It's moving day for the Robinson party when Nerim the space miner cracks the planet's core while blasting for cosmonium, quintessence of the living force that's far more precious than diamonds. Despite Nerim's assurances to the contrary, the planet is doomed, forcing him to gamble his precious cosmonium with covetous Dr. Smith for a working thruster control to get off before it explodes.

Surviving a run-in with what looks like a giant steaming meatball in space (cosmic dust), Dr. Smith announces the sighting of a familiar star, which he'll only share if Prof. Robinson promises to use that information to return to Earth rather than venture on to Alpha Centauri. What Smith doesn't share is that the information isn't his and that the sun currently stands between them and Earth. In forcing the situation his way, Smith jettisons the ship's fuel, necessitating a stop at an Earth refueling barge they can now locate. Besides fuel, they unknowingly pick up a green space alien who feeds on it, a cooing green beauty swimming in space who begins singing a siren song to seduce Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith, thinking a pleasant voice means they've circled back to Earth, leads the Jupiter 2 to land on an automated planet, home world to the Cybernetics Kingdom, which only prizes humans for their manual dexterity in factory work. The Supreme Brain conducts a hearing on the Robinson robot, whereby the later forsakes his human masters to join the cybernetic world, leaving Dr. Smith and Will to labor over machine parts on an assembly line. Back at the ship, John and Don discover that Smith has left them nearly defenseless, but they also discover a double-agent in their midst. Against the Robinsons' bid for freedom, the planet launches a missile in protest.
