The Town Boys

Matt Hodges brings in four orphans who have killed his milk cow. Since they don't have $40, they are locked up. Johnny feels he was given a chance by Troop and the boys should have the same chance. He convinces Troop to turn them over to his custody and finds them jobs at the stable working for Mr. Lester. They do their jobs but when a fancy pistol is stolen from the gun shop, they are suspected. Johnny decides to test Dean by giving him $500 for Lester that is really Lily's money stored in the Marshal's office. Pete the oldest is still unswayed by Johnny and wants to rob Lester and leave town. When Johnny confronts him and the stolen pistol, the other boys don't go along and Troop provides a helping hand.

The Go-Between

Three men kidnap Lily and Johnny after the Birdcage closes. Both are blindfolded and hauled to a farmstead where Johnny is tied up and recovering from the blow he suffered. Lily tends to Johnny while they wait. The men left Troop a note to wait 48 hours for orders or Lily will be killed. Troop is forced to wait while wanting to go after them. Johnny is brought to town with a note giving Troop instructions to take Lily's money out of the bank and have the stagecoach drop it off at a flag. Meanwhile, Troop has Johnny recall events he heard, smelled, or felt to decide where to look for Lily reaching her as the man with the money returns.

The Mad Bunch

Joe Knox is riding with Uncle Ben and his family when they encounter Bob Terry on the road going for help for his wife. Duke kills Terry but before he dies Terry asks Joe to help his wife. Joe leaves the group against Uncle Ben's wishes, finds the wife and takes her to the doctor in Laramie. She has a severe fever and thinks Joe is her husband Bob. Troop and the doctor recognize Joe is not Bob but the doctor convinces Troop to let Joe masquerade as Bob to help Dory. They tell Joe who agrees to help but becomes conflicted as Dory relies on him. Uncle Ben's gang come to Laramie and force Joe to take down Troop and Johnny. He complies but when he learns Dory knows the truth, he comes to Troop and Johnny's aid and fights the gang but is severely injured in the fight. It is Dory's turn to help him.

Episode 4

The Old War Horse

Robert Maddox, a teacher, dies in Laramie without a will and leaves an estate of $8,000 to start a college. Jason McQuade, a detective, locates Bess Harper who is the legal wife of Maddox. His plan is for her to claim the Maddox estate and he will take half. Bess is an old saloon singer and dancer who helped Lily when she was young and now drinks to excess. The city is upset over the situation but Bess's claim is valid. Lily decides what Bess wants is recognition so she asks Bess to perform in a fund raiser for the school. Bess agrees and enjoys it so much she decides to donate the estate money to the school as Lily hoped. Troop and Johnny then escort McQuade out of town.

The Return of Owny O'Reilly

Jack Sanders and Ed Wrangel, the latter being a well known felon, fight by a stream resulting in Sanders drowning Wrangel. He floats down river and is caught on a #7 hook and bacon rind by Owny O'Reilly, a young misfit in Laramie. Owny recognizes Wrangel and turns the body in for a reward of $250. Johnny has to take the body to another town to collect the reward and suggests Owny fill in as a special deputy. Owny continues his investigation of who killed Wrangel and determines through various clues it is Sanders who he arrests. However, some of the evidence is destroyed so Troop releases Sanders. As Sanders leaves town, Owny confronts Sanders forcing Troop to stop Sanders from shooting Owny. A search of his saddlebags turns up the stolen money.

Yawkey

Yawkey, a gunslinger, rides into Laramie and takes a seat at a table in the Birdcage. He asks Jake the bartender to sit down and tells him who he is and to tell the Marshal he wants to see him in the street at 3:30 pm. Troop returns to the Birdcage to see why Yawkey wants to kill him but Yawkey says they have nothing to talk about. Johnny and then Lily try to intervene but Troop realizes he must meet Yawkey as requested. When the time comes, Yawkey beats Troop but his gun does not fire - it is empty. Yawkey explains to Troop that he wanted to die as he passes away.

Dilemma

One of three men involved in a Denver robbery is shot so they kidnap Dr. Sam Burbage to operate on him. He succeeds in saving the wounded man but it is clear they intend to kill him so he escapes when his escort lets his guard down. He finds his way to Laramie and takes a job as swamper after shaving his beard, removing his glasses, and adopting a limp. Troop finds him out of place due to his demeanor and tender hands. When a small boy is hit by a runaway wagon, Sam steps in to save the boy as the doctor is out of town. The three outlaws arrive in Laramie searching for the doctor. When the town doctor falls ill, the residents ask Sam to help allowing the outlaws to see through his changed appearance. They trail Sam, Johnny, and Troop to the town doctor where Sam operates while Troop and Johnny fight the outlaws.

The Post

Marshal Troop and Johnny arrest Rafe Curry in the Birdcage. He is wanted in Concordia, New Mexico with a $50 bounty on his head. Rafe swears he will do anything to prevent returning to Concordia and tells Troop he is too dumb to realize he doesn't want to return Rafe to Concordia. Exhausted, Troop falls asleep and Rafe takes his gear 10 miles from Concordia. Troop walks to Concordia and finds there is no jail but a pole in the street with neck restraints. The corrupt sheriff refuses to help Troop. When Rafe is captured, he is chained to the pole. Troop requests his gear back but the sheriff has Troop chained with Rafe. The sheriff wants Rafe to kill Troop while the sheriff and men get drunk. A woman gives them a knife and they dig the pole free and use it to break into the sheriff's office for weapons. With the sheriff on the run the locals help the two men and Troop kills the sheriff.

Chantay

A teenage Indian girl Chantay rides into Laramie but is apprehended by Great Bear a Sioux policeman picking up truants from the Indian school. Johnny saw her eying candy in the general store window so he buys her some for her trip back. It is special three color candy specially made by Mrs. Gaddis in Laramie. The story of him buying candy for Chantay spreads around town and is enhanced when he offers some to Lily - much to Troop's dismay when Lily holds it over him. That night Johnny finds Chantay under his bed and is forced to take her back to the Indian agent himself. On the trip they find Great Bear shot dead and Chantay confesses she did it. Johnny turns her over to the Indian agent who asks Johnny to notify the teacher Grimshaw she is back. At Grimshaw's house Mrs. Grimshaw offers Johnny the same candy that the Sioux policeman took from Chantay. Johnny realizes Chantay confessed to stay away from Grimshaw who killed Great Bear who was to marry Chantay.

Samson the Great

The champ, celebrating his victories at a nearby saloon, then becomes loud and abusive. Marshal Troop orders him out of town and the champ agrees to go, but only if the Marshal agrees to fight him.

The Second Son

Al May steals $40,000 from the Fort Laramie paymaster with troopers on his trail when he arrives at the family homestead shared with his dad Carl and half-brother Charlie. Carl lost his pride when Charlie's mom left with his money and a gambler. Since then, Charlie has felt like an outcast due to mother's actions and Al's resentment. Charlie takes the money and Al's horse to deflect the blame from Al. He admits to the theft although no one and especially Lily thinks he did it. She asks Dan to investigate but Troop says his hands are tied. After coming back from Fort Laramie, Dan tells everyone that the paymaster died raising the charge against Charlie to murder. When Charlie pleads guilty to the murder, Carl decides to tell the truth. However, the paymaster is alive and well and Lily is mad - at Dan!

The Catcher

Frank Fenway is tired of his partner Lank Bailey hitting on his young wife. A hand called Catcher lets people hit him in the stomach to win free drinks makes a bet with Lank. Lank hits him several times before Catcher is set to "catch" the punches. Being a big man he squeezes the breath out of Lank before Troop intervenes and arrests Catcher. Lank doesn't press charges and Frank asks Troop to free Catcher as he can't handle being inside. Troop releases Catcher who along with Lank gets drunk. Frank confronts Lank at the hotel about his wife and hits Lank who breaks his neck in the fall killing him. Lank's friends find him and accuse Catcher. Frank tells Catcher to leave town but joins the posse who wants to kill Catcher. When Catcher asks to be shot, Frank confesses. As a result Catcher whose real name is Molly decides to becomes a teetotaler.

Cornered

Gunfighter Jed Barker distraught over the hanging of his son is drinking in the Birdcage. When he sees Johnny's badge, he challenges Johnny to a gun fight but his gun misfires allowing Johnny to kill him. People are glad he is dead but he has another son who is supposedly even faster. Troop is worried that Johnny is in over his head and offers to step in but Johnny refuses. When the son arrives in Laramie, Johnny goes to confront him but Johnny discovers the son has no desire to follow in his father's footsteps much to the relief of both of them and others.

The Escape of Joe Killmer

Donna Killmer is kidnapped by her brother-in-law's gang. Al Kilmer wants her to turn her severely wounded husband Joe in to the law for medical care and the reward which he wants for supplies. Donna dislikes Al but to save Joe goes along. Troop detects something is wrong and tries to persuade Donna to tell him the truth but Al's threats prevent her from talking. Lily persuades her to go see Joe before the trial which is when Al plans to break Joe free. After the meeting Donna tells Troop the truth and Joe decides to help Troop and McKay fight his brother as they walk Joe to the courthouse.

Old Stefano

Rancher Tracy McNeil wants additional grazing land he not entitled to forcing Marshal Troop to stop him. He has an expensive trotter he decides to sell Lily cheap to entice her to persuade Troop to change his mind but Lily refuses. An old sheep herder brings his dog fatally injured by a bear to Laramie for treatment. In Laramie a dog startles McNeil's trotter causing a runaway accident in which the horse breaks its leg. McNeil forces the vet to leave the sheep dog to tend his horse. Everyone feels the horse should be put down but he stables him. That night the vet hears the herder's sheep bells as the horse is shot. Troop goes after the herder but runs into McNeil who tries to kill Troop and blame it on the herder. He wants a new marshal.

The Robbery

Sam Deever and the Roach brothers plan to rob the army payroll. The brothers unexpectedly kill their informant, an army Sgt. Dooley. After the murder, a brash new Lt. Davidson tells Troop he will not accept the slipshod work of Troop's office in these cases. Troop recognizes Sam as an old friend when they meet in the Birdcage. The Roach brothers persuade Sam to lead Troop into an ambush as they realize he might interfere with their plans. However, Troop recognizes the ploy and calls Sam on it who admits the truth. He decides to help Troop but Lt. Davidson acts on his own with fatal results.

Firehouse Lil

Four strangers are in Laramie to steal $140,000 the stage line is shipping. The cash is stored in the bank just as the Laramie volunteer fire department runs a drill. Due to the confusion during the drill, Marshal Troop suggests Lily be made Fire Chief after she breaks up the fight between the two fire brigades. The men decide a real fire would make a good diversion while they rob the bank. During the bank robbery Troop is knocked out and taken hostage while McKay is able to warn the firemen. Lily takes one engine to the bank where they use the fire hose to stop the robbers when they use Troop as a shield to escape.

The Frame-Up

Troop hung Bib Kindle for murder. His wife Jessica enters the Birdcage proclaiming she was the one who committed the murder. Troop takes her to the Marshal's office to hear her story but is not sure she did it. A ruckus at the Birdcage forces Troop to arrest two men who have a reputation for trouble. Troop sends Johnny to the Kindle place to look for further evidence. Kindle's attorney Les Courtney known to work with outlaws bails out the two men pushing them to kill Troop. When Troop stops by the Birdcage, one of the men tries to distract him but Johnny wounds the shooter. He found a rifle still loaded and rusted. Troop goes to Jessica's hotel room to confront her. Courtney arrives and decides to kill both of them to eliminate Troop. However, Troop is able to shoot Courtney as Courtney shoots Jessica. She confesses that both her and her husband were guilty as she dies.

The Marked Man

Ross Darby hires Tod Larson to kill the Marshal. Tod's sister Muriel works at the Birdcage but she wants nothing to do with him due to his background as a hired gun. In Laramie Tod is given a letter naming the Marshal as his target. Unknown to Tod, his one remaining close friend Dan Troop is the Marshal. Tod tries to back out of the contract but Darby says it is the Marshal or his sister who Darby's men take some shots at. They tell Tod to have Troop on a trail outside town the next morning. Tod knocks out Troop and takes his clothes and horse. Troop and Johnny follow but the men shoot Tod.

The Squatters

With his boss ill with pneumonia, Bent Carr helps him to die by uncovering him and opening a window during cold weather. Unknown to Bent, cowhand Stape saw him do it. The owner allowed homesteaders to squat on boggy bottom land with plans to turn the land over to them. Bent who detests homesteaders has been given power of attorney to handle the ranch until the son returns to take control. Bent has eviction papers served on all the squatters. However, Stape has eyes for Molly Prentice the daughter of a homesteader. When Stape nearly gives away what Bent did to Molly, Bent kills him. Troop suspects Bent and tells him Stape is not dead forcing Bent to try to kill Stape. The son and his wife have died leaving the ranch to a young daughter who agrees to give the land to the homesteaders.

Episode 21

Homecoming

On a hot day Johnny asks Troop if he has every been afraid but it is too hot for Dan to answer. Troop receives a telegram that Frank Walker, who swore to kill Troop, has escaped from prison. Troop rides out to the Walker place to tell his wife that Frank has escaped and to turn himself in when he arrives. Frank's son Eddy is full of hatred for Troop and threatens Dan with a pistol. During the confrontation Troop gun hand is accidental shot. Troop returns to Laramie and bandages his right hand but cannot use it. He tells Lily this is one time he is scared. A man reports seeing Frank, so Troop and Johnny go to the Walker home. However, Frank is terminally ill with 3 months left and has come to die at home. He is forced to stop his son who still wants revenge. Troop and Johnny decide to fake Frank's death to allow him to die at home.

Hassayampa

Hassayampa Edwards arrives in Laramie pushing the virtues of temperance and the desire to close the Birdcage. When he is arrested for destroying Birdcage property and fined, the women of Laramie pay the fine. He tells Lily he works for John Smith of the Saints of Temperance and he has closed several evil saloons. Business at the Birdcage dies due to the ruckus. Two men offer to buy the Birdcage and destroy the furnishings in a skirmish with two bouncers hired by Jake. Lily researches John Smith and learns he bought the closed saloons and reopened them. Lily confronts Edwards with the information in front of the Laramie women. John Smith turns out to be one of the men who wanted to buy Lily out. They and the bouncers who work for them are arrested. At a tea party thrown by Lily for the women, she discovers Edwards drinks.

The Promoter

Malcolm Tyler DeVries along with his henchman Adolph Hagan who is fast and accurate with a gun arrive in Laramie. He informs the four saloon owners in Laramie he wants to buy their saloons with the option for them to stay on as managers to provide a retail outlet for his company's liquor. They all have two days to accept his offer or he will open a competitive saloon and drive them out of business. David Ferris and Lily don't want to sell but the other two do. DeVries has Hagan engage Ferris in a duel which Ferris loses. Troop buys half interest in the Birdcage forcing DeVries to have Hagan attempt to burn the Birdcage but Troop catches him in the act.

Detweiler's Kid

Jim Austin drives a few cattle past the Detweiler homestead and some wander onto the Detweiler property while he is talking to Detweiler's tomboy daughter Elfreida. Old man Detweiler feels no one respects him because of injured leg and poor speech so he attacks Jim. He grouses that if Elfreida was a man, she would stand up for him. He presses trespassing charges against Jim who is fined $10 making Old man Detweiler madder. Elfreida decides to challenge Jim to a duel the next day while firing at him. Johnny intervenes but is promptly challenged himself. The next day Troop tries to reason with the old man who pulls a shotgun on him. Elfreida waits for Johnny but Jim confronts her without a gun telling her she is beautiful, grabs her and kisses her. When JOhnny refuses to draw his gun she shoots his hat off but Jim intervenes while Troop brings the old man in under arrest. Elfreida gets her first dress and the old man is released to his future son-in-law, Jim.

The Inheritance

Everyone in Laramie knows Tecumsah Pruitt as a man who has made a lot of money on investments but who won't spend one dime on himself or his family. His son Owlie wants a new pair of boots to attend a dance but Tecumsah refuses to buy them. He keeps his private books in Lily's safe at the Birdcage. While there, he shoots at someone through the window but misses. When he doesn't return the next morning as expected, Lily asks Dan to check on him. Dan and Johnny find his farm to be run down with Tecumsah locked in the cellar by Owlie. Owlie forces them to join his dad and his mom to bring Lily and his dad's box of money. Lily brings the box and when Owlie opens it he finds only five dollars. Tecumsah is broke as he never had any money to invest but he gave others good advice over the years.

Blue Boss and Willie Shay

Johnny meets Willie Shay washing his pet steer Blue Boss in the river outside Laramie. Willie has trained Blue Boss to lead cattle herds while Willie sings to the herd to keep them calm. Trail bosses hire them to make trail drives easier. In Laramie Willie buys a sarsaparilla for himself and Blue Boss. Al Janaker makes fun of them and decides to try riding Blue Boss who bucks him off. For revenge Al shoots and kills Blue Boss. Willie declares his intent to kill Al who is fined $100 in damages. Al decides to go after Willie but Willie is faster killing Al who wounds Willie. Willie is cleared of charges and presented with a new calf Blue Boss 2.

The Man from New York

Detective Lt. Foster of the New York Police Department arrives in Laramie. He tells Troop he is there to arrest a man for larceny who has been mailing payments from towns around Laramie to repay the theft. The man committed the larceny for a gallbladder operation for his wife. After learning his mission, people in Laramie give him the cold shoulder as they do not agree with the eastern concept of law. They feel a person deserves a second chance to make good. Foster eventually learns the man he is after goes by the name of Fred Stiles who Dan also suspects. When Foster is close to proving his case, Stiles leaves town. Foster trails him but is injured in a buggy accident. Stiles leads Troop to Foster but Foster still forces Troop to go after Stiles and arrest him. Just before Foster is to leave with Stiles on the stage, Foster has a change of heart and decides to leave alone.

Mark of Cain

Chad Kennedy returns to Laramie after three years to a chilly reception. He was known to have killed his brother three years ago but was acquitted by the jury. He tells Troop he is returning home to claim what is rightfully his. At the family farm Chad's sister-in-law, Rena, shows her hatred for him as his nearly blind father falls and hits his head on a table killing him. Troop followed Chad and walks in to find Rena holding her father-in-law while saying Chad killed his father. Troop arrests Chad who protests he is innocent. In Laramie Troop questions Rena who says Chad is guilty but finally lets slip she is getting revenge for her husband's death. Troop realizes he must release Chad and tells Rena. Rena arrives at the jail with gun in hand as Chad leaves. Chad returns Rena's fire ending the dispute for both of them.

Fugitive

Wounded Casey Cormack,trying to escape the law and partner Carver, returns to his wife and son telling her to take Joey and meet him later at an old rendezvous. Meg and Joey stop in Laramie at Mrs. Fields general store for supplies. Meg notices Mrs. Fields keen interest in kids and Joey and decides to leave Joey with Mrs. Fields without saying anything. A hurt Joey refuses to talk to prevent his father's capture. Carver recognizes Joey and tells Troop his father is wanted. After learning what Meg did, Casey decides they will return to Laramie to for Joey. While Meg gets Joey, Carver sees Casey and tries to capture/kill him but Joey bites Carver's hand. Mrs. Fields captures Carver but Casey takes Troop hostage. However, Troop convinces Casey to return and stand trial.

The Persecuted

Gunfighter Burley Keller likes to kill people. In the Birdcage Roy celebrates the birth of his new baby. Burley questions whether Roy is the true father while Jake is gone. As Jake returns he witnesses Roy drawing on the faster Burley who kills Roy. Burley leaves town fast and returns to his wife who is tired of her husband's killing and wandering ways. Troop tracks Burley and returns with him for trial where he is acquitted. Burley makes a show of hanging up his gun and settling in Laramie with his wife. He eventually asks Lily to leave town with him but she rejects him. Burley puts on his gun and challenges the Turner brothers who are celebrating in the Birdcage. Troop intervenes and is forced to kill Burley but is wounded.

The Grubstake

Rainbow Jack returns to Laramie after prospecting hitting Johnny, Jake, and Lily for a grubstake to mine a rich strike of easy gold. None of them believe him based on his past history and their lack of belief in gold in the area. In the Birdcage Jack is attracted to the older, lonely saloon hostess Stephanie Collins. Jack's story reminds her of her childhood and prospector father's dreams. She invests her savings for returning to England of $160 in his dream. In return Jack signs over half interest in his Sagitarrius mine and files the deed. Later his nephew and attorney arrive looking for him to undo the half claim sale. Troop goes after Jack who returns to Laramie to confront them plus surprise Stephanie by telling her the Sagitarrius makes $8000 a day and she is wealthy. Jack still dreams of finding a gold strike on his own. His donkey Sagitarrius found the first one.

Whiphand

Bull Nickerson and one of his ranch hands are in the Birdcage. The hand is grousing about no breakfast due to Bull's wife, Cassie, not making any for them. Bull who is a bully blows it off and places his attention on Lily until a second ranch hand arrives and tells Bull his wife has run off with the peddler Jed Pennyman. Marshal Troop attempts to intervene and see if Cassie was abducted by Jed.

The Threat

Herm Villiers is buying out homesteaders and hired Kurt Swan to handle those who are unwilling to sell such as James Chase. Kurt forces James to draw and kills him in self defense. James's brother Edgar arrives after James is killed. When he hears what happened, he tells Kurt he will die. Edgar is a small man who does not wear a gun. He applies mental pressure on Kurt by stalking him and occasionally making threatening statements. The sleepless Kurt complains to Troop who ignores him but warns Edgar to be careful. After trying to kill Edgar in his room but missing him, Kurt returns to his dark room to be confronted by a man he shoots believing it is Edgar. However, the fatal shot is at his boss Herm Villiers waiting to talk to Kurt.

The Trial

Dexter Weston arrives at his uncle and aunt's home with four men. Judge Leonard Whitehall is bringing Dexter's sister Tendis from Kansas to visit. The stagecoach driver reports being followed and the Judge finds a noose in his room. He informs Troop that it was he who sentenced Dexter and Tendis's father to hang. Troop decides to accompany them to her relatives. Upon arrival they find themselves captives of the men who plan a trial for the judge for his treatment of them. During "The Trial", the judge admits to taking the actions he is accused of but argues (with support from Troop and Tendis) that it was his job. He adds he came on the trip explicitly to see Dexter and explain to him what happened. Dexter has a change of heart, giving Troop an opening.

Shag Warner stumbles into Laramie after being horse whipped and blinded by Lem Pastor for showing interest in Lem's daughter Lucy who is of age. Troop takes Shag to the doctor and then goes to see Lem and Lucy. Lucy leaves the ranch during the night and goes to the Birdcage for help. She wants to see Shag. Troop tries to convince Lucy and Shag to leave town but Shag is determined to kill Lem. When Lem arrives in Laramie, Lucy takes Shag's gun to confront her father. Lucy tells him he stole her life to replace her dead mother and she is leaving making Lem accept the truth.

The Break-In

Gard Washington/Walt Hudson is waiting for Marshal Troop to turn himself in. He wants the reward on his head to use a stake after prison. Lily knows him from years ago when he saved her from a burning building. Troop is suspicious of the whole situation and hires drunk Cactus Gates to fill in as deputy. Gates notices a gunman in town and learns he is asking what cell Hudson is in. The company offering the reward refuses to pay but asks Hudson to turn in his criminal friends for a share of the reward but Hudson refuses. while fighting with the executive, Hudson is moved to the other cell. Hudson uses a derringer he smuggled in to kill the gunman when he shoots through the window at Troop who is sleeping in Hudson's old cell. Troop tells the wounded Hudson he will have a job in Laramie when he leaves prison.

Conditional Surrender

Jed 'Pa' Beason, his two sons, and his daughter Iona burst into the Laramie Hotel. Jed is on a stretcher and he wants a room and the Marshal. The men are wanted for many raids. Jed is dying from "the fever", and he asks Troop for favors in return for his full confession. He wants to be buried in town, he wants Iona sent to live "back east", he wants to see her in women's clothes, and he wants his sons released. Troop refuses to let his sons go, but he will give them time to see to Jed as he dies. Lily dresses and styles Iona, who catches Johnny's eye. Iona returns to show her father, and Jed provides Troop with his written confession. Jed dies as he explains the arrangement to his sons. Jed is buried in town as he wished, but the boys try to escape the Marshal and Johnny. Iona tries to stop them, resulting in both being wounded. Iona heads east with Johnny's heart in tow.

Btad and Ann Turner move to Laramie to open a new business. As it is about to open the Quade brothers arrive looking for Brad who killed their younger brother in a gun fight while he was Marshal in Tucson. The shootout took place after Brad married Ann and he found his gun hand no longer worked as expected but he was saved by young Quade's poor shot. Because of his reluctant gun hand, he refuses to face the Quade brothers. Both Ann and Brad ask Marshal Troop for his protection but Troop is limited in what he can do. The brothers decide to kidnap Ann and force Brad to meet them in a nearby deserted town. Brad's hand works as he takes out one brother and Troop shoots the other one as he tries to bushwhack Brad.

The Promise

Johnny is at Fort Laramie where Jed Barrister is hanged by the Army for several crimes. In his last statement Jed wills his share of the loot collected to one man to shoot Troop in the back or by facing him. Johnny returns to Laramie to inform Troop who takes the news calmly but Johnny is on edge. He confronts every stranger he meets and is particularly aggressive with an uncooperative man until Troop intervenes. As Johnny faces his suspect for the second time, a gunshot from the Birdcage proves Johnny has the wrong man. Troop is saved by the back of a chair. Johnny' suspect was eloping and thought Johnny was trying to intervene on behalf of the bride's father.
