The Lockes, following the death of the father, come to live at the Locke ancestral mansion, called Key House. Most enthused of the three kids is youngest Bode, who soon discovers a voice in a well willing to be his special friend. As his brooding older siblings focus on entering a new school, Bode learns that the house is full of magical keys that whisper to him to be found. The voice in the well proves to be no friend, and the family's mother finds herself caught in an almost certain lethal trap.

Trapper / Keeper

While a newly discovered key challenges Bode to figure out what it does, he baits a steel-toothed trap for his next encounter with Echo. Tyler's preference for his new hockey teammates (who later venture to lead him astray) outweighs any brotherly duties towards Kinsey's emotional welfare. Nina hears of a past tragedy in her late husband's adolescence, but it's something he never spoke about and something of which his brother Duncan says he isn't even aware. At least both Bode and Tyler meet new allies, while Kinsey tries to help out Scot's horror movie when a haughty actress quits.

The Locke kids go on a few head trips (Bode's and Kinsey's) thanks to the Head Key, to discover their father's sea monster story had a different version for each offspring. Injuries can occur here, as Tyler discovers after an attack by a ferocious figure in Kinsey's head. Echo acquires a second key, as does Bode, who thereby meets a departed ancestor. Tyler loses his cool after a hockey game, Nina discovers a troubling connection with a symbol scribbled in Rendell's yearbook, and Ellie visits the well house.

The Keepers of the Keys

Having literally murdered and buried her own anger, Kinsey becomes a new girl, albeit a little too direct and insensitive. Initially alarmed, Tyler is impressed and uses the Head Key to put knowledge in his head to woo Jackie. With Echo at large with the Anywhere Key, Bode mounts a defense using Double Bubble in all the Key House keyholes. With Ellie's help, Nina unseals Rendell's hidden ping pong room.

Family Tree

The Keys begin whispering to Tyler and Kinsey, not just Bode, leading to the Music Box Key that controls others (and another Key with links to preserved memories). Using the Music Box Key to humiliate a bully creates a rift between Kinsey and Tyler. Bode gets in trouble for taking protection to school, Nina struggles to understand how Ellie has a chest scar identical to her late husband's, and Scot wants Kinsey to use her powers for good.

As sympathetic townsfolk drop off food for the Lockes, Bode has an uncomfortable encounter with Rufus and Ellie's secret house guest, Dodge visits Erin with the Head Key hoping to be lead to the Omega Key, Scot thinks Gabe might have replaced him in Kinsey's heart, and Tyler wants to visit the Drowning Caves.
