Episode 1
The first heat of season 5 features 8 invited artists producing a landscape of Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse in Plymouth, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card painting a view of Plymouth Sound. The judges will pick a winner to advance.

Episode 2
The second heat of season 5 features 8 invited artists producing a landscape of the Herstmonceux Observatory, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card capturing a view of Herstmonceux Castle. The judges will pick a winner to advance.

Episode 3
The third heat of season 5 features 8 invited artists producing a landscape of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card capturing a view from Gateshead Quayside. The judges will pick a winner to advance.

Episode 4
The fourth heat of season 5 sees 8 invited artists producing a landscape of Herstmonceux Castle, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card capturing a view from the castle orchard. The judges will pick a winner to advance and a wild card.

Episode 5
The fifth heat of season 5 features 8 invited artists producing a landscape of the Gateshead Tyne Bridge, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card nearby capturing a cityscape. The judges will pick a winner to advance and a wild card.

Episode 6
The sixth heat of season 5 features 8 invited artists producing a seascape facing Drake's Island from Plymouth, while 50 other artists vie for a wild card with another seascape from Plymouth. The judges will pick a winner to advance.

Episode 7
The fifth season semi-final features the six heat winners and a single wild card, their task is a seascape of the Firth Cromarty and a group of massive oil rigs being repaired. From these competitors the judges will select three finalists.

Episode 8
The fifth season final features the three finalists producing a landscape of Battersea Power Station at night, they are also each given a commission to paint a different landscape with distinct characteristics. Prize is £10,000 commission.

Episode 9
The winner of the season four of Landscape Artist of the Year undertakes a £10,000 commission from the Royal Institute for British Architects to create a landscape of Venice to commemorate the bicentenary of art critic John Ruskin's birth.
