JERICHO is a drama about what happens when a nuclear mushroom cloud suddenly appears on the horizon, plunging the residents of asmall, peaceful Kansas town into chaos, leaving them completely isolated andwondering if they're the only Americans left alive. Fear of the unknown propels Jericho into social, psychological and physical mayhem when all communication and power is shut down. The town starts to come apart at the seams as terror,anger and confusion bring out the very worst in some residents. Jake Green, theprodigal son of the town's mayor, becomes a reluctant hero when a school bus crashes as a result of the explosion. Mayor Johnston Green is conflicted with the return of his estranged son,but is called to action when the town begins to riot. Johnston's wife, Gail, is the strong, savvy first lady of the town who runs interference between her husband and her favorite son. Attempting to usurp the mayor's power is Johnston's political adversary Gray Anderson, who is not above putting his personal agenda before the welfare of the very community he wants to lead. Though the cloud appears in the distance, it affects all the residents in Jericho, including Dale Turner, the 16-year-old trailer park kid everybody picks on who finds himself in a position that could change his status; Robert Hawkins, a mysterious stranger who seems to be a jack-of-all-trades as he steps in to help restore order; Heather Lisinski, apretty, young school teacher on the bus with her students returning from a class trip when the glare from the explosion causes a terrible accident; Emily Sullivan, Jake's high school sweet heart who lives outside of town and innocently goes about her business unaware of the catastrophe, Bonnie Richmond,a pretty 17-year-old who is hearing impaired; and Bonnie's older brother Stanley, Jake's best friend from childhood and an avid car lover who works onthe family farm. In this time of crisis, as sensible people become paranoid,personal agendas take over and well-kept secrets threaten to be revealed, somepeople will find an inner strength they never knew they had and the most unlikely heroes will emerge.

Four days after the nuclear bombs, the radio-active fog has cleared. Jake finds radiation victim Victor Miller, who broke into the pharmacy and warns 20 men are coming from Denver. Dawkins recognizes and sneakily tortures him to death. Jake and Stanley handle the hospital's generator problem. Dale donates food he found in the derailed train to replace Gracie's looted store stock. Jake organizes a search party, which only finds corpses. Haughty Sky holds a party despite the general shortages.

Everone in Jericho was waiting, then suddenly there's a short automatic, probably nation-wide telephone-message from Homeland Security: they are taking over. Shortly afterward Internet, radio and TV are reserved by the military. Jake's mother insists his dad proved his love by fixing everything after Jake left; it's time to tell him the full truth. A power cut is followed by an overload which starts terrible fires all over the place, threatening various machines too, and thus the water supply. The Green men lead the fire fight with fair success. The mayor tells Jake it doesn't really matter what he did in San Diego, he was changed by it from a stupid punk to a fellow to be proud of. The mysterious Robert 'Rob' Hawkins proves very handy at many things, not fathering.

After another power cut, all Jericho sees missiles in the air, but whose? An Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) has massively shut down electronics. A fast-rising problem may overtake the technical disaster: men, boys, even females become increasingly defensive, possessive and even aggressive, social order and community spirit are in danger of breaking down. Jake is determined to handle it, including horse theft by the Mitch Cafferty gang, but his father the mayor insists the Greens at least must respect the law while trying to uphold and enforce it. Largest farmer Stanley refuses to simply share his crop, and is falsely accused of stealing pesticides. Even good boy Dale is initiated in the Cafferty gang during a raid on the Green ranch, but switches back after a talk with forgiving Jake.

Goetz' 'federal team' (in fact Ravenwood's mercenaries, who even kill to steal supplies) claims only to collect supplies for the government, but is met with utter suspicion. The Greens tell Stanley he and everyone else must retreat from the eastern part of town till after the Ravenwood attack. Jake's men stop the vanguard at an improvised roadblock, and are given a four-hour ultimatum - they decide to blow up the bridge, irreparably, but Stanley and Bonnie choose to take their chances in their ancestral home farm, while Eric and Johnston are determined to save the bridge at any price. Meanwhile the women plan a wedding for Roger Hammond and Emily Sullivan. Jake makes a solo-stand with the detonator, backed up by Robert Hawkins as sniper, then Eric with Jonah Prowse's men arrive behind the mercenaries and save the day, at least until the neighboring towns are plundered. Gray Anderson (as elected mayor) then pulls rank on Jake: the bridge must stay - they agree instead to train a security force. For training Jake will use granddad's military manual from D-Day.

On turkey-hunt, which proves most 'recruits' for the security force are unskilled or inept, Jake and Stanley suddenly see military planes dropping unannounced supplies.Jake, Stanley and the townspeople cautiously inspect the supplies, made and labeled in China, parachute-dropped from Vietnam-era Russian-made airplanes, as Jake noticed. They fear poisoning to prepare a land invasion, but the civilians fight for everything; Gray tastes the food, which come with fliers 'China is your friend - Do not fight'. Mitchell Cafferty's gang plunders Gracie's store, she accepts the mayor's offer to serve as town depot. Stanley sends his girlfriend to get Jake as they even found a generator, but is meanwhile attacked and robbed by Jonah's men, who want compensation for loosing the store. The mayor heads an attempt by persuasion or force to make Jonah surrender at least the generator. Jake and Hawkins discover the parachutes have microchip-tags, only used by the US military...

Eight weeks after the bomb, the day before the mayoral election, gentle Dale finds his employer, shopkeeper Gracie, murdered. Mitch Cafferty says Jonah Prowse claimed the murder and offers to help find him. Gray Anderson makes mayor Johnston Green's initial unwillingness an electoral issue, so a search party is formed, in fact several, uncoordinated. Mother Green tells 16 year-old Dale he's the shop's heir, even though Dale was mad at Gracie before her death, and offers her help; Sean's street gang intimidates Dale. Jake finds Jonah wounded at Emily's but is also held at gunpoint, told Mitchell and his own men did him in; Jonah faints, later flees while Jake informs dad the sitting mayor, but is caught by Gray's men, which swings the election his way. Cafferty asks Dale 50% protection money 'dont't repeat her mistake'. Jonah is on death-row by Gray's one-man tribunal, but when Jake calls Gray's bluff to be judge and executioner, Jonah is left to leave, helped by Emily. Now many weeks-long wanderers arrive destitute, including Roger. Dale shoots Mitch.

As Jericho's fuel supplies are barely enough for two weeks now winter approaches, a party must search for the parts to repair the windmills which are their only alternative. Jake and his dad ex-mayor Johnston Green take charge, and luckily have a supply of salt from the mine, as their apparently more valuable barter goods are less in demand at the Black Jack Fairground market, which also centralizes news, so they learn that no less then six federal government members have taken over 'control' of part of the country after the president's death. Dale finds the trader is criminal and when Johnston refuses to deal with him steals the part, but is seen and captured; freeing him makes the part go lost.

Because the supplies will never last everyone trough the winter, mayor Gray Anderson decides the last wave to have arrived should leave. Jake is startled to find USMC men and a tank roll in, telling now the war against Iran and North Korea is won, the federal government reunifies in Columbus, Ohio and promises to normalize life, but Jericho, being in a better state then most of Kansas, will probably get a low priority for engineers corps help. Jake helps lance corporal Maggie Mollin repair a radio, which alas orders the platoon to rejoin the division. The mayor swings a deal with the commander, but Jake smells a rat and sends Stanley on reconnaissance; Army veteran dad Johnston Greene agrees they are fake Marines, who now have superior firepower and half the town's supplies, but they can be outwitted, only- what about the effect on the local moral?

Dale is cheated out of his contractual percentage, but the mayor has other priorities, so his gun does the convincing. April Green's own pregnancy is now very problematic; plastic surgeon Kenchy Dhuwalia is unwilling to operate in primitive conditions, tries but the generator diesel runs out, the baby is lost, April dying. The neighboring Newbern mayor who can supply windmills demands more salt and a bigger share of the next spring crop for it then Jericho can spare, but the people don't know the Marines' promises were bogus; Stanley suggests to promise now and decide later whether to pay; ten Jericho men must go help build them, de facto also hostages, including Stanley and Eric.

One Man's Terrorist

Kids find military equipment in a barn. People learn the Marines were fake, the rations won't last, even cut badly again, so mayor Grey orders the refugees to a FEMA camp; they rather fight, especially Kyle who even stole, while Roger and Jake still hope to make a deal; his barricade is undone by teargas. Arguing with Roger, Gray pulls a gun but gets shot himself and taken hostage; Jake tries to prevent Roger being shot by the police; all ends well as mother Green finds others prepared to let refugees share rations and live in empty houses, only Roger is exiled. Dale and Skylar steal a horse, which they are prepared to return, and the fuel Simmons owed him and refurnish the shop.

Deputy Roger insists to Jake that Robert Hawkins used a fake FBI badge, like the radio reported terrorists did, his house has plenty of suspicious goods. Jake waits for him, armed and generally well-prepared. Hawkins does his story, claiming to be a CIA satellite expert, one of many send to different places to look for a series of nuclear weapons used by a dark coalition of religious and other terrorist organizations who have nothing in common but their hate for the US government.

The Jericho men return early from New Bern, where they helped building the wind-turbines, but Eric Green is missing since three days. Jake is determined to find his brother, and takes Hawkins with him; the town is almost in ruins after Ravenwood's gang. Sheriff-mayor Phil Constantino suggests maybe Eric doesn't want to be found after April's death; next the word is he returned to Jericho with Heather, but a note with an address is slipped to them; there they kidnap deputy Perkins, Hawkins prepares to torture him, the bluff works. They go examine the secretive factory. They find an inventory of Jericho's resources, a map how to carve it up between Constantino and Perkins- and a ammunition factory. Constantino's men apprehend them- in jail Jake sees Eric.
