Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are Washington, D.C.-based private investigators. Both are former Secret Service officers who left after having protected persons in their care killed and kidnapped. King is questioned by the FBI after his good friend, lawyer Ted Bergen is found dead, shot in the head. Bergen had recently taken on the case of accused serial killer Edgar Roy and Bergen's secretary Hilary Cunningham is subsequently killed as well. Roy's sister Kelly Nelson hired Bergen and is convinced he is innocent. When they learn Roy had recently worked for a major defense contractor competing for a major contract, they're certain he was set up.

Michelle suddenly finds herself under investigation by FBI agents Rigby and Carter when someone takes a shot at a visiting Georgian politician, Nikoloz Arziana, wounding a Secret Service agent in the process. Michelle has a history with Arziana: when assigned to his protection some years ago while she was still in the Secret Service, she stopped his aides from smuggling a drugged and nearly unconscious 14 year-old girl into his room. Rigby won't reveal what evidence he has implicating her but that doesn't stop her and King from investigating on their own. With the help of their new employee Edgar Roy, they trace the origin of several phone calls where the caller stayed on the line for several seconds before hanging up. When Edgar determines that one of the calls originated on a cellphone from within the FBI building, King knows who is responsible.

King and Maxwell offer their services to FBI Special Agent Darius Carter after they learn he's been suspended for striking a police officer during a routine traffic stop. Carter says he showed the cops his badge and but they were completely uninterested. They told him to get out of the car and one thing led to another. Maxwell quickly finds evidence that Carter was set up and that the cops were likely paid to do it. King concludes that it has to be related to one of the cases he was working on. When one of Carter's informants is killed, it leads to a drug cartel and a U.S. Congressman.

Sean King and Michelle Maxwell work with FBI Special Agent Rigby on the case of 13 year-old Noah Allen, who has apparently been kidnapped by the SLS, a high-end Columbian kidnapping ring. The family has hired a kidnapping consultant, Joan Dillinger, who worked with Sean when they were both in the Secret Service. King begins to doubt the SLS is involved and discovers that Noah's mother Liz has a secret. He and Michelle set up up an elaborate ruse free Noah and keep Liz out of jail. Edgar meanwhile sees something in the assassination video that led to Sean's departure from the Secret Service. Sean just wants Edgar to drop it but he may be onto something.

Sean pays his condolences to old friends Jack and Nancy Turner's whose son Jason died after he threw himself off the building where he works. They don't believe Jason killed himself and it doesn't long before Sean and Michelle agree with them. When another former Secret Service agent is killed in a bombing meant to kill his brother, Sean believes someone is seeking revenge by killing the agents loved ones. Sean thinks it's connected to a detail in Mexico to protect the Secretary of Homeland Security in which he, Jack and several others including his old friend Bob Scott, participated. An agent, Bradley Martin, was killed in the line of duty during that detail but Michelle is having trouble determining exactly what happened. She soon finds out when she becomes the killer's next intended victim. Meanwhile, Edgar finds another oddity in the Ritter assassination video.

Sean and Michelle are hired by Congressman Brady Ritter, son the Vice Presidential candidate who was assassinated on Sean's watch. He's now running for Senate and wants to find the blogger who has been writing articles about him and his family. Sean is more than a bit uncomfortable working for Ritter but the Congressman assigns no blame for his father's death. It take them little time to find that the blogger known as the Madam Beltway is actually Angela Miller but they no sooner find that she is killed. Finding her source is the next step but Sean and Michelle have to move quickly if they're to find him before the assassin does.

Michelle is surprised by the sudden arrival of her brother JT who, it turns out, is now a private but needs help since he isn't licensed in D.C. He's working for Elroy Culpepper who has hired him him to check up on Tommy Smith, someone his daughter Claire met on the Internet. They trace him to a cheap motel and search his room where they find he has ID cards in several different names. One of the IDs is for St. Bartholomew's hospital in Baltimore, a lock-down facility for the criminally insane. They learn he tried to gain access a few days before but was unsuccessful. When Claire shows up they try to convince her that Tommy is a con man but she isn't buying it. Turns out she's right and her boyfriend has a good reason for having a false identity.

Sean and Michelle are hired to find a stolen phone allegedly for its sentimental value. However, the phone has something on it that is of interest to a lot of people and find themselves pursued by the FBI, a shady lawyer, and a drug cartel.

Needing forensic assistance, King and Maxwell invite themselves to the FBI DC HQ. Just when grumpy Rigby promises help 'when I get to it', the top-secret key witness he was questioning is fatally shot from the corridor by someone acquainted with the security camera angles. The interim Assistant Director is eager to put blame on his favorite victim Rigby. The murder weapon points to Russian 'source' Ivan Ratslov, but he has a credible alibi. King fields the home front, even Edgar's robot, to help avoid standing up a Congressional committee expecting the victim's testimony.
