It's three months before present day. Ruby's latest relationship has just ended after three dates, the end initiated by her despite both realizing the disaster that was that date ending. And even though she sees a new client as a potential rebound boyfriend, she has in the back of her mind words by Dr. Debra to examine her past in moving forward in her love life. But the road to present day arguably changes when she learns that a boyfriend from college, Brandon Rafferty, who she hasn't seen since college fifteen years ago, has just passed away. Although he just being a footnote in her life, she decides to go to his service with AJ in tow partly to make amends for the horrible way she treated him. The service turns out nothing as she expects, including running into Jeffrey, Brandon's best friend who she hooked up with one time immediately after breaking up with Brandon. That encounter with Brandon makes her try to reconnect with another past lover, she ultimately noticing a pattern with all three.

While AJ tries to find a connection, Ruby believes the fact that three of her exes have recently died is just coincidence, that is until she witnesses number four pass away in front of her eyes. To give themselves a break from the mystery in they both now believing the deaths not being pure coincidence, they focus on having a fun "girls Thursday away" to the wedding of another one of Ruby's exes, Robert Lobdell, who many believed at the time was the one Ruby was destined to marry. While AJ knows that she will see recent ex Zack there as he refuses to relinquish being her plus one, Ruby is quietly irked that she did not get the benefit of an invitation including a plus one, not that her latest crush Isaac would have been that person in she learning some recent information about his life. That lack of a plus one issue affects what happens to Ruby.

With six of Ruby's exes now dead or imminently about to die and with AJ figuring out that they are dying in chronological order of when Ruby slept with them, the two decide to take proactive action while mostly AJ tries to figure out if there are any underlying factors in seemingly knowing more about Ruby's sex life than Ruby. One of those actions is informing the police as Ruby believes someone is behind all the deaths - a so called stalker - in that person being her angel of death perhaps, in his obsession, hearing her make some flippant comment about wanting so see so-and-so die. But the other action is to contact all those exes to tell them that they are about to die, the next ones in what AJ calls a cluster in Ruby having gone on a meaningless sex spree following her serious relationship with Robert. In the process, Ruby has to decide if she will tell AJ about what happened between her and Zack following Robert's wedding. And Ruby cannot help but still view men as potential partners/sex partners, Isaac, despite being a client about to get married, becoming more and more attractive in she learning something about him. Those feelings are tempered by something else she learns about him.

As AJ continues to update the crime board, including setting up her phone to ping any time another of Ruby's exes dies, Ruby continues her quest to find and warn those exes in order within what she and AJ had originally coined the post-Robert sex cluster. Ruby ends up having four very different conversations, two with Richie who she only has vague remembrances of in terms of the details, and her one and only celebrity, gay stand-up comic John Early; the other two with Isaac and Zack. She comes to the same conclusion at the end of each of those conversations, with only Richie being forthright enough to state that conclusion in no unequivocal terms. Ruby and AJ just need to wait to learn of Richie's, then John's deaths. Ruby still can't help but believe that she is meant to be with Isaac, and she wonders if she should tell AJ the truth about what happened between her and Zach after Robert's wedding.

What had been Ruby's ex-lovers dying in order of when she slept with them hits a bump when death skips one, namely Richie. With Ruby, Richie and AJ curious as to what is going on, Ruby is able to convince Richie to accompany her to talk to subsequent sex partners in perhaps Richie's anomaly rubbing off on those following him. In turn, Richie proposes an arrangement with Ruby considering her predicament, which affects her more than she initially realizes when something happens with Isaac. Two other people become interested in what is happening. The first is Zack who discovers Ruby's sex board, and cannot help but be concerned in the secret he and Ruby are keeping from AJ. And the second is Detective Brenowitz, who now has to take what is happening seriously following the "predicted" death of a celebrity, John Early.

With AJ having thrown Ruby out in the revelation of what happened between Ruby and Zack, Ruby turns to the only other person now meaningful in her life, namely Richie, who becomes, not only her sole sex partner, albeit only a surrogate one, in he being the anomaly in not having died like all the rest, but her roommate and wingman. As such, Ruby, delegating her work for Isaac's parents' anniversary party to a colleague in not feeling equipped emotionally to deal with her feelings for Isaac directly, takes Richie to visit the next ex on the list, another she believes in hindsight was the one that got away, Aubrey, who she can now admit to herself was the one who made her realize her own queerness. And as a straightforward telling of the facts hasn't seemed to work with any of the other exes, Ruby decides to take a different approach with Aubrey. Ruby and Richie's meeting with Aubrey and AJ's physical extrication of anything Ruby, and Zack for that matter, from her life lead to different but profound revelations.

AJ is back on the case with a new wingman in Brad ostensibly replacing Ruby as the two continue to shut Ruby out of their lives. Seemingly the one person who tries to bolster Ruby is Richie, that is until someone temporarily gone reenters her life. But when the group believes they've figured out what is happening with Ruby's exes, Ruby has to decide if she will take the steps to rectify the situation, she doing so which may end up confirming all the negative things her "friends" have said about her of late.

With Ruby and Isaac embarking on a relationship, including sex of sorts which they feel is safe, Richie is left out in the cold and much like AJ is shutting Ruby out of his life, including forcing her to move out of his apartment. Zack continues to try and get AJ to take him back, his tactics which he wants to show are him actually having heard what she has said to him over the course of their relationship. Through it all, Ruby decides what to do about the hex. What may override everything is Ruby's latest session with Dr. Debra who has some parting words, one specific nugget of which which hits home with Ruby, and Richie taking unilateral action on a matter.
