Reporter Dan Vassar suddenly finds himself transported back in time twenty years, just in time to prevent a suicide-by-bus of a man he doesn't know. When he returns to his present day life he cannot explain his absence to his wife and son. When it happens again, he also encounters the man whose life he saved, so Dan suspects there is a connection between the man and the time-travel. Dan also sees Olivia, a woman he planned to marry but who died. His wife and policeman brother become convinced Dan is either on drugs or mentally unstable, but as the time trips continue Dan uncovers his role in the adventures and manages to convince his wife that his disappearances are in time, not in space.

Flying with his wife to a weekend get-away in Oregon, Dan enters the restroom during the flight and comes out sometimes in the 1970's, when smoking was common on flights -- and just in time to help deliver an unwed mother's daughter. His next trip back in time also has his path cross the woman's, and now she is the mother of a teenager. Figuring this woman is the focus of his current trips, Dan is confused when his next trip occurs years after the woman's death . . . but then he comes across the daughter and the focus shifts to her and the father she never knew. He even encounters the father alone on another airliner, as well as running in to Olivia, herself traveling through time.

Dan travels back to the 1970's and keeps running into a man who may have hijacked an airliner for ransom. Trying to unravel the man's true identity Dan even visits his own father at the newspaper, and sees how little he cared for his family. Using clues from his trips back, Dan plans to run a story exposing the real identity of the hijacker, but when the purpose of his trips becomes clear, Dan's motives change.

On Halloween night, Dan travels back to the mid-80's. He saves one of two brothers who is about to set off a rocket, which his younger brother claims will explode sideways, as it does. On subsequent trips back he follows the brothers, the younger one of which is brilliant and deduces that Dan is time-traveling. Dan and Livia also run into Jack and Katie, which leads to complications since it is about a year after Livia's death, and Dan has just proposed to Katie. Plus in current days, Jack is digging deeper into Dan's life to try and discover what all the mystery is about.

Dan returns to the 70's during the time Nixon's presidency was unraveling. He and Livia team up and are involved in the life of Abby, a young woman whose future keeps changing as Dan returns to 2007, reads what happened to her and goes back and "fixes" that time line. Meanwhile the FBI starts investigating Jack and Dan based on the money Dan brought back from the hijacked airliner and the truth about Livia's time traveling comes out.

Dan Vasser's pre-teen Jon Zack displays disturbed behavior at school and a t home, which Dan realizes fears to stem from missing dad and his firm hand. Dan himself is projected twice to the same space-time-cross to save kidnapping victims, plausibly both abducted by the same landlord. But it's not more complicated, involving drug addiction and another surprise factor. Jack concludes his startled brother Dan needs psychological therapy badly.

Aeden Bennett, who Dan got arrested for multiple child kidnapping offenses last time, is released from jail, and out on violent revenge. Dan survives a shooting but leaps back in time to a home where a young boy is locked in, terrified of his atrociously strict father, who 'grounded' the kid all day. It's young Aden, too scared to accept Dan's help. Adult Aeden now attacks Dan's wife. Jack gets a crucial part.

Dan and his editor are part of the 25% news staff cut back announced by ruthless publisher Dennis Ambaucher on Christmas Eve. He flashes back to 1979, when Dennis succeeded his dad Merrit, who died from cardiac arrest, with Livia, who thinks that's what they must prevent. Dan thinks it's to stop his dad Frank leaving home. Meanwhile his present Christmas party f-holds surprises for his family, including a baby for Jack.

Dan flashes back to 1984 to save teenager Christopher Cupper and his eye-impaired would-be-painter ma Sandra from crashing with their camper into a ravine. Dan's worries about the possible effect of leaving behind a digital camera seem unwarranted, until he discovers his darling son Zac has been replaced by a girl, which his wife wants to keep instead anyhow. He has to deal with the Cuppers in both time zones, guessing Christopher's tech-nerd-friend Dewey Boyd is the key. Meanwhile brother Jack faces his upcoming fatherhood and leans heavily on his FBI contact until he traces a NASA physicist.

Dan's next flash-back is to North Bay psychiatric ward, where patient Evan Pattison, a fellow Stanford student, is kept for claiming to be a time-traveler. Over several leaps, Dan must find out whether that's true and, with Jack's help, what the quantum physicist knows. Both Evan and his true love Lauren are in mortal danger. Dan escapes repeatedly meeting himself to closely. Dan comes to realize his fate is also a unique opportunity and accepts it as his calling, while his wife would still prefer him to 'fix it and get out', hoping for a normal family life.
