Following Kevin's attempted suicide, Amy, his widowed twin sister, a tenured aeronautical engineering professor who does contract work for the UN and the US military on the side, invites him to live at the family home in Taylor, Texas until he feels well enough to be on his own again, and has gotten his life back on track, he now an emotional mess of a person. The one person who does not welcome Kevin with open arms is Amy's teenaged daughter Reese, who has been struggling since her father John's death and who cannot forgive Kevin in his selfishness in not being there for Amy in her time of grief, Kevin too preoccupied with what was then his seemingly successful life. His life in Taylor may be all the more difficult in running into old friends, acquaintances and colleagues, such as his high school girlfriend, Kristin, who happens to be one of Reese's teachers. Shortly after Kevin's arrival in town, thirty-five meteor strikes occur within a twenty-four hour period around the world. While Amy is able to report to the military that although unusual in the concurrent numbers, there is no evidence to support the thought by some that they are weapons, such as ballistic missiles launched by enemy regimes. Kevin, who with Reese saw the meteor impact that landed near their home, eventually learns at least the true nature of that meteor in that it was meant for him. Although incredulous to the suggestion when he meets "Yvette" who only he can see, Kevin has to come to terms with the information that she provides him - especially as he does not believe in God - and the mission that God has for him in being the last surviving of the thirty-six of his generation.

Kevin, unsure how to proceed in his newly discovered role to save the world, decides to take the bulls by the horns to be that better person he believes God/the universe, through Yvette, wants him to be. However, he quickly discovers that the signs to be that savior will make themselves known to him. Those signs point to Kevin helping Jake Gilmore, the son component of the father/son business, 3 Roads, a microbrewery. Despite outwardly being happy in his life as a second generation brewer, Jake eventually confides to Kevin his true feelings. That confession has unintended consequences. As such, Kevin isn't sure he wants ever to listen to the universe's signs no matter how difficult they are to ignore. Meanwhile, Tyler throws a welcome home party for Kevin at Frankie's. The party leads to Kevin and Kristin reconnecting in a romantic sense. However, what Kevin thinks it means and what Kristin thinks it means may be two different things based on how their relationship ended the first time around. And Kevin, who is reliant on Amy to get around, hopes that Amy can get the old broken down pickup truck sitting in her garage fixed for him to use as his dedicated vehicle. Items indirectly related to the truck lead to Amy being angry at Kevin for not taking care of himself in the aftermath of his attempted suicide. But her issues with Kevin mask the true nature of what she is feeling specifically concerning the truck.

Sweet Little Lies

With Yvette's general guidance, Kevin and she initially believe his next task is to help himself by not only going to see his New York therapist, Dr. Clark Sloane, but to get some more immediate medical assistance locally. However, what they discover is that his true mission is to help a young, lovely married couple, Deb and Ben, with their formal wedding plans, Deb the local therapist's medical receptionist, and Ben her childhood best friend who is now a firefighter. Deb and Ben got married two years ago in a quickie wedding when Deb was diagnosed with cancer, the diagnosis which made Ben realize that he loved her. Now that she is in complete remission, Ben wants to do the wedding right, which means doing it big. However, there may be more going on with Deb and Ben as a couple with which Kevin has to deal as his core mission. Meanwhile, Amy, in the love she has for her brother, is upset that Kevin seems to be avoiding the therapy to which he said he would go. As such, Amy decides to take matters into her own hands. In the process, she may learn some important things about her own emotional state. In the support Amy asks for from Reese on the matter, Reese continues her own secret recognizance into her uncle's doings. And Yvette receives an unexpected visit which could affect her work with Kevin.

Kevin's initial belief that his next task is to find a job, that job which he is dismayed to think is back in the business world. He soon discovers that the "suit and tie" job he is supposed to find is not for himself, but for Sam Haslett, who has been out of work for some time. Sam's issue is that hasn't told his wife, Tracy Haslett, about being laid off eighteen months ago in the long ago deal they made that he would be the household breadwinner to take care of the family while she was the stay at home wife and mother. In the process, Kevin may discover that his task isn't quite as straightforward as helping Sam get that next job. Kevin has to do this task while he deals with the fact that Amy has kicked him out. Beyond not knowing where his next bed will be as staying with any of the people in Taylor he considers his friends all have their issues, Kevin is not too worried about his sibling relationship as he and Amy have had much worse problems before, he knowing the progression of her anger until he is back in her good books. But as Kevin has changed, Amy too may have changed, especially as her actions are a direct result of protecting her daughter. As such, Reese may become collateral damage in the process.

Kevin and Yvette believe that Kevin's latest vision is a sign that they are getting closer to something as it is a recurring one of blue butterflies, he last having seen them after helping Reese. Thus Reese may be the key to discovering what it all means. But in following the latest leads which Kevin thinks are going to lead to Reese, they lead instead to a man named Ethan, a continuing education art teacher, who is an artist himself but who is afraid to show his art in public despite being given the opportunity time after time as he finds more comfort in the unknown than he is in knowing if his work is any good in the eyes of the public. In helping Ethan, Kevin may forget about Reese, who, despite not saying so, may need her uncle now more than ever. The problem is is that the school play, for which Reese is the stage manager, is the same time as Ethan's art show in Austin. Through it all, the interrelationship between Kevin, Yvette and Dave may end up derailing the mission as Kevin begins to have a greater affinity to Dave, while Yvette thinks that Dave has some ulterior motive in wanting to be on Team Kevin. Meanwhile, Amy has accepted Iggy's invitation to go on a date, which would be her first since John's death. In addition to telling Kevin and Reese, Amy turns to Kristin for advice. But another person in the equation is Nate, who, for some reason, Amy feels she cannot tell about the date with who is another man.

In following the latest signs provided by the universe, Kevin meets Phoebe Powell. According to Reese, Phoebe is probably the person who has been doing anonymous good deeds around Taylor for the last ten years. As her identity is unknown, she has been given the name the Acorn Fairy by locals for the acorn stencil left at the scene of her deeds. Kevin learns, in speaking to Phoebe who admits that she is indeed the Acorn Fairy, that she seeks no fame or recognition in her deeds, but that she has one dream which she has been unable to achieve, namely to open an animal shelter. Without telling Phoebe, Kevin decides that the way he can help her is to make a way for that animal shelter to be a reality within the obstacle of neither of them having any money to do so. In the process, Kevin may see into his future as he discovers that he and Phoebe are more alike beyond both performing good deeds. At the same time, Kevin and Yvette have to figure out who has been writing to Tyler claiming to be the woman he met in Laos - Kevin and Yvette knowing that the Laos woman who Tyler is truly pining for being Yvette herself - and what the motive of this mystery woman from Victoria, BC is. Meanwhile, Simone, Nate's ex-wife, is returning to Taylor to attend a friend's wedding, which Nate and Amy are also planning on attending together. None of the three want Nate and Amy's current dating status to be uncomfortable for any of them. It is, however, something else about Simone's return which makes the situation uncomfortable, at least for one of them.

In doing a favor for Amy, Kevin finds the next person who he is supposed to help. He is a young man named Marc, who is driving across the country in an effort to find a place to set down roots. He seemingly has no money and is looking for odd jobs - as opposed to a permanent job - in an effort to support himself as he is on the move. He is living in his truck, the issue now being that his truck has been impounded for an expired registration, the money he doesn't have to renew that registration to get the truck out of impound. Beyond Kevin giving him those odd jobs, some which are more makeshift work than necessary work, and keeping him out of trouble, Kevin has to figure out a bigger way to help Marc than to give him a few bucks here and there. Someone else may have a better idea of what Marc truly needs. Kevin was hoping for a relatively easy problem person as he admits his focus is on trying to win back Tyler as a friend. With Yvette and Dave's help, Kevin tries those general grand gestures to rectify the issue. In the process, Kevin comes to the realization that he doesn't really know Tyler and as such has not been that good a friend even when they were friends. In Yvette and Dave providing their assistance, they don't want to divulge that Dave is having more human feelings, this time having some ailment that sounds remarkably like the flu, at least to a messenger from God.
