Episode 1
Unquiet Mind

Serial killer Wayne Durell is being driven by Walt and Vic to a rendezvous with an FBI agent Burke. Durell had murdered at least eight Native Americans, one of whom is a young boy Walt promised to find, to harvest their organs and sell on the black market. They meet Agent Burke at a rural diner where a group of other prisoners is waiting to be sent to a federal prison. They make an outing to a grave site where yet another missing Native American body is expected to be recovered. It is that of young Theo Half Moon, a Northern Cheyenne boy who Walt had promised his best to find. They return to the restaurant where Burke orders club sandwiches for everyone, including the prisoners. Vic and Walt eat theirs as they drive back ahead of an approaching storm. Vic takes a bite and says, "Ouch. I hit a toothpick." Walt glances at it and immediately turns his rig around. "That's not a toothpick!" It was a lock pick. Someone in the restaurant obviously was a plant to help Durell escape. When they arrive back at the restaurant, the FBI agent is dead, the cook is dead, and the prison van is missing along with the waitress. Walt knows which way the van headed as they did not meet it on their return. They drive in pursuit, eventually finding the van abandoned at the residence of a county resident whom Walt knows. He indicates that Durell and two others escaped into the mountains of Absaroka County in a snow grooming, tracked vehicle. Walt decides to track Durell on foot in a snowstorm and sends Vic back to the office with his rig. In town, Vic tangles with the FBI agent in charge, who seems to not care about Walt's welfare. Vic punches the FBI agent and gets banned from the station. Meanwhile, Branch and Henry set out on horseback after Walt. During the pursuit, Walt has hallucinations of several people helping him in their own ways - the young murder victim, Henry, Cady and Detective Fales. He eventually finds the waitress who admits to putting the lock picks in the sandwiches. She believes he is in love with her. Walt tells her that she is just being used. Thanks to a blood trail, Walt follows it to an abandoned mine shaft and a crate full of Durell's black market profits. Longmire and Durell fight until they are totally exhausted.

A trespassing mountain biker calls for help after taking a tumble and dislocating his knee cap. In reviewing the video that the biker shot during his ride, Vic notices it was not a rock that caused the spill, but a human body. A Basque shepherd, Marco Vayas, and his dog are dead on his wooded, sheep-grazing property. It takes an observation from Ferg that the herder hod no water container. This leads to Walt discovering that he had been poisoned by hemlock in a nearby well. Walt finds a photo of a young Latina woman in Marco's crude, one-room home and takes it to show to Marco's brothers. They say he never married to woman who was from South America. But Walt notices that the photo has a local background. He goes to see a local matchmaker who confirms that Marcos wed the girl, but that they were not living together because of bad feelings from the brothers. Walt also learns that Marcos was about to sell his land to a lumber company that Jacob Nighthorse represents. Walt and Vic find one of the Vayas brothers trying to get information from his wife by forcing her head into the water in a well. Walt must sort out who poisoned Marco. He dupes the wife into thinking that hemlock was also in that well and insists she tell him the truth before he can take her for medical attention. She confesses to the murder, planned because she thought Marco was going to sell his property, resulting in less income for the family. Meanwhile in Denver, Cady learns from Detective Fales the details about how her mother was murdered and that the killer was also killed. When asked how Walt has dealt with his wife's death, she mentions that Walt might confide in Henry. Walt receives a call that Henry is now on Fales' list. Henry implies to Walt that he killed the murderer because Walt was unable. They share a drink as a silent vow to protect Henry's secret, as well as Walt's original intent.
