DS Vivienne Cole expects to lead the investigation but is shocked when DI David Bradford takes over, as he has been on leave since the disappearance of his wife.

Groom-to-be Mitchell MacDonald is fatally attacked in an alleyway on his stag night, suspicion falls upon his troublesome future stepson Will Holt (18), who went missing after the attack, has disappeared without trace. Video footage confirms doubts about the testimony of Will's father Jacob Holt, a former acquaintance of DI Bradford. When Will finally resurfaces with a near-amnesiac hangover, he confesses having killed Mitchell, as his daughter Tamsin claimed that Mitchell was a non-prosecuted pedophile, who never informed the bride, Jacob's ex Helen Holt, having left Scotland and his career as deputy school principal for a temp job in London insurance. Forensic however suggest Will didn't do it, Helen confides Jacob isn't his biological father. Trainee constable Billie meets up for a drink after work with witness Amber Saunders (episode 1), sharing a steamy kiss.

Well-reputed hospital doctor Adam Garrick is found murdered and 'ritually' tucked in bed on his houseboat. Prime suspect is the anonymous 999 caller who reported the death, soon identified as nurse Eleanor Kemp. . Her recent husband, Adam's friend and their hospital colleague Xavier Kemp, is furious to find out Adam apparently had an affair with her, and found the corpse without reporting it. But when Eleanor provides an alibi for the time of the murder, Billie enlists Amber's help to track down Adam's alcoholic brother Sammy, who has been sleeping rough after leaving prison for a lengthy sentence for a fatal car crash, and also failed to mention having passed, initially swearing Adam was already dead. Despite a confession from Sammy, there arises serious doubt that he is telling the truth, also based on the way the body was positioned after the murder. It seems whoever killed Adam lovingly tucked him in and even kissed him on the forehead, leading the detectives to believe it could be the brothers' just-widowed mother Anne Garrick.
