As the FBI investigates the apparent accidental death of an investigative reporter, Brian proves able to work out it's a crime to cover up a more elaborate plot, even if that requires throwing off his office guards and roaming about the city, and again despite a threat that would get him fired.

Meanwhile, Brian struggles with video messages left to himself from "Pill Brian," warning against sharing with Rebecca what he's learned about her late father's deeper connection to NZT.

Deducing that the Legion needs lots of immediate cash, Brian and the bureau track down Clay Meeks and try to determine how the Legion's objective can be reached through international politics, global warming and murder. All the while, as more people die, Brian's condition worsens.
