Stephen decides he must learn if this was merely coincidence or whether Allison's husband's will might have some connection with the three men's subsequent brilliant careers.

Nelson Wylie arranges for his vain wife Leda to have her portrait painted, not realizing that there is both romantic history and bad blood between her and the man he has chosen to paint her, Paul Corby. Leda resists the idea, but Nelson insists. Paul paints the portrait, but promises it will contain her spirit, her vanity and dishonesty. When the portrait is completed, it shows Leda's image standing holding a bloody knife. Displayed at the Wylie's home, it disturbs Nelson, who has it moved from the living room to the wall above Leda's bed. But the very superstitious Leda believes that something extraordinary is happening. Anything that occurs to the painting, she suspects, will happen to her. Already, cuts and scratches on the painting are being replicated on Leda's body. Nelson dismisses these notions as more superstition, but Leda is not convinced.
