Episode 1

Jane Eyre, an orphaned girl, is sent to Lowood School by her uncaring aunt Mrs Reed, who no longer wants the child in her house where Jane was ill-treated by cousins and aunt. Jane remains at Lowood School until the age of 19 and eventually becomes a governess. She receives a position at Thornfield Hall as a governess for Adele, a French girl in the care of Edward Rochester, the master of Thornfield Hall. From the housekeeper Jane learns that the master of the house is rarely at home. One day, she finally meets Rochester on one of his returns to Thornfield. For the first time, Jane feels as if she belongs somewhere and soon begins to love Thornfield. But this is challenged when Jane one day wakes to strange noises in the house. When she follows the sounds she discovers a fire in Rochester's room.

Episode 2

Jane is able to rescue Rochester from the fire but starts asking questions who set the fire and from whom these strange sounds from the North Tower come from. She is left to believe that Grace Poole is responsible for the fire and does not understand why Grace Poole is not thrown out. Rochester unexpectedly leaves Thornfield the next morning and when he returns he is accompanied by a large party. One of them being the beautiful Blanche Ingram. A mysterious guest visits Rochester. When loud screams awaken the entire house, Jane is asked for assistance in taking care of the mysterious guest Mason, who is badly injured and lies in the North Tower, while Rochester calls for a doctor. Loud noises from the other side of the door in the North Tower keep unsettling Jane and she once again wonders who or what stays in there.

Episode 3

Jane is told by Bessie that her Aunt Mrs Reed is on the verge of dying and requesting Jane to come to the unloved Gateshead Hall. On her dying bed, Mrs Reed informs her of a secret that Jane, contrary to her believe, has one uncle who wanted to take care of her. But Mrs Reed's cruelty in keeping this information to herself all these years left Jane in the cold Lowood School as a child. Despite her aunt's cruelty and believe Jane forgives her and returns to Thornfield. On her return to Thornfield Hall, which she has become to love as a home, she hears of the rumours that Rochester is to marry Blanche Ingram. Rochester presses and teases Jane in telling her that she has to leave Thornfield eventually due to the upcoming marriage. Finally, Jane tells Rochester of her feelings which, as she learns, are shared by Rochester as well. He proposes to Jane and is accepted. Two days before the marriage Jane wakes from a nightmare and sees the shadow of a woman in her room. Rochester tries to convince Jane that the woman was also part of her dream, but Jane's ruined wedding dress contradicts the idea. On the wedding day, Jane learns of Rochester's past. He is already married, his mad wife Bertha lives in the North Tower of Thornfield Hall and Jane leaves Thornfield.

Episode 4

Alone and without any money, Jane gives up and lies down on the moors. She is however rescued just in time by St John Rivers, a clergyman. He takes her to his home and with his two sisters, Mary and Diana, takes care of Jane. When she is restored to health, it becomes evident that Jane has no memories of the past. The truth is finally revealed by St John Rivers, who was able to find out that Jane Eyre is an heiress to some money left by her uncle. She also learns that the Rivers are related to her. St John proposes to Jane in order to lead a live as a missionary couple abroad. Jane however is torn between decisions. When she hears Rochester calling her name, she realizes that she has to return to Thornfield and to Rochester. Shocking things are awaiting her at Thornfield, the house is almost burned down and Rochester, in an attempt to rescue his wife, is left blinded and his wife dead.
