When the boys object and Mr. Mueller warns them (in a not-so-nice way) to stay off his property or face arrest, the boys plot their revenge. However, Lassie has sensed a softer side of Mr. Mueller and eventually breaks down his defenses. That night, Mr. Mueller, exhausted from the stress of both keeping youths off his property and the stress of running his farm alone, falls ill with pneumonia. Lassie comes to visit, sees Mr. Mueller sweating profusely and delirious in bed, and runs to Jeff for help. Jeff initially resists wanting to help, particularly after his earlier encounter with Mr. Mueller, but eventually realizes he needs to help him. Ellen calls the doctor, and eventually everyone -- even those youths who were offended by his earlier admonition to stay away -- pitches in to help Mr. Mueller. Eventually, Mr. Mueller recovers and is back to his old irascible, healthy self in no time.
