Lily Merrill opens the new Birdcage saloon in Larmie. She was driven out of Billings, Montana after an incident where an employee robbed a patron. When she happily learns Marshal Troop does not want a payoff, she also finds he wants no trouble and her reputation has preceded her. She decides to rehire Len Farrell to deal poker when she learns he and Annette are trying to get married. When Barney Tate mistakenly thinks he has been robbed, Troop gets heat from Lily for thinking her people were involved. However, Len reverts to original form and decides to rob a gambler but has to stab him to escape.

Lily cuts off Frank Judson at the Birdcage for being drunk. The next morning Hal Mead tells Troop that Judson knocked him out and stole $10,000. Troop starts his investigation by visiting Judson who is waking up from the previous night's drunk. With Troop watching him, he goes for a bottle of whiskey and finds a money bag from the heist. Troop is forced to arrest Judson who has no recollection of what happened but Troop believes the evidence is too good and suspects a frame-up. His son tries to get a job with Lily to help pay for an attorney. A gambler Jack Foley in the Birdcage raises a ruckus and suspicions when he wants credit to gamble and states he has more money in the Overland office. He actually helped Hal Mead to pull an inside job and blame Judson. Troop and Johnny tail Foley to the stable where they find him dead after Mead leaves the stable.

Bench Ryan is being sent from Laramie to prison and Johnny McKay is riding with him in the prison wagon. Ryan's partner Ben Lang attempts to free Ryan by shooting the driver but Johnny shoots Lang. The prison wagon crashes with Johnny in the back with Ryan. Ryan steals Johnny's gun but Johnny shackles Ryan to Johnny and tosses the key. They find Lang mortally wounded but he tells Ryan his wife Maggie is planning to run off with their other partner Frank Krohl. Ryan marches Johnny to their hideout while Johnny keeps reminding Ryan what Lang said. Maggie is surprised to see Ryan and when told to find a hacksaw to free him from Johnny, she hides it instead. When Krohl arrives, she tries to persuade him to kill Ryan. Ryan becomes suspicious and when they search the tool shed themselves, Ryan finds the hidden hacksaw. This leads to him confronting Maggie and Krohl which gives Johnny the edge he needed.

Lily refuses but Frank has an ace up his sleeve...their son, Tommy. He has Tommy with him and if Lily doesn't help him she'll never see him again. Lily is forced to comply. Dan suspects something is wrong with her but Lily will not confide in him for fear of losing Tommy.

Chief Torn Cloud has come to Laramie to meet with Gen. Iron Jack Mider to end the fighting and move to a reservation. However, many on the whites feel the Indians are no better than animals. Joshua Haney who has lived his life with the Sioux is against the proposed treaty and is spurred to act when he hears the comments by the men in the Birdcage. His wife and kids were killed by soldiers in the Indian wars. Troop arrests him to keep the peace but he uses his rawhide shirt and water to escape jail. He steals some dynamite and tries to kill the general but Troops warns everyone. When Haney tries to dynamite the meeting, Chief Torn Cloud is forced to stop him with a lance. The general then realizes that the Indians have saved his life, are not as bad as he thought, and truly want peace.

While Troop is gone, Johnny tries to arrest a local man, Bill Watts, accused of Stealing $36 and two junkie watches. When the man refuses to give up, Johnny is forced to kill him. Bill's younger brother Jessie, who Johnny grew up with, picks up Bill's gun and forces Johnny to shoot and kill him as well. The stress from it causes Johnny to quit. Troop doesn't want to force Johnny to stay so he hires Harry Jensen but Jensen's rough personality irritates Johnny. When Jensen uses excess force in the Birdcage on two cowhands from a cattle drive, the victims return with several co-workers to teach Jensen a lesson. When Jensen folds under the pressure and Troop is outnumbered, Johnny stops them with the stage driver's shotgun. The stage leaves and Johnny decides to pin the badge back on after picking it up from the ground where Jensen threw it.

Beth Harvey is murdered and the only witness is the bartender, Oren, who is blind without his glasses which were broken. Troop decides to keep it secret that Oren did not really get a look at the killer. After some investigating Marshal Troop believes the killer is Clint Baker who admits knowing Beth and writing to her. However, Troop has no hard proof and decides to resort to trickery to smoke out the killer. He enlists the drunk conman Specs Toynby to state he has provided Oren with new glasses allowing him to recognize the killer in a lineup at the Birdcage. With Johnny's help, Oren learns to walk to the Birdcage and from behind the bar appear to spot the killer sitting next to Troop. The escapade forces Baker to show his hand.

Mark McQueen, Timmo's son who was raised by the boy's grandparents, is coming to visit. Unknown to Timmo, Mark had a hard life growing up and resents his father for having seemingly abandoned him. Mark takes it in stride when he is told Timmo is not a rancher (as Timmo had written him) but just a bartender. Troop recognizes that Mark has a big chip on his shoulder. Mark is carrying padlocked saddle bags adding to Troop's suspicions. That night, after drinking, Mark starts trouble at the Birdcage and Johnny quickly brings him down to earth in a street fight. At the end, two men arrive Mark knows. He decides to ask Troop to hold the saddle bags which he says contain ore samples. Later, the two men take Mark and Timmo hostage and force Troop to hand over the bags. Mark and Timmo force a scuffle allowing Troop and Johnny to take the men. Mark explains the bags contain money which a dead friend and the two men had stolen from a bank.

Lal Hoard sent to prison by Troop arrives in Laramie after his release. Hoard had threaten revenge against Troop but instead tells everyone prison has changed him and he has a new career as a newspaper owner. When his first edition of the paper arrives, it becomes clear his target is the humiliation and removal of Marshal Troop. Troop presses the town council for unanimous support or he will resign. Hoard has used his connections in prison to learn details about the history of Laramie's respected citizens including the banker Oren Slauson's arrest for embezzlement 25 years ago and Lily being run out of Billings, Montona due to a crooked dealer and sheriff. Slauson votes against Troop forcing Johnny to take the Marshal's job and freeing Troop to go after Hoard without the weight of the law.

Pa Jutes and two sons take over the Laramie Marshal's office while Troop and McKay are eating dinner. Pa Jutes asks the paper boy to bring Lily to the office where Jutes holds both as hostages. Jutes demands that Troop take his third son Lester off the 9:05 train. He is on his way to be hanged. Pa Jutes clears the street shooting the paperboy's father in doing so to show he means business. Troop verifies that Lester is on the train and when it arrives takes his clothes and has Johnny take his place. The fake Lester draws Pa Jutes out of the office into the street where Johnny shoots him. Troop kills the two sons inside the office with the aid of Lily and Johnny's spur.

Two grifters hear the church in Laramie has burned down and decide raising money for a new church would be a good mark. They arrive posing as ministers to help and are quickly welcomed by Laura Tate. Marshal Troop finds the two men to be suspicious but checks on their backgrounds reveal no issues. During a fund raising event in the Birdcage, Lily's new employee Paula recognizes one of the men which Troop notices. The men tell Paula they will cut her in but intend to leave town without her. When Paula tells Lily she is not going to the fund raising dance that night, Lily becomes suspicious and Troop overhears it. They convince Paula to tell the truth and go after the grifters.

Troop and McKay capture the outlaw Ben Moray and seek shelter at a cabin they encounter during a massive rain storm. Jack Brace and his female Indian captive Tucupita live there. Brace forces Tucupita to do all the work including handling the men's horses. Troop and Johnny try to help her but Brace forces them to stop. While serving them a meal, Tucupita tells Troop in her native tongue "many men come here but none leave alive". During the meal Moray accuses Brace of being an escaped convict "Sydney duck" from Australia. Brace takes all three men captive but Moray buys his way out. When Brace gives Moray an unloaded gun to kill Troop and Johnny after they dug their own graves, Troop seizes the chance to take his captors. Tucupita helps by shooting Brace.

Bill Jennings is planning to marry Amie who works at The Birdcage. However, his 18 year old son Gabe who Bill has never seen arrives. Lily is suspicious of Gabe's actions and alerts Troop who arrests Gabe after he learns Gabe plans to kill his father. Gabe believes Bill deserted him and his mother in St. Louis. His mother has died and Gabe believes Bill is at fault. Bill refuses to press charges and tells Troop after making him promise not to tell Gabe that in fact his wife left him while pregnant with another man and went to St. Louis. Troop escorts Gabe out of Laramie but Gabe returns to kill Bill after his wedding. Troop is forced to shoot the rifle out of Gabe's hands and tells him he will find that Bill was always in Laramie and never abandoned Gabe and his mother in St. Louis forcing Gabe to confront the truth.

Blake Carr, a gunfighter, who was trained by Lance Creedy arrives in Laramie looking to claim Lance's wife, Mattie, by killing Lance. Carr tells Troop his plans while trying to locate Lance. Troop tries to dissuade Carr but when that fails Troop visits Lance and Mattie. Lance has hung up his guns under a pardon he received and is living a peaceful life. Lance promises to avoid Laramie for awhile but Mattie comes to Laramie on her own to try to stop Carr. Lance arrives ready to face Carr but Mattie's comments cause him to drop his gun belt. When Carr continues to force the issue and is about to kill Lance in cold blood, Troop is forced to act.

Egged on by Chuck Slade, Jack Edwards becomes a dangerous drunk in the Birdcage. After beating a man he wounds Timmo and tries to force Lily to dance with him. Marshal Troop hearing the gunfire enters the Birdcage and tries to talk Edwards into giving up his gun. However, with Slade's urging Edwards draws on Troop forcing Troop to kill him. Later Troop begins to receive a series of letters telling him he is to be killed within a week but no reason is given. When they learn Slade has returned to Laramie, they think it is him but it proves not to be. Johnny is worried about Troop and it occurs to him that an older man, Jason Smith, made comments about a son. Troop and Johnny go to investigate Smith but Smith gets the drop on Troop with a shotgun. Johnny intervenes as Smith describes his son Jack as a good boy but Johnny tries to persuade him that was not the truth at the end.

The Cattlemen's Association has been trying to catch the wolf, Old Club, which has been causing $10,000 a year in damages. They call in the renowned wolfer Pike Reese who catches and brings back a live wolf he claims is Old Club. The bounty offered is $50 but he wants $5000. When Alf Betts shoots the wolf, Pike kills Betts and Troop is forced to go after him. Reese sets traps that ensnare first Troop's horse and then Troop himself. When Troop catches up with Reese, Reese takes him prisoner but Old Club attacks Reese. Troop is forced to shoot Old Club and Reese's dying words leave an impression on Troop.

Nat Denning has let his farm run down and his 22 year old daughter Beth run wild. She wants a husband but feels everyone looks down on her. When she rescues a heifer that has come up lame, the son of the trail boss, Roy Grant, gives it to her for a drink and dance at the Birdcage later. While in town Beth is talked into taking a pair of $20 shoes she wants by the clerk Gilly who wants her. He tells her she can pay him $1 per week for them. At the Birdcage she goes wild after two drinks as she is not used to alcohol forcing Lily and Troop to send her home before she causes more trouble. On the way home Gilly stops her and after trying to kiss her she runs away and falls hitting her head. Her dad finds her and brings into town thinking she is dead but she is not. Since she initially can't wake up or speak, Troop arrests Roy Grant. When his dad tries to break him out of jail, Gilly leads the rest of the town against him. Lily is finally able to awaken Beth and learn the truth stopping the potential riot.

The talented painter Frederick Jameson and his companion Tall Horse arrive in Laramie on a quest to paint the west for posterity. Jameson in his beret proves equal to the task of taking care of himself when local ruffians provoke him. Lily after meeting him finds the story of his life interesting. Jameson shows Troop and Lily a series of paintings he has done. Lily wants to buy one but Jameson will only give her one but she refuses to take one for free. Troop recognizes a gang leader in one painting. Later in the early morning Jameson brings Lily a covered painting to keep until he returns later. Troop and Tall Horse force Jameson to stay in Laramie as he tries to leave to prevent trouble in Laramie. Troop had received notification the gang is heading toward Laramie after escaping from prison and upon further investigation learns Jameson help send them to prison by painting the picture Troop noticed. Troop, McKay, and Tall Horse attempt to protect Jameson when the gang invades Laramie looking for him but Jameson is killed. When Lily uncovers the painting Jameson left her, she finds it is of herself. It is mounted behind the bar and is prominently displayed for the rest of the series.

Lily is confronted in the dark by a man who calls himself "The Ugly Man". He knows private facts about her life and tells her he will kill her at midnight on a future night because she spurned him. She has no clue who he is resulting in Troop and Johnny becoming her full time bodyguards. When she describes what the man said to the other women at the Birdcage, Josie realizes it is a man she wrote to using Lily's name and life events but she broke off the relationship. She is afraid to tell Lily but when she goes to Lily's room to tell Lily, she is shot by "The Ugly Man" who thought she was Lily. Although wounded, she is able to tell Lily and Troop the truth. Troop decides to use Lily as a decoy to catch the man.

Three young children, two boys and a girl, appear in Laramie alone. After taking a shot at Marshal Troop, Troop and Johnny chase and capture them. Lily takes charge of the girl. Troop learns that their dad is a wanted outlaw, their mother is dead, and their uncle, a Quaker, is coming for them. When their father arrives to take the kids, Troop has his hands full and the uncle has to step in.

A thimblerigger arrives in Laramie saying he is out to destroy a man. He states the man is a coward who deserted his bride and lied about it. The thimblerigger plans to expose the man and challenges every man to pick a shell. A pea under the shell indicates the party he wants to expose. Pressure develops in the community for every man to play but one man is reluctant and Troop attempts to protect him.

O. C. Coulsen rides into Laramie and walks into Troop's office wounded. He has been wanted for years and Sheriff Jess Hahn with posse is on his trail. Unknown to the Sheriff, Coulsen has made a deal through Troop to talk to the Governor for a deal. Troop hides Coulson at the Birdcage where Lily tends to his wound. Troop wears Coulsen's clothes and rides out of town to distract the Sheriff leading him out of town. Meanwhile, Lily and Johnny take Coulsen to the Governor in Cheyenne in Lily's carriage. The Sheriff eventually finds the clothes and realizes he has been tricked. Troop, Johnny, Lily, and Coulsen arrive at the Governor's home at the same time as the Sheriff. Coulsen and the Governor fought each other in the Civil War and Coulsen spared the Governor and his men so he is hoping for similar treatment from the Governor. However, the Governor says by law he must surrender and have a trial first. To calm tensions Troop has the Sheriff make the official arrest.

Vint Fell, a buffalo hunter and union vet, is in Laramie after a hunt. Reed Smith who is an accomplished piano player arrives to play at the Birdcage. He led a patrol in the Civil War, which included Fell's brother, but he was the only man to return and Fell wants revenge. Troop tries to persuade Smith to leave Laramie but he has quit drinking and intends to stay which Lily says he can do as long as he is sober. Fell along with several friends come to tar Smith forcing Troop to stop him. Fell who respects and served with Troop, forces Troop to defend himself when Fell pulls his gun.

It is a lazy day in Laramie with a bored Johnny bothering Marshal Troop with his antics. Johnny decides to go for a cup of coffee at the Birdcage with Troop to follow. Troop opens a poster on the outlaw Jake Wilson wanted for numerous murders just as Wilson himself rides into Laramie and enters the Birdcage. At the Birdcage, Len Eaton stops for a drink while getting supplies and recognizes Wilson. He quietly tells Lily who says to finish his drink and find Troop. Wilson notices the conversation and is suspicious. Wilson questions Eaton so Johnny intervenes. Wilson intends to shoot Eaton as he leaves. Johnny draws and wounds Wilson who shoots Johnny and kills Eaton for having recognized him and having alerted Lily. The shots bring Troop who finds Wilson with hostages and Johnny shot. Wilson orders Troop to clear the street and intends to kill Troop but Johnny recovers enough to distract Wilson with a shot allowing Troop to kill Wilson.

Lloyd Malone is released from prison. Before prison, he lost his right arm in a gun fight with Troop. His son, Jim, is a crack shot with a pistol and Lloyd wants Jim to shoot Troop's right arm for revenge. Lloyd's brother, a local drunk and poet, warns Troop what is happening and tries to persuade Jim not to follow his father's instructions. When Jim finally confronts Troop, Troop decides to use his left hand instead to prove to Jim that his father was a coward and unwilling to fight Troop himself with his remaining hand. Lloyd seeing Jim falter decides to try to take on Troop himself.

Episode 26

Ben Belding is driving a herd of cattle to Laramie with his daughter, Meg. When Tip White, one of the hands, shows interest in Meg, Ben drives him off. Ben's wife left him years ago and since then has kept his daughter on a very tight leash. Meg has had enough and leaves the drive. She goes to The Birdcage where she asks Lily for a job and states she is looking for a husband. She is 22 years old so her father no longer has say in what she does. Tip arrives and their romance resumes. At the same time, the other herd hands who all despise Belding let him know where his daughter is working, causing him to try to take her back. Troop stops him and sends him home with Johnny as an escort but Belding catches Johnny unawares and knocks him out. He returns to town for Meg who has, in the meantime, married Tip with Lily and Troop's assistance.

As the beautiful Jenny Miles steps out of the stagecoach, deputy Johnny McKay is immediately smitten. He escorts her to the milliner shop she is taking over. After helping her clean the shop, she asks Johnny about the Birdcage Saloon. He agrees to take her there to meet Troop and Lily. After they leave, Jeff Hacker, a dealer at the Birdcage, asks to leave early, as he knows Jenny. Later that evening, Johnny confronts Jeff when he finds him arguing with Jenny. After several days of courtship, Johnny asks Jenny to marry him, but Lily and Troop are worried that he doesn't know Jenny well. She tells Johnny the true measure of a man is his willingness to die for her. When their engagement is announced, Jeff challenges Johnny and shoots at him as Jenny comes out of her store upon hearing the ruckus. Jenny is hit and asks for Jeff instead of Johnny as she dies.

Lucas Beyer has lived with the Cheyenne and his Indian wife Mary for years as part of the tribe. When he pushes Mary in a fit of anger she hits her head on a rock and dies. The tribe sentences him to death at the hands of her brother Tonkawa who tracks Beyer to Laramie where he thinks he has escaped. Troop takes both men into custody when Tonkawa tries to shoot Beyer. After hearing their stories, Troop and Johnny take both men back to the Cheyenne camp. The chief Washita and Beyer agrees that if Beyer passes an Indian test he is free but if Beyer fails he goes back to Laramie for trial. Beyer must hold his finger steady in a bowl of water and not disturb the surface of the water while Washita questions him. Beyer fails the test and as he tries to escape Troop fires at him and Beyer falls to the ground dead - without a mark on him. Troop had fired over his head.

Owny O'Reilly is an older boy with no oversight wanting to be a man. When he draws a gun on Timmo to force him to serve him whiskey, Johnny takes the gun away and sends the boy packing but returns the gun. Troop and Johnny are on watch for two men one of which is Owny's brother who held up a stage. They wound one man but Owny's brother escapes. The wounded man is able to ditch the gold into a well as Owny watches. Troop arrests the man but can't hold him due to lack of evidence. Owny recovers the money from the well and hides it. The next day Owny apologizes to Johnny and leading Johnny to convince Lily to give Owny a job. She is resistant but Owny turns out to be a good worker and responds to her kindness. When the two men try to recover the gold, they find it missing causing a rift. They hear Owny and discover he has the money. Owny's brother is killed and the survivor must face Troop and Johnny who have trailed Owny.

Lady Belle Smythe leads a gang of successful bank robbers plaguing the Wyoming Territory. She comes to town pretending to be a recent widow to case the bank and area then leaving before the robberies. She arrives in Laramie and catches the attention of bank President Oren Slauson a widower. When Oren takes her to the Birdcage and introduces her to Lily, she insults Lily's new dress and job. Lily proceeds to take her anger out on Dan. When Lily goes to apologize to Dan, she notices Lady Belle talking to a stranger. The next day the stage is late due to a broken wheel and the hotel clerk has his musket out after duck hunting. When the robbery happens, Troop is wounded after killing one bandit but the stage coach driver and hotel clerk are able to take out the others in a ragtag operation. Lily recognizes one of the dead bandits as the man Lady Belle was conversing with and takes it upon herself to arrest Lady Belle.

Gunfighter Ron Fallon is challenged by a man and his two companions while in the Birdcage. Due to his reputation and intervention by Troop they back down. Troop notices that Fallon's gun hand is severely injured. Fallon asks Troop to do him a favor. He asks Troop to accompany him while he visits Judith Manning to give her $6,000 saying it is her husband's share of a business. Her son David seeing Fallon refuses the money and says he will kill Fallon for killing his dad. Troop intervenes and takes David's gun. Fallon and Troop return to Laramie where one of the three men learns Fallon's hand is injured and tells the others as David arrives asking to buy a gun from them. They give him the gun and he challenges Fallon to a duel but Fallon refuses leading to a gunfight involving all six men. Fallon and Troop take out the three men but David goes to Fallon's room to challenge him directly. David takes a shot at Fallon and Fallon tells him he missed but he didn't.

A well known and successful robber The Actor kills two people during a robbery in Laramie. He is chased by Troop, Johnny, and a third man. Johnny is sent back to Laramie with the third man who is injured. Troop continues on but is bushwhacked by The Actor who steals his gun and badge. A woman Lilac finds the wounded Troop and brings him back to the farm where she lives with her sister Rose and Rose's husband, a judge. Lilac hides Troop in the barn but her sister finds them and has Troop come into the house. The judge arrives and starts a battle of wits with Troop telling Troop he feels all criminals are stupid. Lilac asks Troop to take her with him when he leaves. Troop comes to realize the judge is really The Actor and sets warning traps around the barn where he is staying. When the judge comes after Troop, Troop is able to take him prisoner but Rose confronts the judge telling him she knew who he really was and accidentally shoots him during an argument.

Guiseppe 'Joseph' Soldano and his wife arrive in Laramie and are hired by Lily to put on their high wire act to draw customers. During the first show someone shoots off the end of the balancing pole causing Joseph to lose his balance and sprain his wrist. Troop tries to investigate the shooting but Joseph and his wife refuse to admit they have any enemies. They decide to leave Larmie and go further west but when Laura finds a warning from the "Black Hand" she decides it is time to stay and fight. Joseph is against it. He explains to Troop that the "Black Hand" is from his old country in Europe and expects payments which he has refused. As they stage their act a second time, Troop spots a rifle at the stable and fires stopping the attack.

Tom Bishop an escaped convict sent to prison by Troop surprises Troop in the Marshal's office wanting to make a deal. Bishop will turn himself in if the $500 reward for him is given to his girlfriend Jennie who needs to go to Chicago for medical attention. Troop conditionally agrees to the deal if he can verify the story. Troop decides the story is true and wires for the reward money. Another convict Blue sees Jennie and recognizes her as an old flame from her saloon days. He forces Jennie to give him the money for not telling her boyfriend. Jennie is then forced to pawn her new brooch for stagecoach fare. When the man she sold it to tries to sell it to Lily, Troop recognizes it and confronts Jennie who tells him her condition is terminal but she doesn't want to tell Tom. Troop confronts Blue who is now after Tom and is forced to kill him but recovers the money for Jennie.

While Johnny is resting by a stream he meets Ellie Phelan who is the daughter of Jim Phelan a swamper and drunk but a college graduate. Her cousin Chad Walters and Greg Thatcher arrive to persuade Jim to help them rob the express office by knocking on the door to get the clerk to open the door. They pay Jim $300 for his part. He tells Ellie is going to use the money to send her back east for the education he has always promised. After Johnny tells Troop about Ellie, Troop warns Jim not to do anything illegal. Jim tries to return the money but Chad and Greg tell him there is no turning back. Troop spots the robbery attempt and is forced to shoot Chad who accidentally kills Jim while Troop captures Greg. They hide Jim's involvement from Ellie and allow her to go east as Jim had planned.

Episode 36

Ben Jaegers robbed a stage taking $200 to provide medical care for his sick wife. A new rogue deputy, Clyde Wilson, who has a no holds barred attitude shoots and kills the wife of Ben when Ben attempts to surrender. Ben wounds Wilson in the leg and runs off to the high hills to hole up. Troop is a close friend of Ben and after hearing what has happened leaves to help Ben. Troop confronts Wilson who has taken control from the older sheriff who has ceded control. Troop tries to talk Ben down with no success. After hearing Wilson and his followers decide they are going to torture Ben if they catch him alive, Troop leaves and sneaks back up the hills to capture Ben by knocking him out. The careless Wilson kills one of his own men before they learn Troop has taken Ben. The posse chases Troop but can't catch him until they are in Troop's jurisdiction. The Sheriff finally finds his strength to retake control from his rogue deputy and Troop is forced to kill Deputy Wilson.

Episode 37

Ritt Ketchum comes to in the alley and awakens Lily and Timmo who see he has been shot. When Troop arrives, Ritt gives a deathbed confession that Frank Saunders did not murder a woman he is to hang for at noon but dies before he can say who killed her. Troop sends Johnny to tell Frank's wife and wakes up the telegrapher to send a message to Cheyenne. However, the wires are cut before a message can be sent so he sends Johnny by horseback. After repairing the wires they learn they have been cut a second time and Johnny returns shot in the shoulder. Troop and Saunder's wife Amy leave together on horseback for Cheyenne. At a relay station they are ambushed and learn the horses there have been run off. Troop soon realizes the shooter is firing at him but not Amy. He forces the shooter into the open and kills him with Amy mourning over him.
