The Invisible Wound

Janet is appointed as a Royal Commissioner to look at gun crime in Sydney as the state government is unhappy with the police response. The first episode in Season 2 sets up the first public hearings with a sub-plot about the death of her spouse and her battle with post traumatic stress disorder.

In the aftermath of the drive-by shooting at the Nobakht house, the Royal Commission turns its attention to where George Healy got his gun. But even with the threat of a five-year jail sentence, he's not talking. Meanwhile, Janet has been summoned to appear in the Equity Division of the Supreme Court by Ash's sister, Deborah Larsson, who is arguing for Ash's last remaining frozen embryo to be released to her so she has a chance of having kids. While Janet argues that the embryo is property - and furthermore, her property - an unhelpful Justice Felton and an emotional plea from Deborah foreshadow a far more complicated case than Janet anticipated. Meanwhile, Keisha Gibson is now squarely in the spotlight as being involved in Todd Wilson's shooting because she fled the scene with a bag full of cash. Hoping she'll lead them to the shooter, Federal Police Sergeant Bianca Grieve coordinates the surveillance on Keisha, but it only leads to Richard, who convinces Keisha to turn the money in. But she's unable to shed any light on where Todd got the money. As car crash victim Jane Carter's condition deteriorates, Janet warns George he's looking down the barrel of a manslaughter charge if she dies. He agrees to talk, but he wants full immunity and a new identity, which a less than impressed Attorney General, Lincoln Priest reluctantly agrees to grant. CCTV footage is uncovered revealing that Todd broke into local developer Patrick Bocarro's Ferrari and stole a small box. But what was inside it? Was it something valuable enough to sell for $300,000? When Janet and Owen approach Patrick expecting animosity, they find an unexpected ally who says he's willing to help Janet in her strained relationship with the Attorney General. Ballistics from the Nobakht drive-by reveal the gun matches two other shootings - the kneecapping of gambling addict Felix Murphy, and the murder of Ash Larsson. As Janet reels from this bombshell, Andy and Heather go to bring in George Healy - only to find him hanging from a tree.

In Plain Sight

The Royal Commission has now established that three crimes: the Nobakht drive-by; the murder of Ash Larsson; and the kneecapping of Felix Murphy, are all linked by the same gun. Under their terms of reference, Janet's unable to investigate her partner's murder, so her team concentrates on Felix. But he isn't talking. Believing the person who shot Felix is integral to solving the three crimes and to uncovering the bigger picture of firearm circulation, Janet targets Felix in an undercover operation, with Sergeant Bianca Grieve as the operative. Meanwhile, Janet's court case over Ash's frozen embryo has gone to mediation. While confident that her legal argument is sound, she's dealt an emotional blow when one of Ash's emails is read out, articulating the pain Janet had unknowingly inflicted upon her partner. Still reeling from this fresh personal blow, Janet is then told the DNA from George's crime scene matches Ash's killer, meaning he's closer than they thought - and could possibly strike again. Despite being urged to step down for her own safety, Janet refuses to be cowed. She asks Tony to take the twins to her mother's place in order to keep them safe as she realises her personal quest to solve Ash's murder is trespassing ever closer to the Commission's terms of reference. With suspicion rife that Todd's money was the proceeds of the sale of a stolen Ferrari 458, it's revealed that in the missing hours before he died, Todd was with Karen Parker, a subordinate of Major Simon Hamilton. And that Major Hamilton bought the same model Ferrari two days before Todd was killed.
Episode 4
The Smoking Gun

After intense questioning of Lance Corporal Karen Parker, suspicion only seems to mount as it's revealed that Todd had defrauded her CO, Major Simon Hamilton. The Royal Commission questions Hamilton, but he denies owning a Ferrari, and also refuses to say where he was on the night Todd was killed. But further investigation by the Commission uncovers that Todd didn't just steal Simon's credit card details, he stole his whole identity, which he then used to purchase the Ferrari. Though it does account for the bag of cash he had with him when he died, frustratingly, the car deal doesn't seem to explain why he was killed. Meanwhile, in order to strengthen her claim to Ash's embryo, Janet tries to persuade the sperm donor, Tim Dolan, to support her. But in court Tim refuses to consent to either Janet or Deborah having the embryo, and says he wants it destroyed. Sergeant Bianca Grieve goes undercover to make contact with Felix and manages to score a date with him. But their meeting is compromised when Richard and Keisha arrive at the same bar. As suspicion of Simon Hamilton continues to mount, they receive a customs alert from Port Botany to say a container in his name is about to arrive. Expecting to find a cache of drugs, Janet and the team race to the docks, but when they open the container they discover a shipment of Zodiac PT92 semi-automatic handguns.
Episode 5
Apprehended Violence

The firearms are deactivated and Janet's team leaves the container under surveillance for collection, only to discover it's Amil Nobakht's phone number on the paperwork. But Amil doesn't initiate the pick-up. With growing political pressure to start showing results, the AG, Lincoln Priest, orders Janet to write an interim report. But she refuses - saying she'll write it only when they make real progress. Meanwhile, the embryo case is now in the probate division of the Supreme Court, where, with Tony's help, Janet finally succeeds. During therapy, Keisha says she heard a woman's scream the night of Todd's murder. Lina and Andy have no luck finding this witness, so with the container still uncollected, Janet decides to escalate the undercover mission. Undercover, Bianca and Andy arrange to stage a fight where he abuses and threatens her in front of Felix, hoping to trick him into revealing who shot him. Bianca surprises the team by showing up with her face bruised, making the abuse look more physical. The plan works and Felix contacts the standover man who shot him to warn Andy off. Meanwhile, Janet is raided by the Corruption Commission who confiscate her devices. Meanwhile Andy and Bianca wait for Felix's shooter - a man who's potentially Ash's killer - and it's Brett Bonar who appears. And he's armed.

The Thaw

When Bianca is forced to shoot Brett Bonar, Janet's best lead to the firearms, and finding Ash's killer, disappears. Meanwhile, Bahman and Sam Nobakht are intercepted trying to leave the country with $30,000 in U.S. currency. They say they were returning to Iran to pay officials to keep Sam out of the military, an obligation, with ISIS pressing on the Iran-Iraq border, that could prove fatal. They say the money was for helping to import the container, but didn't know it held guns, and when they tried to pull out after Todd's death, Brett shot up their house. Brett's flat contains an arsenal of weapons and DNA results tie him to the murder of George Healy - meaning he knew Ash's killer. Janet is at the Corruption Commission under investigation for perverting the course of justice - the result of a text she sent Richard advising that drugs left in a common area make ownership impossible to prove. It seems someone has Janet in their cross hairs. Too paranoid to name the person he owed money to, and by extension who ordered Brett to shoot him, Felix leaves Bianca a puzzle to solve which points to the name of the man responsible. And the answer suggests it's bookie- turned-businessman Bao Long. Heather discovers from Simon's phone that he and Robbie Carter met on HookUp, a gay dating app. Is it all starting to fall into place?

The Heart of It

Growing increasingly impatient with the Commission's lack of results, the Attorney General, Lincoln Priest gives Janet an ultimatum: resign as Royal Commissioner or have her reputation ruined by the State Corruption Commission. Janet refuses, but fortuitously for her, they quickly solve Todd Wilson's murder - a tragedy of errors involving Simon Hamilton, Robbie , Jane Carter, and a 3D-printed handgun. Meanwhile, the fight over the embryo is headed for the Court of Appeal, where Deborah Larson mounts a challenge to the original decision to grant Janet ownership. The appeal is overruled. As the hunt for Ash's killer continues, a series of events sees the suspicion on Bao Long mount. Bianca volunteers as Janet's minder, and the close living quarters lead to a new level of intimacy between them. Janet hatches a plan to catch the importer of the handguns still sitting on the docks, but it requires placing an unprecedented amount of trust in Owen, a colleague typically governed by self-interest. As part of the ruse, Janet orders the suspension of the Royal Commission, and a termination of all surveillance operations, except for one hidden camera.

The Long Goodbye

Janet enlists the assistance of DPP Tony Gillies to persuade ICAC Commissioner Roger Embry to withdraw the corruption allegations against her. With the Royal Commission into Gun Violence back on track, the team is able to put faces to the big players in the gun importation racket, with some interesting results. Suspicion continues to grow that there is someone within the team who is involved in the conspiracy surrounding the guns and Ash's death. The full genetic screening results, combined with circumstantial evidence, provoke Andy and Bianca to precipitately arrest their suspect. Janet and Richard clash over his decision to represent his former colleague at her bail hearing. However, just when she thinks the danger to herself and the twins has passed, the results of the DNA phenotyping of Ash's murderer arrive in Janet's inbox. She immediately recognises the suspect and it's not the person who's safely in custody. A dramatic finale ensues, during which Janet confronts Ash's killer and has to fight to save the lives of her children.
