Living with policeman Rob and her two stroppy school-kids Lucy and Tom, Kate Dickenson is a registrar in Leeds. To the annoyance of officious colleague Judy Kate makes hasty arrangements for the dying Jenny to marry Simon, the father of her baby but is suspicious of Iranian student Amir and pregnant Slovenian Kristina, who want to marry but cannot speak each other's language. Kate is promoted to superintendent but the jealous Judy informs her that she has evidence of an indiscretion Kate committed with deputy registrar Rick. whilst another, married, colleague James announces that he is a cross-dresser.

Kate and Rob have a full house with his son Liam and James, thrown out by his wife, staying and their marriage plans are jeopardized by news that Rob is not divorced. Furthermore Judy's blackmail forces Kate to decline promotion and Kate also finds herself officiating at a same-sex marriage due to Judy's homophobia, as well as holding up the bereaved Simon. She does manage to reveal the truth about Kristina and Amir's wedding but is perturbed by recalcitrant daughter Lucy's behaviour.

Having discovered the reason for Lucy's actions Kate decides to spend more time with her family, a motive for declining promotion but she is shocked when the tell-tale escapade with Rick is made public. Judy denies responsibility to her boss Matthew but Kate's other colleagues threaten to resign if she and Rick are suspended and their jobs are saved, along with Kate's promotion. Kate also assists Rob and his colleague Anne-Marie in linking Katrina and Amir's sham marriage to a more sinister case but Judy is aware that Rob has yet to discover Kate's indiscretion.

Kate intercepts a USB addressed to Rob, containing the incriminating evidence, and hits out at Judy, who denies sending it . With the sham marriage linked to trafficking and murder the police stand by at Kristina's wedding to Amir but Amir has been tipped off and declines to get married. Kristina however has helpful information to further the investigation. Jamie is shocked when his wife Sarah announces that she will be taking the children and move away whilst Kate is apprehensive when Rob asks her to look at a message on his phone. Rick also admits his marriage is on shaky ground and Kate believes Judy has deliberately messed up on a Lesbian wedding.

Kate and Rob agree to marry as his divorce is finalised but he is annoyed by bad publicity regarding the police intervention at the sham marriage. Arriving at work Kate is confronted by Rick's wife Olivia who has received photos of the CCTV footage and, though angry with Judy, gets her on side to expose the sex traffickers. Kate gets Rick to conduct her marriage but he finds an obstacle, leading him to imagine a future with her, which confuses her. Meanwhile James gives up cross-dressing in order to see his family.

Having discovered Kate's indiscretion thanks to Olivia Rob walks out on her and Rick also tells her he is thinking of moving to Brighton. She is consoled by James, who is given encouragement by his sons over his dilemma. Judy helps to trap the brains behind the traffickers, leading to the identity of the murderer and also atones for her response to the same sex wedding. Thus matters are satisfactorily resolved at the registry office but Kate still has to sort out her personal life.
