Jamestown's first baby is born to Alice and Silas, delivered by slave Maria, who longs to escape and find her own children. Samuel is found dead, rendering Jocelyn and Mercy homeless until Verity takes them in. Yeardley is impressed by an intelligent slave Pedro but the brutal Massinger refuses to sell Pedro to him. Meanwhile a traitor is suspected of informing the Spanish that the English have stolen their slaves. Samuel's death was no accident but Meredith is afraid to tell anybody but Verity and Jocelyn proposes a deal with Yeardley for the return of her home.

Yeardley lets Jocelyn keep her home after she tells him whom she suspects to be the spy and Alice is worried it is Silas, though he assures her he was secretly meeting Chacrow and refusing to give him details of the settlers' plans. Christopher believes Jocelyn framed Samuel though both agree he was murdered and Jocelyn, aware of her husband's regard for Pedro, tricks Massinger into selling him to Yeardley as Pedro wished. Meredith's plan to sell items bought from thieving sailors puts Verity in danger and she is saved by Silas, an event which also allows Farlow to claim that he has found the spy. Jocelyn, meanwhile, embarks on an unlikely liaison with blacksmith James Read.

The natives feel Silas has betrayed them and Chacra confronts Alice with the fact. Some time later her baby goes missing and Yeardley leads a group of armed men to the Pamunkey village to reclaim him. However Temperance discovers what really happened and the child is found in Jamestown. Jocelyn names Farlow as the spy, as he has conveniently gone to Bermuda, but Yeardley still suspects Christopher, to whom Meredith reveals a secret regarding Samuel's death. Elsewhere Jocelyn is annoyed to learn that James has a wife coming to him from England.

Chacrow marries his sister Winganuske to Henry to form an alliance but Yeardley is using it as a chance to gain power over the natives and Chacrow foils him when Silas explains the plan to him. James wears a fine doublet given him by the Rutters from their hidden booty to meet his wife but she has died at sea. In his grief he refuses to take it off and is whipped for having supposedly stolen it whilst Massinger forces the Rutters to give him their remaining spoils. Yeardley still suspects Christopher as the spy and sends Jocelyn to him at night but Mercy and James have seen her.

Secretary Farlow returns to the colony with an alchemist, who tries to convince the governor that lead can be transformed into gold thanks to some ingredients provided by the doctor and the Sharrows. The latter drive a hard bargain when providing the goods. The sheriff warns the people against the sin of buggery. Mrs Castrel makes an important confession to the doctor while dashing the hopes of the blacksmith still infatuated with her. Someone tries to frame Maria for theft. A letter from England brings bad news for the Sharrows.

Believing Yeardley cheated them the Sharrows lead a march on the governor's house but he diverts them with news of an imminent Spanish invasion and a solar eclipse which blinds Massinger is taken as a portent of doom. As the men keep a night watch for the Spanish ships, a spectral figure is seen and thought to be Samuel, risen from the grave to name his killer. The Sharrows believe it was Massinger, whom Samuel caught arranging for their cargo to be stolen, and convince Yeardley. As a result Massinger is duly punished but Christopher is suspicious of Jocelyn.
Episode 7

With Massinger dead Yeardley gives the Sharrows his slaves in lieu of their stolen goods. He expects Pedro to breed with Maria but Temperance gives Maria cause to stab Pedro and she flees, hiding first with Alice - to Silas's disapproval - and then with Verity. Yeardley gets the Sharrows to hunt her down and she is captured and branded. Jocelyn makes a secret pact with Farlow to take over Massinger's land but Yeardley is displeased with her refusal to marry Christopher and she turns to James for comfort.
Episode 8

Whilst the Rutters compromise Redwick into giving them trading rights Jocelyn tells Yeardley she discovered that Massinger obtained his land illegally and forces him to grant it to her. He determines to obtain more territory from the Pamunkey by setting fire to her crops and letting them take the blame but Maria overhears him plotting and tells Alice, who warns Chacrow. The arson still goes ahead and the Sharrows are blamed for their friendship with the natives, forcing Silas to flee to the Pamunkey.
