Wally's Dinner Date

Thu, Sep 27, 196230 mins

As Wally has accepted invitation after invitation to dinner at Julie Foster's house, Ward and June believe it would be proper for Wally to repay Julie's kindness by taking her out to dinner. When Wally learns what his parents want him to do, he, despite never having taken a girl on a formal dinner date, thinks that it is a good idea. Ward and June also believe it would be nice for Wally to allow Julie to decide what she wants to do, such as the choice of which restaurant. Regardless of if she is aware, Julie chooses what is considered one of the most expensive restaurants in town and one outside of Wally's budget. After getting advice from his father to explain the situation to Julie and have her pick a more modestly priced restaurant, Wally feels pinned between a rock and a hard place when he learns from Julie that she has already told all her girlfriends where they're going, which makes it more difficult to back out of taking her there. Through the process, Wally learns that there is more to the protocol of formal dinner dates than just choosing a restaurant, some of that protocol which end up being handled by others without his knowledge.

It's Wally's seventeenth birthday, and he's hoping that his parents will keep to their promise made a few years back that they'll sign his driver's license application. Wally's concerns about them possibly not signing are founded as June believes Wally is still too young. But never having gone back on a promise made to either of their sons, they agree to sign, especially after they hear that Wally will be going through the driving program offered through the school, it being the only class taught by Mr. Barnsdall. Beyond the general nerves associated with learning how to drive, Wally faces a few extra pressures. One is the overly cautious advice June is always providing. And two is Shirley Fletcher, a girl who is taking the practical part of the lessons with Wally. Driving seems to come naturally to Shirley. As Shirley does everything in the driving lesson first, she can't help but continually comment to Wally on how easy everything is. As the exam day arrives, Shirley's results add an extra layer of pressure. Regardless of Wally passing or failing, June just hopes that the thought of Wally being behind the wheel will become easier for her over time.

Tell It to Ella

Thu, Nov 8, 196230 mins

Beaver returns home from a trip to the library at 10 o'clock on a school night, which is past his curfew and especially troublesome since the library closed at 9 o'clock. When Beaver returns home, he is punished by his parents: he is no longer allowed out on school nights, especially as his school work is not up to snuff. A sullen Beaver believes this punishment is unfair and unjust, especially as his friends Mike and Kevin, who were also out with him that night, got no reprimand whatsoever, and as such have much more freedom than him. Furthermore, the grounding interferes with his ability to go to the jalopy races with Mike and Kevin, for which they got free tickets. Eddie gives Beaver the idea to write to Ella of the "Tell It to Ella" advice column in the newspaper, as Ella seems often to side with her young letter writers in disputes involving their parents. Although Eddie has thoughts of Beaver writing a lopsided letter in his own favor, Beaver decides to write as balanced a letter as he knows how. He plans to shame his parents by showing them the column when Ella answers in his favor. Beaver doesn't even contemplate the possibility of Ella siding with his parents, which would leave him in a last minute scramble to figure out what to do about Ella's advice, which Ward and June read all the time.

Wally has every intention of telling his parents the truth, and allowing them to decide what course of action to take to repair the vehicle. But advice from Eddie and Lumpy results in Wally at least getting an estimate on the repair. The mechanic is able to fix the car, within Wally's budget (with a little help from Eddie and Lumpy) all before their parents get home. In large part because of the donation of the three suits, Beaver ends up winning the citizenship award. When Ward and June find out about what happened to the suits, they know they have to get them back. Although no one in the family wants to look like "the Indian giver" in Beaver's words and since it really was not Beaver's fault, Ward is chosen to retrieve the suits. Still, Beaver is worried how this retrieval of the three donated items will reflect upon him and the issuance of the award.

Family Scrapbook

Thu, Jun 20, 196330 mins

While cleaning the house, June finds some family memorabilia which no one has seen in years. Among those items is a scrapbook of photographs. Ward and June think it would be a fun idea for the entire family to sit around and look through the scrapbook together. In looking at the photographs, they collectively reminisce about the incidents behind the photos: Beaver's first note from school; Beaver once believing that a married neighbor lady was in love with him; Wally's first shave; Beaver running away from home for being what he considered unfairly punished for Larry drilling a hole in their garage wall; one of Eddie's many overly polite greetings when he entered their house; their dealings with Andy the alcoholic; Beaver and Larry getting caught reading Larry's sister's diary; Beaver's nervous night when Miss Landers came to the house for dinner; and Wally's disastrous run for class president. As June and Ward remark about how Wally and Beaver are now becoming young men, Wally and Beaver show that they will always have a kid somewhere inside of them.
