The new Laramie marshal arrives as Johnny McKay is installing the headstone for the previous marshal. Dan Troop is from Abilene where he cleaned up the town. His first two tasks are hiring a deputy and finding out who killed the previous marshal. Johnny McKay, who works part time for the previous marshal's wife in her café, applies for the deputy job but Troop believes him to be too green. However, Johnny tells Troop that Flynn Hawks killed Marshal Lemp and that half the town saw it. Troop locks up the younger Lacy Hawks while looking for Flynn putting the town on edge. During a discussion with Mrs. Lemp on why he does such a thankless job he indicates a woman very close to him was killed by a random bullet. The older Hawks brothers Walt and Flynn draw Troop into a shootout of two versus one he can't win. However, McKay comes to Troop's aid and the deputy job is filled.

Dick Sellers likes to push young boys and old men into gunfights for his friends and his entertainment. Marshal Troop arrests him for killing a man and tries to follow the law. However, the town fathers are afraid of his friends. When they ask Troop to back down, he decides to use a different tactic. He releases Sellers and waits for him to attack someone again. Troop then challenges Sellers in front of Sellers' friends leaving Sellers little choice.

Barney Tremain arrives in Laramie after killing his most recent outlaw partner. When he learns Johnny's name, he tells Johnny he is his father resulting in Johnny's decision to quit his job. Marshal Troop senses he knows Tremain and with help from the newspaper editor realizes he was part of an outlaw band during the Civil War. Tremain is forced by Troop to tell Johnny the truth.

Marshal Troop and Johnny transport two convicted murderers to the territorial prison where one is to be hanged and the other, a doctor, has a long sentence. Along the route they encounter a stage coach which lost a wheel. A pregnant woman is injured and close to giving birth while the driver's arm was injured. Troop has the doctor he is transporting look at the injured and he says the woman cannot be moved. Troop sends Johnny for help along with the injured driver and one female passenger. Another female passenger stays behind to help the pregnant woman and another male passenger helps repair the stagecoach. When the prisoner sentenced to hang steals a shotgun, the doctor stands by his principals and knocks him out.

Bob Ford arrives in Laramie and is recognized by patrons of the saloon led by Ed Kelly. He is reviled for having shot Jesse James in the back for reward money. When he tries to buy a drink, they start to beat him him up as he is not wearing a gun. Marshal Troop intervenes and tells Ford to stay in his hotel room until the train leaves town. However, the train is delayed and Ford becomes drunk. Troop moves him to the jail but Kelly leads the mob to the jail to lynch Ford forcing Troop to take a stand.

Kate Wilson is once again found not guilty by a jury. Kate, her partner Carter Knox, and her saloon are the biggest problems in Laramie with which Marshal Troop must contend. The newspaper editor shows Troop articles describing the times she has been freed by juries for multiple crimes. In one case her previous partner took the blame for a murder and is serving five years for manslaughter. Troop visits Larry Bennett in prison and when confronted with the fact Kate has moved past him, Bennett agrees to testify against Kate. At the trial Kate's attorney once again seats a jury of men aged 40-50 as requested by Kate. However, the prosecutor and Judge at the urging of Marshal Troop decide to seat a new jury.

Bounty hunter Fallon brings the body of a wanted man he killed in cold blood to Laramie to claim the reward. When Troop learns Fallon plans to stay in Laramie for a few days, he assumes Fallon is after someone in Laramie. Troop warns Fallon against trying to withhold information from the law on anyone wanted and that Fallon's bounty hunting days in Laramie are over. Fallon shows Troop a poster he has never seen on a man wanted for robbery. However, Johnny recognizes the man as someone with whom he is close friends. Troop sends Johnny to bring him in for questioning but the man's son knocks Johnny out with a whip handle. The father decides they must tend to Johnny rather than run. While taking Johnny to the doctor, Fallon sees them and takes Red prisoner forcing Troop to intervene.

Johnny's friend Bill Andrews comes from a family with a bad reputation. His father was hung, two other brothers are in prison for life and his third brother was recently released from prison. Bill takes a $350 deposit for Mr. Seymour to the bank but $50 falls on the floor in the store unnoticed. When Bill tries to make the deposit, the fifty dollars is missing and Bucknell accuses Bill of stealing it. When Bucknell tries to search Bill, Bill strikes Bucknell and the bank manager, Mr. Watson, has Bill charged with attempted murder. No one will pay Bill's bail until his brother returns to pay it. He tells Bill his sick mother died because the bank refused their father a loan. Bill goes along with his brother Rick's plan to rob the bank but Johnny intercedes during the robbery.

Matt and Luke Saint arrive in Laramie. Matt is a fast gun but not wanted. He has been shot in the right arm, lost a lot of blood, and will no longer be able to be a gunman. His father Luke has driven him to be a fast gun since he was ten years old resulting in Matt abandoning his wife and son Mark. Mark, too, is a fast gun and is on Matt's trail wanting revenge for being abandoned. Luke, although not a gunman, takes delight in his son and grandson reputations and forces them into confrontations. Matt sees what Luke has done to him and his son and asks Troop to help. Troop tries but Luke brings Mark to confront Matt forcing Matt to resolve the issue.

A Chinese man from the local mining camp stumbles into Laramie dying from a beating. He is grasping a concho from a saddle. Troop goes to the mining encampment but none of the Chinese will say anything except for the wife, May Ling, of the slain man. She returns to Laramie to help identify the men. When Troop notices a saddle missing a similar piece to the one found, he takes in two men for questioning who ask the local attorney to help them. May Ling identifies the men as the guilty parties. The attorney then whips up the town against the girl by buying drinks at the saloon resulting in her being attacked while staying at Dru Lemp's place. Troop puts down the problem created by the lawyer. When the other Chinese hear what happened, they come to Troop and tell him the lawyer is behind the extortion scheme.

Marshal Troop is approached by an attorney representing 27 businessmen in Laramie willing to make him wealthy if he agrees to a few new tasks which includes lifting the 10:00 pm curfew. When he refuses the offer, three of the ringleaders decide to kill Troop. They draw for the short straw to decide who kills him. The man drawing the short straw has reservations about their plan and asks if one of the others want the task but he is forced to do the job. He starts by bringing in a hired gun. Troop knows him and foils the gunman's plan. A drunk released early from the jail is mistakenly shot when he is taken for Troop. Troop and McKay are on edge as they await the next attack which does come.

Julie Preston returns to Laramie to settle her father's estate. She was the childhood sweetheart of Johnny McKay who is hoping to rekindle their previous relationship. However, Julie has been away from Laramie for several years and has changed. Hal Daniels follows her to Laramie and instantly lets everyone know that he has an interest in Julie. It is revealed that Julie wants to marry him but he refuses using the excuse he is not financially stable and she is realizing he will never marry her. Hal meets Johnny near an alley and warns him to stay away from Julie. Their argument is noticed by two men walking by. The argument elevates into a fight and Hal pulls a derringer on Johnny. Johnny draws his gun is forced to kill Hal. When Johnny goes for help, a little boy who has been pestering Johnny and Julie runs in and takes Hal's derringer. Julie watches the whole scene from a window above. Marshal Troop is forced to arrest Johnny and he is put on trial for murder as Hal's gun is not found. Dru Lemp feels Julie knows more than she is telling but Julie is staying silent.

Cattlemen are trying to push homesteaders off their property by cutting fences and running cattle through the homesteader's crops. When the tactics fail, they hire Tod Horgan. Horgan is an ex-lawman and trained Dan Troop. Troop is glad to see Horgan but when he learns why Horgan is there he warns him about following the law. Horgan looks for proof of the homesteaders breaking the law but when he finds none, the cattlemen manufacture proof by hiding dead steers on the homesteads. When one of the homesteaders confronts Horgan, Horgan is forced to kill him. Troop is called and tells Horgan he has proof the homesteaders are innocent leading to a show down between them when Horgan refuses to be arrested.

Josh Teller hates Indians because they killed his brother and is spreading his hatred in Laramie. A white neighbor passed away leaving his ranch to his half Indian daughter and her Indian mother. Teller runs off every hand Rene Lebeau hires and forces the local general store to deny her credit. Teller's son Herbie finds Rene attractive and Josh hired Stan Bates to help enforce his plans. When Troop goes to the LeBeau ranch to help Rene and protect her, he finds Herbie assaulting Rene. After Teller's final strategy of bribing Troop fails, Bates decides to leave. Josh Teller shoots Bates allowing Josh and Herbie to claim Troop killed Bates and remove Troop from office. However, when Teller and the town confront Troop they are surprised.

The Marshal and Johnny receive word that Jack McCall has shot Wild Bill Hickock in the back and is on the loose. Johnny checks on his friend Jess Mitchell who has a leg injury. Although Jess refuses to have the doctor treat him, Johnny decides to take the doctor to Jess anyway. While picking up the doctor, Johnny learns that the little Mitchell girl is going to need an operation the next day. When Johnny returns to Jess's cabin with the doctor, they find him held hostage by Jack McCall. McCall forces Johnny to return to Laramie to pick up a horse and week's worth of food for him. Johnny returns to Laramie but upon hearing the girl is worse decides he must follow orders and not tell Marshal Troop about McCall. However, Troop wonders what is happening when he learns Johnny is buying a second horse and follows Johnny to Jess's cabin where McCall is tipped off about Troop forcing a confrontation.

Marshal Troop receives a report that the outlaws Wade Horgan and Cole Hawkins killed two more men in Casper and decides to go on their trail alone. While cooking his meal, a bear attacks and mauls Troop who empties his revolver into the bear before it dies. A young woman, Betty Horgan, finds him and takes him to her cabin despite the fact he is a lawman after her brother Wade. Troop's arms are severely damaged so she bandages them and feeds Troop. She keeps telling Troop her brother and Hawkins will return soon and kill him. However, when they return she continues to hid his identity until they find his horse and saddlebags which tell who he is. Betty has to decide what to do and asks Troop if he will take her with him.

A wagon rolls into Laramie with a man shot in the leg passed out in the back. A little later, a sheriff and deputy from a neighboring community ride in looking for the man, Ben Greene, saying he is wanted for cattle rustling. When the tries to chain and retrieve the man at the doctor's office, Troop tells him the man is in his custody until he is able to travel. The wounded man tells Troop the cattle in question were bought by him legitimately from Gabe Dallas's foreman and he has brand release indicating it. Troop sends Johnny to look for the document but he is turned back by Dallas's men. Troop decides to take Greene back himself. At Greene's cabin, they find the document but Dallas and his men have them trapped there. Dallas confronts the Sheriff who decides he has had enough of the crooked Dallas and decides to side with Troop.

Sgt. Blaney has lost his Sargent stripes and is out for revenge against the commanding officer Col. Ben Steed, Sr. The Colonel's son Ben Jr. wants to be a writer but still has a year in the Army. His father disapproves of his son's choice of career nor his interest in the saloon singer Dora in Laramie. The Colonel asks Dan Troop to locate his son who has been AWOL for four days. He gives Troop 24 hours to return his son before he is declared a deserter. Troop locates Ben Jr. through Dora who reveals that Sgt. Blaney is helping Ben Jr. leave and that he and her were married before he enlisted. Ben Jr. has a decision to make and Sgt. Blaney is celebrating his revenge.

The Shoshone Indians are on the warpath due to a group of buffalo hunters invading their land. Billy Bright, an old mountain man, also known as squaw man to many of the Laramie locals because he lived with the Shoshones is being accosted by the buffalo hunters in a saloon forcing Marshal Troop to intercede. Although Billy Bright throws a knife at the men, Troop does not arrest him and sends him out of town. He meets with Blanket who is half Shoshone but finds that Blanket was burned out by the buffalo hunters. They leave on foot but a local reports to Troop the buffalo hunters caught Billy Bright and hung him. Blanket escaped. Troop leaves to track down the buffalo hunters trailed by the Shoshone war party lead by Chief Little Wolf. When he finds the hunters, the entire group is attacked by the Shoshones with Troop taking an arrow in the shoulder. Everyone is killed but Troop who is tended to by the Shoshones. He is released and as he leaves he asks why he alone is being released. Billy Bright was the father of Chief Little Wolf.

Recently released from prison Kurt Monroe a renown gunslinger arrives in Laramie minus a gun. He informs Marshal Troop he is waiting for his fiancé to arrive on the stage and then they are heading west where he wants to start a new life. He encounters an old sidekick Chalk Hennesey along with Chalk's friends who call Kurt yellow for not wearing a gun and continue to taunt him into having a gunfight with Troop. Kurt successfully resists until his fiancé does not arrive on the stage causing him to start drinking and eventually strap on Chalk's gun to call out Troop. Troop is forced to try and defuse the situation if he can.

Several friends are celebrating the marriage of Lily to Big Hat Anderson. When Harry Tate decides to leave, Big Hat gives him his signature hat. Harry is shot and killed as he leaves the saloon. Harry's daughter, Julie, arrives in Laramie after his funeral and is upset with Marshal Troop for not arresting her father's killer. Troop suspects the highly respected local gunsmith Frank Slater. After talking to Lily he learns that Frank had also proposed to Lily. When Lily confronts Frank about the issue, Frank tries to kill Lily.

A misunderstanding involving a foreign chef boils over when he is offered a partnership at a local restaurant after agreeing to work elsewhere when he entered the country. With his papers misplaced when he arrived, he didn't know where he was originally supposed to go. Troop must intervene before this goes too far as the chef has run away and is now armed.

Beth Hunter drives into Laramie with the body of Sam Turnbull who has been shot. Beth tells Marshal Troop that Sam showed up with a mortgage paper for the money they borrowed and tried to take their homestead. Her husband Tracy shot Sam and ran off. Sam's close friend Bliss Carter is out for blood. Troop creates a four man posse which includes Bliss and Fent Harley a gambler and gunman to go with him. They catch up with Tracy when his horse is too tired to carry on. After the posse has left, Beth confesses to Johnny that she shot Sam when he made advances toward her. After Tracy gives up without a fight, Bliss with the cooperation of everyone but Fent and Troop decide to lynch Tracy.

Jack Rollins a renown gunfighter rides into Laramie saying he has personal business to attend to. Troop gives him two to three days to take care of it. One of the town's young rowdies decides to test Rollins and fails. When the Welch family learns Rollins is in town, they relay their concerns to Troop. Their son Jamie who they have never legally adopted is the son of Rollins. The two have been spending considerable time together and Jamie worships Rollins. When Rollins tells the Welches he wants Jamie back, Troop decides to intervene.

Major Ben Rogers is considered locally to be a hero of the Civil War for his actions at Pell Creek Bridge. However, he is notoriously difficult to work for and in the latest incident uses a bull whip on his cowhand Davey Catterton for breaking an old branding iron. When Davey attempts to buy a gun, Troop intervenes and goes with Davey to collect his wages and belongings. Rogers's wife Cynthia pays Davey but has had enough and decides to leave Ben. When the stage arrives in Laramie, Colonel French steps off and recognizes Ben who has come after his wife. French tells Rogers he is sorry about the court martial Rogers received. When Davey overhears this, he challenges Rogers who reverts to the Civil War battle when he hears the gunshot that wounds French. Rogers takes over the saloon as he re-enacts the battle forcing Troop to bring him back to his senses.

Troop receives a wire from Clay in Arizona that he will be there in six days to help Troop fight the Hayes gang of seven. Troop had sent them to prison. Clay arrives while Troop is out and after a rest he and Johnny are confronted by two members of the gang in the street. Clay shoots both men but is wounded. When Troop arrives, they mention Clay's dead wife Virginia who was courted by Troop as well but strained the relationship between Clay and Troop. When Troop asks the town for help, no one but Johnny is willing. Troop and Johnny wait during the night on the street for the rest of the Hayes gang. When they arrive a shootout ensues with Troop being wounded and the wounded Clay appearing unexpectedly with a shotgun to help but he is killed as Troop and Johnny kill the rest of the gang. With the fight over Johnny finally asks Troop who Clay is. Troop's response is "My brother."

Virgil Carey is in jail and is due to be hung. While guarding him Johnny is duped and the prisoner escapes. The town council is angry and because of his age and inexperience want his resignation.Troop defends him. They set off to look for Carey and the first stop is the Carey family cabin. In a shootout both Troop and Jonny shoot and young Davey Carey is killed. Troop lets everyone know it was his gun that killed him...even though it was Johnny's.

Three young cowhands hired by Ike Smith are more interested in making a name for themselves than working. When Ike fires them, Hoak shoots and kills him. They take Ike's money and leave for Laramie. At the same time Troop is leaving Laramie to check on Ike and his hands. His advice to Johnny is to back away from trouble - if he can. When the young toughs arrive in Laramie and accost Julie, he tells them to move on. At the saloon they become abusive forcing Hank, the bartender, to ask Johnny for help. While seated with a cup of coffee and his hands under the table, he forces the three toughs to leave as they think he has a gun but it is a teaspoon. When they hear everyone laughing at what happened in the restaurant, they shoot at the chef and go after Johnny. He kills Hoak and Troop arrives unnoticed in time to wound Zach. When Johnny tries to apologize for not backing down, Troop replies you can't always do it.

Larry DeLong was sent to prison for three years by Troop. He returned to Laramie a reformed man. Although close to Troop and respected by his boss, he isn't interest in making friends with others resulting in people not trusting him. His reputation with a gun makes him ideal for riding shotgun on the stages. However, when he returns to Laramie with a dead driver and the story his old gang killed him, people except for Troop feel Larry is involved even though there was nothing to steal on the stage. Troop has to stop them from riding Larry out of town on a rail. The stage line representative takes a posse after the Marraday gang. Troop and Larry realize that Marraday's statement he never killed a man for nothing may have a hidden meaning. He wants a posse to chase him while the gang robs the bank. Troop and Larry are forced to face the gang alone before the posse returns.

Marshal Troop receives a letter from Ward Beech, a friend, stating he is being held in Socorro, New Mexico, for a murder committed on the same day he was in jail in Laramie sleeping off a drunk. When the marshal at Socorro telegraphs back that he has never heard of Ward Beech, Troop decides to go to Socorro himself. After he arrives and starts questioning people, he finds no cooperation, but several indications that people are lying and covering up the facts. The man supposedly killed is said to have moved to Arizona by his ex-employer, a rancher who runs the community. The only witness who finally recalls the truth is the city drunk who was jailed with Beech and mailed the letter for him. When the local marshal refuses to take action, Troop decides to arrest the father/son involved in the murder and cover up but he is outgunned.

Lorna Williams is out for revenge for the murder of her boyfriend at the hand of the Pierce brothers. She found and killed Frank Pierce from whom she learned his brother Joe is in Laramie. However, Lorna does not know Jim or what he looks like. Marshal Troop receives a wire relating Frank's death and that Lorna is headed there looking for Jim. Lorna arrives but Troop is unable to convince her to leave Jim Pierce to him. Lorna meets Jim in the bar where she works but does not realize who he is. Troop tracks down an identifying scar on the back of Jim's right hand. Jim upon hearing about Frank's death at Lorna's hand, decides to return to Laramie to kill Lorna but instead shoots her roommate Wanda. Troop and Johnny hear the shots. They trap and kill Pierce and his partner while Wanda dies in Lorna's arms.

Ben Adams was imprisoned for 2 years along with the Blaine brothers who received longer sentences for stealing $15,000 from Wells Fargo. As he is released, the brothers make plans to meet him after they escape to split up the money they have hidden. Ben returns to Laramie where Troop has helped him find a job at the livery stable. A rancher Clint Porter wants Ben driven from town as his daughter Nancy and Ben were in love. Ben also renews a friendship with Rose who works at the saloon and is good friends with the Blaine brothers. When Nancy sees Ben, she tells him she still loves him and wants to stay with him. Her father seeing the meeting starts to whip Ben but Troop intervenes. When Porter sends his cowhands to drive Ben out of town that night, Ben decides he must meet the Blaine brothers and return to crime. Nancy and Troop with a tip from Rose follow him to his meeting where the Blaine brothers have recovered the money. Ben is forced to decide his future as they all confront each other.

Three men arrive in Laramie and setup in the loft of a barn. One of them is a sharpshooter with a scoped rifle. Their plan is to shoot the senator making a brief stop and speech at midnight at the Laramie rail station. A telegram arrives for Troop telling him of the impending assassination but no details. He and Johnny canvas the town for strangers. They find one man at the hotel who is drunk but a second telegram clears him. When one of the men stops at the saloon for a drink and hears Troop is looking for them, his spying on the Marshal's office arouses Johnny's suspicions. He is killed when he tries to ambush Troop. Troop notices a special cartridge the man is carrying and they decide to count horses to find the gun that fits it. They find a horse with a split horseshoe that Troop is able to track back to the barn where the other two men are positioned.

Gloria Hobart, a saloon girl, is found dead and her expensive ring missing. She had given her notice and was planning to leave town. Zach Adams, her employer, posts a $500 reward for the discovery of Gloria's murderer. A young Albert finds himself in constant trouble, first stealing sugar and then the barber's favorite razor after receiving a free haircut. When Troop searches Albert's cabin, he finds the stolen razor but also the missing ring from the dead girl. Zach's brother-in-law Link runs down a boy in the street and is arrested for it. Dr. Stewart reports to Troop he found Albert shot and brought him to his office where he died. Troop spreads the word Albert is still alive and stakes out Albert's cabin with Johnny as Albert. The killer of Gloria and Albert shows and Troop learns that Zach was planning to run off with Gloria but events take a further turn for the worse.

Marshal Troop rides into Laramie exhausted just as the bank is held up and the robber rides past Troop. He goes alone after the robber and catches up with him. However, the robber, Ches Ryan, shoots Troop's horse leaving Troop to continue on foot until Johnny catches up and Troop takes his horse. Ches arrives at a cabin and intends to trade horses as his is injured but he finds a girl and her younger brother alone sick from a plague that has hit the community. He goes for a doctor but is told there is no help available so he stays to tend to them. Troop arrives and helps until he too comes down with the plague. When he awakens from it after 2-3 days, he finds both the kids and Ches still there tending to him.

Doc Holliday, in town to meet a young lady, has to defend himself in a card game which goes wrong. The man, Treb Cates, who shot him in the back and whom Holliday killed in self-defense has a father and two brothers of equally repugnant reputation and they are unhappy about the new developments. Troop visits the Cates family to explain and try to dissuade them but fails. Troop then holds Holliday in jail while awaiting the stage and the arrival of angry Cates kin seeking revenge.

Buck Walsh has pulled together four outlaws plus himself to pull off a large stagecoach robbery at Laramie. One of the men, Glen Folsom, an alcoholic stops at Laramie for a drink and is arrested by Troop after shooting up the Bluebonnet Saloon. When jailed, Folsom mentions Walsh will be coming for him making Troop suspicious. Walsh's man tries hiring a local lawyer to bail Folsom out but Troop refuses to grant bail. Folsom sobers up but is hurting due to a lack of alcohol. Troop provides Folsom with liquor causing Folsom to provide more details of Walsh's plans. Walsh knowing Folsom's drinking problem has him killed while in jail. Troop learns there is a large gold shipment by stage the next day and decides to set a trap on the stage for Walsh's group.

Whiskey Jimmie, who makes illegal whiskey, finds the body of Running Deer at his door with a knife in him. He moves the body to Laramie where Johnny finds the body. Marshal Troop and Johnny return the body to Chief Red Horse who decides to hold Johnny until Troop returns with the murderer, or next morning when he will put Johnny to death. Troop brings in Whiskey Jimmie based on mule tracks at the scene but he believes Whiskey Jimmie to be innocent. Whiskey Jimmie tells Troop the likely culprit is Nat Gruber who says he hates Indians but likes to chase Indian women including White Cloud who was Running Deer's wife. Gruber pushes the men in Laramie to burn out the Sioux camp. At the same White Cloud tells Chief Red Horse what happened when she learns Gruder no longer wants her. Chief Red Horse, White Cloud, and Johnny ride into Laramie where White Cloud confronts Gruber in front of the Laramie men.

Marshal Troop has to leave Laramie leaving Johnny alone to watch over the town. Buck Harmon who is now part of an outlaw gang outside Laramie is sent in to check out the town. His father is there but the two are estranged as his father is a very religious person and believes Buck has strayed from the righteous life he should lead. When Buck fails to persuade Johnny to leave town, he decides to help his old friend against his outlaw friends when they hit Laramie. Before the resulting shootout Buck's father is walking in the street. Buck pulls him out of danger by knocking him out. He comes to in time to sees his son go down on the right side of the law.
