The son of millionaire Conrad Cain and his wife Ellie, 15-year-old Leopold, is kidnapped on his way to school. The bodyguard, Virgil Hayes, is left for dead at the scene. Cain, who has a lot to hide in his past, hires Private Investigators Knapp and Turner, both of whom work outside "The System" to find his son. "The System", represented by Federal Agents Latimer King and Andy Archer, also begin to investigate the case, against the Cains' will.

As Lucian checks out what a surprisingly aware convict knows about the kidnapping (a taunting and malicious fellow from Lucian's own past), tensions grow between Leopold's guards, compounded by a local authority ready to take advantage, himself.

The investigation gets a good throttling when Benjamin Rand, Leopold's maternal grandfather, gets wind of the kidnapping and takes charge with iron-fist tactics. He sets up Conrad to be arrested and out of the way while having Lucian and Latimer removed from the case. As Benjamin negotiates with James Devere for the return of his grandson, Conrad blackmails Benjamin for Lucian's and Latimer's reinstatements. As a forty million dollar exchange gets underway for Leopold's return, a creeping unease grows between Lucian and Latimer: this isn't a kidnapping - it's something far more personal.

As Virgil goes fishing for the Accountant by setting himself up as human bait, Conrad attends Sully's wake fishing for answers, and Senator Bill Ross meets with Lucian to discuss his relationship with Ellie.

As Malcolm and Latimer track down the likely dead pilot who may have taken Leopold out of the country, Lucian's exposure of clandestine dealings reveals dissension among the kidnappers and puts him aboard a plane to Mexico to retrieve Leopold.

As Latimer gets closer to finding Leopold and/or the identity of his kidnapper, evidence surfaces pegging him as the culprit in Vance's misappropriations hunt. Meanwhile, Ellie learns a curious fact from Conrad's ex-mistress, setting her and Turner into Ellie's past for a potential clue.

Resolution

Their task complete, Lucian and Turner pack up and prepare to leave, but the overly tidy outcome troubles Latimer. Is it over? All things point to a culprit still at large, but one whose motive Latimer can't find, and that bothers him. As he and Lucian independently pursue one last clue, everyone else relaxes, enabling the mastermind to strike a long-awaited fatal blow.
