Dumped by girlfriend Gemma Josh reluctantly agrees to accompany Owen on a double date with two glamorous older women, Karen and the predatory Valerie who succeeds in bedding Josh. Unfortunately Gemma decides to come back to Josh and is not happy to see Valerie. For Geoff however Valerie provides a welcome reunion after an inadvertently sent email and a night at the cinema have led Kate to believe she was the object of his affection.

Owen drags Kate and Josh to the local curry house which is deserted except for Natalie and Danny, a couple they all knew at university and whom Josh is reluctant to join, finding them very boring. However Natalie is openly flirtatious with him and Kate tells him that she had a one night stand with Danny a year ago, leading Josh to believe the couple have an open relationship. Unfortunately he passes this on to Geoff, who has turned up for his take-away and who naively tells the assembled company, leading to a quick exit by Natalie and Danny, leaving the others to pay the bill. Owen has compensation with a Spice Girl but Josh only has the remains of Owen's curry on his shirt front.

Owen's ex-con cousin Phil comes to stay, taking over the flat to Josh's annoyance and even winning over Geoff. Meanwhile Kate takes the brunt of her mother's hair-dresser boyfriend's anger at being dumped as he prepares her to receive an award in a photography contest. Her subsequent rage gets Phil thrown out of the flat but he has left something behind, which spells bad news for Josh.

After a gig at a comedy club Josh is approached for a date by the glamorous Amy, who is apparently a sex blogger. Thus Josh is worried about his performance with her given the withering comments she has made about past partners. However she is not what she seems - as Josh discovers too late. Kate meanwhile helps Geoff to get rid of Giles, the flat block's officious building manager.

After committing himself to a boring weekend pirate boat party with hypochondriac Pete Josh does not share Kate's enthusiasm on learning that her prankster friend Sophie is coming to stay. Ultimately even Kate gets fed up with Sophie's pranks but when she tries to get her revenge finds that Sophie's mother is just as bad as her daughter. Josh meanwhile turns up to the party out of a sense of duty but ends up wishing he had made up an excuse like Owen.

At a university reunion Josh meets Abby, and, after reluctantly taking part in spinning the bottle, has to kiss her - thus endorsing the wrong supposition on everybody's part - including Abby - that Josh is infatuated with her. So he is very relieved to learn that she has found somebody else - and surprised to discover who it is. Kate encounters former tutor Phillipa, who offers to help advance her photographic career and sends her out to shoot a famous Brazilian singer. Unfortunately Kate's lack of Portuguese leads to her snapping the wrong person.
