Jess riding with Sheriff Cory find the camp of three men they think robbed the Laramie bank where one of them shot Mike Williams wounding him severely. They find two of the robbers shot along with a faked third man. One man is still barely alive. He tells them the third man went by the name Mitch and bought his horse in Chloride, a nearly broke mining town. Sheriff Cory must return to Laramie so Jess Harper decides to go on the trail of the third man alone with Sheriff Cory's badge to prove his identity. His only clues are the name and town. Jess arrives in Chloride on a lame horse and finds himself short on friends and long on enemies when his reception at the livery stable turns into a fight. His only ally is Jamie, the groom in the livery stable tending his horse, who ends up saving his life after Jess asks one too many questions. Jamie has his own need for revenge and Jess won't rest until the man who wounded Mike is brought to justice. It's Jess and Jamie against the corrupt sheriff and his partner - among others.

Slim Sherman and Jess Harper become involved in presidential politics when General George Barton visits Laramie. Jess is riding shotgun on a special stage carrying General Barton, his daughter Lucy, and political aide Jeremy Thorne, along with an Army Captain and Sergeant as aides and for protection on horseback. At a stop near the Sherman station General Barton decides to ride there cross country alone but Jess accompanies him for protection. They are surprised by three men who try to kill the General while resting near a lake. The General only receives a mild arm wound while Jess is able to mortally wound one of the attackers who all flee. There are people who don't want to see him run and when the assassination attempt is foiled by Jess, the opinionated General decides to recuperate at the Sherman ranch. His daughter and Thorne want him to bend to the views of the party supporters. This embroils all the residents of Sherman Ranch and Relay Station in a tense and dangerous situation.

Vince Jackson meets Harvey Dodds in a stable at Cheyenne. Dodds has paid Jackson $300 to leave his daughter alone, but Jackson has reneged on his promise. He puts on a shooting demo by singing Dodds' coat with bullets but his partner Hutch stops him before he puts a bullet in Dodds head. Meanwhile, in Cheyenne, Kitty McAllen is being stood up by Slim who has to ride a stage hoping to catch road bandits. Kitty is miffed as he leaves, so when she runs into Vince Jackson at a restaurant as she waits for her father Fred, they accept Vince's offer for dinner. The next day Kitty and her father, with Vince, take the stage to their home in Laramie with a stop at Slim's ranch. Kitty not only ignores Slim but stands him up that night for a dance to attend with Vince. Slim and Jess are not fooled by Vince's slick clothes and manners but Kitty soon finds herself the target of Vince's extortion plan.

Slim is leaving for Cheyenne on company business while the stage driver, Mose, gives Jess a letter he received in Laramie. Jess Harper is filling in as deputy sheriff in Laramie when he discovers vie the letter his big sister Francie is not dead as he's believed for four years. Francie has come to Laramie seeking Jess' help to bury her "dead" husband, gunman Ben McKittrick. Ben was wounded by the Keefer brothers and is hiding after having killed one of them in a fair fight, Francie hopes that Jess can help her fool everyone so that they can live in peace. It becomes complicated when the three Keefer's show up in Laramie demanding the body of McKittrick. They hide the wounded Ben at the Sherman ranch while Jess keeps an eye on the Keefer's in Laramie. So begins a dangerous game between Jess and the Keefers with the townspeople of Laramie in the middle as the Keefer's damage their property hoping to force someone to tell the location of Ben. In the end either Jess will be left standing or the Keefers will.

Slim has tracked money stolen from a stage by playing poker with a young Virg Walker at Cedar Bend. $20,000 was stolen and two men killed when the stage was robbed. Slim is able to ride off with Virg not realizing one of the other men in the game was one of the robbers who leaves to warn the rest of the gang. Slim finds Virg has $200 of new bills in serial number order that he is sure is part of the stolen money. Virg gives his word to not escape on the way to Laramie but at the first camp he tries to knock out Slim and escape. The fight is interrupted by the grizzled old prospector Cletus McBain who helps Slim after determining he believes Slim over Virg. That night when a rattlesnake nearly strikes the sleeping Slim, Virg yells and Cletus kills the snake. The next day Slim learns more about Virg on the road. They run into a young talkative girl, Ginny Malone, stranded with a broken wagon. They end up camping in a cave during a sand storm where Slim is blindsided the next morning.

Jess Harper and Slim Sherman are on the trail of missing cattle and have been separated by a dust storm. Jess, injured by a falling tree, wakes up from passing out tries to make it back to the Sherman Ranch. In pain and disoriented Jess ends up a remote area where he runs into an old friend, Christy, who he once saved and helps Jess now. Jess finds out that Christy and his friends the three Banister brothers are responsible for rustling cattle in the area, including the Sherman cattle. Christy helps Jess on to his horse telling him to find a local ranch when a shot rings out. Jess ends up passing out at a water hole and wakes to find himself under the care of Sharon Helford and her father. Sharon is the only one who believes Jess isn't one of the rustlers when everyone else is ready to hang him. The only way he can prove he's innocent is to go after Christy and the rustlers himself, which could be a dangerous proposition.

It's the annual Sunday Shoot in Laramie and it's drawn shooters from miles around, all vying for the $1000 prize. Hobie Carson and his intended, Nancy Telford, are counting on winning so they can buy a bottom land farm, but they are mountain folk unused to ways of town. Rafe Seton is a man of unsavory reputation who is also competing against Slim Sherman and Jess Harper and there is bad blood between Seton and Slim. When Hobie wins, it becomes a tale of the country mouse as Seton and his cronies set up the young man to steal his winnings, to the dismay of Nancy. Rafe along with his female partner Dixie con Hobie into thinking they are his friends making him believe he is a big man in Laramie while Nancy wants to leave. It's up to Slim and Jess to help Hobie and Nancy especially when Seton wants Slim dead.

Three outlaws lead by Al Denning force a wealthy rancher to give them a bank draft for $25,000 plus a letter allowing the bank to give them the money. Hoping for more, Al leaves him dead with a knife in the back. Local drunk Charlie Frost rides into the Sherman ranch telling Jess and Daisy that he found the rancher dead. Jess rides with Charlie to report the murder to Sheriff Cory. Meanwhile, the three outlaws are at the Laramie bank cashing the draft. Being short on paper money, the banker offers to give them most of the money in double eagle gold pieces which they accept but weighs about 100 pounds. When the bank hears that the rancher has been killed, the banker reports the incident to Sheriff Cory. Cory puts together a posse with Jess, rancher Joe Farley and his foreman Ed Casson along with farmer Sam Moore and Charlie Frost. Moore, broke, needs the money while Farley is mad at Casson for paying too much attention to his wife. On the trail the outlaws try to use the gold eagles they leave as bait to push the posse into fighting. It appears to work but for the wrong reasons.

With Jess and Daisy at the ranch taking care of Mike, Slim is on duty as a temporary deputy for Sheriff Cory bringing in Steven Collier, a member of the territorial legislature, for trial on murder charges. At about the same time a stage arrives with a group of women suffragettes led by Leora Scofield. Daisy is in town with Mike for supplies when she sees Leora who she knew when they were younger. Daisy invites Leora and her friend Phyllis Wynn to dinner at the Sherman Ranch. Slim drives them to the ranch where he and Leora don't see eye to eye. He takes the two guests back to Laramie and to return to the jail. There is worry about attempts on Colier's life but they are surprised when Phyllis is used as a pawn to sneak a rigged gun to Collier intended to kill him but instead a deputy is killed. Sheriff Cory and Slim are now faced with two prisoners and unknown killers.

The stage arrives at the Sherman Relay stage with a very sick Annie Whitaker and her teenage son Skip on board. Annie once nursed Jess back to life after a blizzard so he will do anything for her. She knows she is dying and is trying to take her son Skip to his father Leo McCall who she left years ago. Realizing she is going to die before they can reach Leo, she makes Skip promise to go to his aunt in Denver instead of his father. However, Skip wanting to see his father doesn't tell Jess who has promised to take them to McCall at his ranch. On the way to McCall's ranch, Jess is forced to kill one man and catches the second trying to force Skip to give his dad's location. It turns out Leo McCall is a very dangerous killer with a big bounty. They leave the second bounty hunter and Skip tells Jess the truth so they head for Denver. McCall finds the second bounty hunter, kills him and then heads for Skip who tries to leave Jess for his dad. McCall takes the pair back to his ranch but Jess knows McCall will never let him leave alive.

A wagon accident results in severe injures to Steve Prescott, son of wealthy rancher Vic Prescott who happens to be away from the ranch. The foreman, Hobey, sends two of the men on the long ride to Laramie for Dr. Phillips. Stopping at the Sherman ranch for fresh horses, they find a doctor there waiting for the stage to leave after changing horses. The men force the doctor to go with them as Jess is in Laramie and Slim is rounding up strays. Mike goes after Slim who returns and heads to the Prescott ranch to check on the doctor. The doctor is forced to amputate Steve's left arm which everyone knows will upset his father but he believes Steve will fully recover. Vic upon returning is an angry father who believes that the doctor maimed his son. While returning to the Sherman ranch, the doctor informs Slim that he is the much hated Dr. Samuel Mudd who helped John Wilkes Booth. Vic Prescott also believes that Dr. Mudd, convicted of aiding John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, has escaped from prison. He will do anything to make sure Dr. Mudd dies, including going against his friends and Slim Sherman.

In Casper three men hold up a bank and one of the men, Del Shamley, who is kill hungry hits the teller hard enough to kill him. The three men leave and split up with Ray Vincent taking the money. Their plan is to meet in Laramie to split the loot. Jess Harper is spending the weekend in Laramie as deputy sheriff while Mort Cory is off to Cedar Bend on business. Complicating an otherwise quiet weekend is Parson Hawks who occupies a cell in the jail and Johnny Hartley, Mort Cory's nephew and deputy sheriff wannabe. Mort would like for Johnny who is educated and recently married to a beautiful girl, Carol, to go into another line of work. What Jess hasn't bargained for is the two bank robbers arriving to meet their third partner to split the proceeds of the bank heist. Jess' quiet weekend is about to heat up and the results could get him and Johnny Hartley killed. Del has already had a run in with Johnny in the street followed by Jess and Johnny responding to a call for help when Del and Bart try to force Ray's girlfriend Lottie Harris to tell where Ray is.

After a cattle drive he led to Riverton, Slim is confronted by Mr. Patton whose son was killed by a card shark back in Riverton. Everyone backs up Slim that he was not responsible for what happened to Marty Patton. Upon learning from Daisy that the Patton family is nearly broke, Slim returns to Riverton to investigate what happened and get the $3,000 belonging to the Pattons. He learns that Marty Patton was killed by Lee Christy in a fair fight. Marty had been fleeced by the gambler McKeever and his partner Heron. When Sheriff Tate is forced to shoot and wound Lee, Slim decides to help him handle the fallout as his deputy while looking for McKeever. McKeever and Heron decide to rob the bank followed by Tate overhearing them splitting up in their hotel room. He interrupts them killing Heron. The sheriff is in love with a saloon girl and finds the money the thieves left behind. He offers to take the girl away for a new start. How will Slim get the money to save Mr. Patton's ranch back in Laramie?
Episode 14

Sheriff Mort Cory is leading a posse with Slim looking for Joe Morgan who headed into the rocky cliffs as night comes on. Mort wants to turn back but Slim decides to climb the cliffs alone as the posse covers him. He slips in the underbrush falling down a cliff and breaking his collarbone. The next day while working Jess spots Joe and tries to take him in but Joe refuses to surrender. Jess Harper is a marked man after he shoots and kills Joe who was accused of robbing and murdering a local man. Compounding matters, Morgan was found to be innocent of the murder and Jess's fatal shot caught Morgan in the back. Morgan wasn't without friends and they, along with Morgan's girl Gladys, plot to make sure the Morgan brothers, Mac and Al, pay Jess back for killing Joe. With Sheriff Cory using Jess as bait to draw Al and Mac out and Slim injured, it's too dangerous for Jess to be at the ranch. Then Jess injures his gun hand after a dust up with Joe's lowlife friends, putting him a disadvantage in any gunfight. It's a game of cat and mouse to see who will be victor, Jess or the Morgan brothers.

Walt Douglas is an executive of the stage line who comes to Laramie looking for his estranged daughter Alicia and stops off at Sherman Ranch and Relay Station to ask Slim Sherman, Daisy Cooper and Jess Harper if they've seen her. Slim and Daisy haven't but Jess has and only admits it to Slim after Walt leaves. Jess knows Alicia at Leora, a saloon hostess he's met in town. What neither of them knows is that Leora/Alicia is involved with Cass and Willard, a couple saddle tramps looking to steal the mining payroll that's coming in. Slim rides to Laramie hoping to convince Leora/Alicia to speak to her father and makes an enemy of Cass. All Leora/Alicia wants to do is shoot him and does. Walt Douglas won't press charges but Mort Cory will so Slim offers to keep Walt and Alicia out at the ranch until a hearing can be arranged. Cass and Willard decide that it would be easier to steal the payroll from the relay station and take Slim, Daisy, Alicia and Walt hostage until the stage come in the next day. It becomes a tense waiting game with Daisy trying to convince Alicia to turn her back on Cass and give her father a chance. With Willard not planning on leaving any witnesses, time is running out for the hostages.

Jess is walking in Ironwood after delivering horses nearby. A man, Sheriff Douglas, walks up behind him sticking his pistol in Jess' back telling him to walk over to the sheriff's office. Watching this unfold is Kett Darby and his pal Moss. Darby has let it be known that Jess is really outlaw Ray Thatcher hoping Jess will become irritated enough to join his outlaw gang lead by Thatcher. Jess shows the Sheriff his id and tells him why he is in Ironwood but Sheriff Douglas is still convinced he is Thatcher but he has to release Jess. He wants Jess out of town now but Jess refuses to leave until the next morning after he has eaten and rested. Outside Darby bumps into Jess and they decide to share a drink and meal. Jess soon detects that Darby's interest extend to their waitress Lorrie. Jess has no interest Darby's proposal but after Lorrie asks Jess' help, he decides to tell Sheriff Douglas the little he knows. Jess soon finds himself facing a murder charge, aiding and abetting the Ray Thatcher gangs robbery of the bank and a hangman's noose. His only salvation is Daisy Cooper, Lottie, and escaping jail to find Kett Darby to clear his name.

During the evening when Slim goes outside he is greeted by a gunman who takes him to the camp of outlaw Gil Harrison. Gil was a war time friend of Slim who once saved his life and the ex-husband of Stacey Bishop, a neighbor. She is marrying Lee Taylor in a couple days at her father's remote but large ranch. Gil wants Slim to know he plans to stop the wedding as he wants Stacey back. Gil blames Stacey's dad Ed Bishop for their divorce. Slim and Daisy are invited to the wedding a day early plus Daisy has made the wedding cake. Slim and Daisy make it to the ranch but find the gate locked and the foreman, Red, won't let them in due to orders from Ed. Stacey rides up from outside the ranch and tells Red to let them in. However, she didn't know they were coming a day early due to a note in the wedding invitation. Turns out Stacey's younger sister, Marilee, has her eyes on Slim. The Bishops know about Gil's threats and it is causing friction even between Stacey and Lee. Gil abducts the foreman's son forcing the ranch hands to leave putting everyone in danger.

While returning to the ranch with a stray, Jess spots a man being chased by three Shoshone braves. The man risks his own life to run them off by wounding one. Afterwards he returns the horse and rifle to them he took when a brave tried to scalp him. He then massages Jess's sprained knee which Jess had sprained during the gunfight. He introduces himself as Gandy Ross, a safe cracker trying to go straight, who's run into a bit of bad luck when he meets up with Jess Harper and Slim Sherman. Gandy starts working at the ranch but the Wellman gang wants Gandy's safe cracking services and will stop at nothing, including framing him for a stage robbery and murder, to get him to help them rob a bank in Granite City. Things get complicated when Jess ends up escorting Gandy back to Cheyenne with the sheriff and ends up inadvertently aiding him to escape. When the authorities in Cheyenne discover that Gandy Ross was not part of the stage hold up, Jess heads to Granite City and Gandy's girl friend Amy to try and stop Gandy from making a big mistake, which puts Jess in the middle of helping with a bank robbery. Time is running out for Jess, Gandy, and Amy because Sam Wellman intends on leaving no witnesses.

Slim Sherman is part of the posse trailing after fugitive stage robber Joel Greevy and his two partners, when alone Slim catches up with Greevy and is shot by the thief and left for dead in the hills. Jess who is with the rest of the posse notices Slim is missing and no one knows where Slim is. Jess, trying to backtrack Slim, catches Greevy who is riding Slim's horse back to Laramie to retrieve the money and see his older sister, Myra. The cocky thief won't tell where he left Slim unless he is set free, telling lies about what happened at every turn. Jess even pleads with Myra for help but she initially refuses. Jess is backed into a corner and with bad weather closing in he has to play a desperate game with Greevy, which could jeopardize his friendship with Sheriff Mort Cory, in order to save Slim's life.

Slim and Jess encounter three women in the foothills on their way to Joe Belden's ranch to buy horses. The women are traveling with three mustangers who are very protective of them. At first one of the mustangers wants to kill Slim and Jess for bothering the women but the leader of the group, Sam Dillard, lets them go. Later, when Slim and Jess arrive at the Belden ranch they help Joe and his brother Luke plus their foreman Prentice as they fight off a fire at their barn which appears to have been set with burning Indian arrows. When they tell the ranchers about the group of mustangers they encountered and the women with them, the ranchers come to believe that the mustangers are actually Comancheros who have been stealing their horses and decide to go after them. Slim and Jess accompany them, hoping to avert bloodshed.

A trio of thieves rob the Sherman Ranch and Relay station, wounding both Jess Harper and Mr. Frazer from the stage line office, who was carrying the money. With information from Jess, Slim Sherman, still sworn in as Mort Cory's deputy, is able to trail the thieves until they split up. Slim catches up with one, killing him in self defense, which puts Slim in danger when it turns out that the man he killed is Hank McGovern, son of Ellen McGovern, wealthy rancher in the area. Ellen refuses to believe her son guilty of theft and attempted murder especially since Slim cannot produce the money or a witness. With Slim's status as a deputy affording him some protection, Ellen McGovern puts a price on his head. Slim is in a race against time to prove Hank's guilt and find the money before Hank's two partners or he loses his own life. Slim's only allies are the reluctant Laurie McGovern, sister of the dead man and the equally reluctant Jim Lassel, Ellen's ranch foreman.

Bob Blayne was a gunman five years ago when Deputy Jess Harper shot and maimed his hand. Blayne's sons, Bill and Larry, believe that Jess has ruined their father's life and want to see him dead. Bill believes he can gun Jess after he shoots down a friend of Jess' and Bill's friends encourage him to try. The problem is Jess Harper refuses to rise to their bait even as everything in him wants to. Bill, Larry and their friends lure Jess into Laramie by badly beating Slim Sherman. Jess takes the bait and ends up killing Bill in fair fight. A grief stricken Larry ambushes Jess but only ends up making Jess mad and breaking his own arm. Bill's friends convince Bob Blayne to let them run Jess out of town. This sets up the final showdown where Bob Blayne and Jess Harper stand against the men who want to kill Jess.

Slim Sherman finds himself playing detective when he gets involved in with Tah-Za, an Arapaho chief who admits to murdering a hired hand of Slim's, Ben, on Slim's ranch. Slim knows that Tah-Za is covering for someone else because the facts don't fit quite right. Ben had been in a fight but Tah-Za has no marks on him. What Slim doesn't know is that Tah-Za is covering for his son Diamo, who accidentally shot Ben while he was protecting his pregnant wife. Meanwhile, Daisy Cooper and Mike Williams find Diamo and his wife in their barn for protection while she has the baby. Kindhearted Daisy takes them in to care for Winema as her time draws near. She is having problems with the delivery so Daisy sends Diamo after Doc Higgins. While Ben's brothers are trying to frame the Arapahoes for their thievery they are also bent on killing the man that's responsible for their brother's death.

Irv Richards is a gambler and ex-con with a poor reputation around Laramie. His old gang come to Laramie to rob the mining payroll from the bank and they want Irv's help. He refuses but is 'convinced' to do it anyway when his daughter Ellen is threatened. Jess Harper was riding shotgun on the stage that was supposed to carry the payroll but wasn't able to pick it up because of flooding. The gang doesn't know this and try for the payroll anyway, but Richards double crosses them and is shot because they believe he stole the money. The wounded Richards meets up with Daisy Cooper and Mike Williams on the road and they take him back to Sherman Ranch and Relay Station, despite the fact the gang is searching for him. Richards wound is not fatal, yet. The damage done by the bullet will kill him in months. Slim Sherman and Jess Harper aren't happy with having Irv at the ranch but he can't be moved so now they are faced with protecting not only Daisy and Mike from Irv's gang but also Irv himself.

Jess Harper finds that gold is at root of all evil while paying a visit to Stede Rhodes and his wife, Ann. The Rhodes are on a homestead Stede is about to lose because he is unwilling to work the farm. Jess offers a loan they turn down but they are willing to take a loan of used equipment and gear at the Sherman Ranch. On the way there they come across a loose pack mule that, on closer inspection, is carrying sacks upon sacks of gold. This causes Stede to turn on Jess when he disagrees with Stede over what to do with the gold. He sends Jess off with no gun or horse while he and Ann head out across the badlands. Jess meets up with Roger Canby, real owner of the gold and they chase down Ann and Stede, but Canby is not the jolly person he appears. He buried his two partners alive in their mine because of the gold and he'll do anything to keep it, including kill again. The tug of war over the gold could cost Jess a friend and his own life.

Jess Harper is planning on riding shotgun on a stage run carrying a bank shipment when Dave Bryne tries to bribe him to look the other way. Jess tries to get Bryne arrested but skinflint stage office manager Art Potter won't press charges. To further complicate matters Potter finds out about Jess' checkered past and orders him to stay away from the stage. Mort Cory gets Jess to catch up with the stage outside town. The stage is robbed anyway with Mose and Jess getting wounded. Jess chases down the thief who grabbed the strong box but he doesn't have the money. It's now a case of who's got the money and puts Roy and Martha Halloran squarely in the cross hairs because Martha found the strong box and Roy insists on keeping the money, lying to friends and himself. His lies could cost him Martha, his friend Jess Harper, his honor and their lives.

A bushwhacking attempt on Jess Harper by Ned Billings reveals the wreckage of a Union gold wagon stolen by Confederate raiders and opens old wounds for Slim Sherman when accusations against his father helping the rebels are resurrected. Jess took Ned's body to Sheriff Cory who contacted the Army. They send Maj. John Ellis and Sgt. Nolan to investigate. During the war the Confederates stole $60,000 from the Union. Slim's father was involved but he never told Slim how. Slim and Jess set out with Maj. John Ellis and Sgt. Nolan. Nolan notices they are being followed. It turns out to be James Courtland, the officer accused of helping the rebels steal the gold wagons, and his son Will. They hope to find the lost convoy and prove his father was innocent of helping the Confederacy. They aren't the only one's interested in the lost gold convoy, there are others that will stop at nothing to get the gold, including the real Yankee traitor that helped steal the gold.

Emil Viktor is living in the steep and rugged mountains near the Sherman ranch. Emil has been killing Slim Sherman's cattle to feed his family, who live on a run down ranch near the mountains where he's been hiding. Slim Sherman and Jess Harper have been unable to capture the elusive stranger that's been paying for the slaughtered cattle with $10 gold pieces. When Mike Williams admits to having been helped by the mysterious stranger, both Slim and Jess begin to have their doubts. Emil is on the run from a trumped up murder conviction and crooked Sheriff Vanton Madox and his posse after escaping jail the day before he is to hang. Sheriff Cory is with Madox and asks Slim and Jess to help as he doesn't have a good feeling about Madox. The situation gets complicated when Jess is rescued by Emil after a bad fall and finds out the true story of why Sheriff Madox wants Emil Viktor dead.

Vern Buckner wanted for murder has been captured but there is a possibility that his brother Clint and his gang are going to try to free him while he is being transported. Sheriff Cory tried to arrest a man, De Walt, who he and Jess think was going to help based on a map he had. Cory is wounded and De Walt dies so Jess decides to ride to Stillwater Crossing which is near the Buckner gang home, Ironwood, where the Marshal must cross the river. Jess is critically wounded by Clint Buckner's gang when he attempts to prevent the ambush of the tumbleweed wagon transporting Clint's brother, Vern to his hanging in Cheyenne. With Jess needing a doctor, and not likely to survive the trip to Laramie, Marshal Branch McGary and Deputy Reb Carlson along with driver Patches are forced to head for Ironwood and straight into the arms of Clint Buckner and his gang. Buckner kidnaps the town doctor in an attempt to force Marshal McGary to free his brother to save Jess' life.

Jess has no proof the man broke the law but believes he is gathering information for the Logan gang who has been hitting stages and killing company workers. Four men attack but Jess thinks he wounded one. Later, mortally wounded Sam Logan arrives at the home of Rev. John Holby. Sam and John rode together and Holby was once a bounty hunter. Sam tells John there is a $5,000 bounty on his head and to turn his body in saying he shot Sam in a fight. John against his wife's wishes does it with Jess verifying the body. Chuck Logan hearing about his brother decides on revenge not realizing the truth. They attack the Holbys but wound Laurie Adams. Her fiancé Bob turns the town against Holby leaving Jess and the Sheriff to protect them.

Slim and Mike are preparing to go fishing in a remote valley stream when they notice buzzards overhead. Slim finds a young woman, Nina Richards, severely injured so he sends Mike for help as she is too injured to move by horseback. Returning from gathering firewood, he is shot by the two men who kidnapped her. However, the bullet hit the firewood causing Slim to fall into the river and float away. He tracks the two men to a cave and captures them when they are all caught by the girl's rancher father and his hired hands. The father assumes that Slim is a member of the kidnappers and plans to have all three men hanged. Slim finds himself mistaken for the other dead kidnapper Collins killed by Genoway. Actually, the rancher's foreman is in league with the two kidnappers, one of whom, Jim Genoway, is a ruthless killer, the other a young man, Tad Henderson, who is in love with the girl and was beaten by her father, Owen, because of it, and wants to get even with him for his brutal methods.

Slim is taking a herd of cattle to Cody, Wyoming to sell when he is fired upon by a young man causing him to be knocked out when he falls off his horse. After waking and telling the young man he is not from Cody, the man warns Slim that according to his dad there are no honest men in Cody. After selling his cattle for $500 at Cody he enters a saloon for a meal and drink. Ruth Franklin, working as a saloon girl, foils the plan by three men including the deputy, Ross, to rob Slim by spilling a drugged beer on him. Realizing she might be in danger, Slim follows her and knocks out Ross who tries to attack her. Afterward, she persuades Slim to come to her house and help her wounded father, who plans to return $50,000 that he embezzled from a Helena bank (but has never spent). Slim agrees to take them to Helena by wagon, but they are trailed by the same men who had earlier planned to rob Slim and now hope to take the money Mr. Franklin is carrying for themselves.
