concern. Later the guy makes another attempt. Mac finds something he left behind which makes him think it might have something to do with something that happened recently. She bumped into a guy who took her wallet which is how he found he. It seems like a bomb went off nearby where she bumped into the guy. So Mac thinks the guy is the one who planted the bomb and is worried that she can identify him.

When a satellite carrying a genetic experiment crashes to earth MacGyver is sent in to recover it. When he arrives he discovers that the experiment mutated in space and now ages animals at a vast rate. It is taken back to the lab but the scientist in charge doesn't want to destroy it.

Mac tries to make them see sense, but another playing gets comatose after a fall, disgusting Derek, who wants to leave the sport for the wrong reasons. Mac and his old coach come to the rescue.

They escape and Pete Thornton, who guessed what happened, flies over to mount an operation to infiltrate the illegal auction, while the fiends fall out and Mac already it caught at their wine estate hideout.

Toberman initially refuses to testify, then reconsiders, but is discredited in court by his unfortunate war past and even staged for the murder Faber commits on a henchman.

In the partially hired hangar, they find a baby boy, abandoned by the mother Katie as 'Jack Jr.', with a packet of cash- alas fake, the stolen real plates are included. Jack initially denies paternity, but soon falls for the kid, Mac improvises in his house and involves the Phoenix Foundation, as FBI and double-crossed counterfeiters are after Katie and baby Jack as leverage.

MacGyver has a close call while trailing a couple of suspects into a bar. His presence is noted but the trigger-man misses him, taking out the mirror behind the bar. Then the gun jambs. MacGyver needs a break after such a close call. He looks up Karen Miller, a serious girlfriend from his college days. They broke up because she was looking for something more permanent in a relationship. Mac flies by float plane to her station within Chinook National Park. Although she gives him a warm greeting, he is distressed to find man-sized boots in her living quarters. She admits that she has a live-in boyfriend named Sam. She tells him that she has moved on from their together days. They go for a walk and find evidence that poachers have taken out a big grizzly. She is happy to let him take a break in Chinook, but she has to investigate the case. She suggests he might want to consider taking a bus back home. In the nearby wild game restaurant, Mac overhears the poachers try to sell the owner the poached bear stakes. He goes after Karen to let her know about the guilty parties. He manages to hop into the bed of their pickup truck and hide under a tarp. When the hunters set out for deer, Mac goes in search of Karen. She encounters the poachers and initiates the arrest procedures when one of them shoots her. It is a grazing wound to her left side, but hampers her ability to walk without a lot of assistance. Mac and Karen head for the Base 9 ranger station to make a radio report. The poachers figure this is their objective and are able to take a shortcut to get to the cabin first. On the way, they encounter a Mac-devised trip wire that injects one of them with tranquilizer. At the cabin, Mac uses Karen's coat on a tree as a diversion so that he can get close enough to dart their leader with an improvised dart gun made from a flashlight cylinder and the elastic cord from Karen's jacket.

Max must protect the knave while they prove it's the doing of a criminal takeover-candidate and his inside man, the tycoon's right man and interim CEO Raymond Ling, who send assassins to the monastery and the family mansion.
