Episode 1

Teacher Laura Nielson, recently split from policeman boyfriend Tom Bailey, is encouraged by her sister Katy to date surgeon Andrew Earlham, a lonely widower and father of her unruly pupil Luke. Next day Andrew tells friends the date went well but Laura rushes to tearfully inform Katy that he raped her. After a forensic examination Laura gives her account to DI Harmon and DS Maxwell, who arrest Andrew but he protests that the sex was consensual. Laura moves in with Katy and her husband Liam, who is suspicious of Laura's story, given an incident in her past whilst Katy and Tom have a secret of their own. Meanwhile, against her sister's advice, Laura posts on Andrew's Facebook page that he is a rapist.

Seeing Laura's post Andrew reassures his young son Luke of his innocence before ringing Laura and getting a tirade of accusations. Aware her sister's actions could jeopardize the case Katy asks Tom to intervene but his discovery that Andrew's wife committed suicide eleven years earlier after a row does not impress the investigating officers and backfires on Laura, who, like Andrew, is receiving Facebook messages, reviling them both. Andrew, however, is thrown an apparent life-line when a man called Dennis Walters phones him, to give him information on Laura's past.

As Laura returns home Andrew is visited by Dennis Walters, who tells him that Laura accused him of sexual harassment when they taught together but ultimately withdrew the complaint. He tells the police, who drop the current case but Andrew's reaction troubles DI Harmon. At school Laura discovers that Luke has had sex with fellow pupil Madeka, causing a pregnancy scare and asking her not to tell her father. Consequently Laura asks Andrew for his help, which he gives. Meanwhile Tom's clumsy attempt to make Andrew back off backfires when Andrew tells him he knows about the affair with Katy.

Episode 4

Laura seeks out Felicity, mother of Andrew's late wife Mary, in Edinburgh to find out more about her suicide but is shown the door when she explains the reason for her visit. She also speaks to Mary's business partner Catherine, who reveals that Mary may have killed herself on learning that Andrew forced himself on her during their affair but refuses to support Laura. Returning home Laura receives a letter from Andrew's solicitor suggesting she changes schools. Katy agrees, whilst continuing to see Tom behind Laura's back.
Episode 5

Laura discovers Katy and Tom's affair, resulting in Katy's husband Liam leaving her. Meanwhile Vanessa Harmon is unwise enough to accept a drink from Andrew, leading to a trip to hospital whilst Andrew hides a bag in his mother's shed. Laura then turns the tables on Andrew by drugging him and tying him up, threatening castration until he admits his infidelity caused Mary's suicide. However he breaks free and goes after her, pointing out to her how Vanessa, now in the same position as Laura, cannot arrest him.
Episode 6

Fearful that Vanessa will ultimately be believed Andrew asks Luke to lie for him and he is consequently released without charge. Three months later Liam and Katy are still living apart, Vanessa is pregnant and Laura has a new boyfriend Ian when she sees Andrew with another woman Charlotte, whom she warns about him. However Charlotte is a police officer, offering herself as bait to trap him but he is wise to her. As a result he gets too cocky, taunting Laura and inadvertently providing her with the means to expose him.
