Cable's niece, a mute young woman named Mattie, has also followed the outlaws' trail and manages to hide Johnny before he can come to further harm. Romance develops as Mattie and Johnny try to form a plan to survive the impending showdown with the murderous brothers.

After they have gone, the owner also realizes that the vegetables he sold them are contaminated, and Johnny and the sheriff rush to find Scott and the miners to warn them.
