The headmaster's respected cousin arrives to deliver a lecture at William's school and then to declare the usual half day holiday for all. William decides, unwisely to knock his hat off using Ginger's catapult.

After the Brown family attend a whodunit play William fancies himself as a great Scotland Yard detective. In search of a criminal to catch he comes to the conclusion that respectable city merchant Mr. Croombe looks suitably shifty.
Episode 3
William and the lads decide to prepare a historical play set in that interesting time period when according to William, Elizabeth I had nothing much to do after beating the French. They approach local artist Archie to help with costumes.
Episode 4
After listening to a classroom speech on the subject of Shakespeare an enthusiastic William decides that in the approaching school play he would like the role of Hamlet and not that daft one Oafalus that gets pushed in the pond.
Episode 5
The gang decide to help the poor by stealing from the rich to redistribute the wealth. They make a start by selling Mrs Bott's expensive pearl necklace for sixpence. Lady Markham receives the necklace as a gift from her granddaughter.

William thinks that his newly composed Valentine card motto is jolly good and types it out using his brother's typewriter. Poor brother Robert has no idea the mayhem that is about to engulf his dating endeavours.

William's wildlife lecture is placed in jeopardy when the star featured dormouse dies overnight and then some rotter pinches the caterpillar. Luckily two parrots mysteriously turn up. Meanwhile sister Ethel has some admirers to deal with.

The gang learn that lots of old people have never been on a holiday so with the help of Violet Elizabeth they decide to put them all up at Mrs. Bott's house starting with a tramp who happens to be just passing by.
