Beyond the Fringe

To kick off the season, Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman are going back to the 1970s and shag carpeting as they challenge the 12 young competitors to make shag cakes. Each baker must make a cake in their chosen flavor (determined by grabbing one of 12 records) and then decorate it to create a shag texture. American buttercream and a grass tip on a piping bag are the main tools of the day. The twist challenge requires adding a fruity flavor to their cakes. The winner receives an autographed picture of Valerie and Duff in their 70s clothes, groovy, man.

1, 2, 3 Delicious!

Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman challenge the 11 young bakers to create assigned Neapolitan desserts featuring chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. Once the bakers pop a balloon they receive their assigned baked good (macarons, blondies, eclairs, etc.) that will need to be "neapolitanized" in today's challenge.

The bakers arrive to find Duff slicing meat in a butcher/sandwich shop set. What do sandwiches have to do baking? It can only mean that it's the most anticipated episode of the season -- dessert impostors. Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman challenge the remaining 10 bakers to create desserts that look like sandwiches. Sandwiches must be one of the 10 featured sandwiches in the "sandwich shop." The twist challenge, as always, is to create a side dish to go with their featured sandwich, this time it is coleslaw. Order up.

Duff and Valerie give a demonstration on making a stamp out of a potato with a cookie cutter and using gel coloring to achieve the desired design. The twist challenge asks each baker to add their "monogram" initial to a cookie.

The twist challenge asks the bakers to create an egg to go along with their dinosaur creation.

The Fruit of Your Labor

Fruit is an important element of baking, so Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman challenge the final three bakers to make fruit cakes, but not the holiday kind. Instead, they have to make cakes that look like actual fruit. The bakers are assigned either an orange, pineapple, or watermelon. One baker will then walk away with the title of Kids Baking Champion.
