6 Episodes 2018 - 2018
Episode 1
The bluebird of happiness has stopped warbling and Jack's life has hit a new low. His body broken from too many beatings, Linda has left him, the racing world is in turmoil, his local - the Prince of Prussia - may never be the same again, and Jack has returned to the law in the form of mundane conveyancing. That is, until he learns of foreign students at a disreputable private college dying in bizarre circumstances. After Eddie, a Chinese courier who was supposed to deliver a package for Jack three years ago, shows up dead, Jack can't help but get involved. Following the trail of Eddie's last movements, Jack discovers Eddie's friend, an Indian student named Lakshmi, committed suicide shortly before Eddie disappeared. They studied together at a private college where the facilities and level of education leave much to be desired. Digging deeper, Jack encounters the psychiatrist Lakshmi saw before her tragic death, Dr Rory Finch. As they both work to discover the truth behind the two deaths, a relationship brews between Jack and Rory. Jack's investigation unfolds an intricate web of lies leading all the way to India and back again, where he enlists Linda's help, still working overseas as a journalist and living with Orton. But every step Jack takes towards the truth threatens his world and his friends - from Harry and Cam in the racing game, to cabinetmaker Charlie Taub's granddaughter, Gus, to the Prince of Prussia run by Stan and his regular clientele, the Fitzroy Youth Club. Jack must keep his wits about him, or this quest for the truth may be his last.
Episode 2
Looking into Eddie's calendar, Jack discovers that Lakshmi was seeing a psychiatrist, Dr Rory Finch. She and Jack have instant chemistry, but she refuses to tell him anything that may break doctor/patient confidentiality and Jack notes a wedding ring on her finger. Rory looks into the details of Lakshmi's autopsy and finds out the body was shipped back to India. When Jack discovers that Lakshmi's father, Ajeet, is in Melbourne to find out what happened to his daughter's remains, he realises Lakshmi's body never made it home to India. As he considers this, Jack springs a burglar in his courtyard, only to realise that it's Charlie Taub's granddaughter, Gus. Suspecting that she may be struggling, Jack tells her she's welcome to stay any time, an offer met with derision from the damaged teenager. Jack receives a cryptic message that tells him to meet at a restaurant later that day. Cautious, Jack enlists the help of hapless hitman, Brendan O'Grady, as back up. When Jack shows up at the restaurant, Brendan isn't there and Jack is joined by a man who has clearly been sleeping rough. He refuses to tell Jack anything until he's sure that Jack isn't working for 'them' - but before he can tell Jack anything, he's shot in the back of the head by an unseen drive-by gunman. Homicide detective Barry Tregear attends the crime scene and informs Jack that the murder victim is off the grid; a man with no known identity. With Harry's wife having lost all their money in a bad investment deal, Harry is elated to return to the track to win it back. He and Cam are eager to make their mark on the first race but when the favourite is disqualified after testing positive in a random drug test Harry is immediately suspicious. Cherry Blossom battles with the Fitzroy Youth Club against the changes she's making, but Stan is left horrified after Immigration show up and deport Cherry back to China, claiming their marriage is a sham. Jack visits Meritus' migration agent, Denis Bontempelli, who admits that a group of students were deported the day after Lakshmi died. One of them who escaped Immigration - Javed Nazeem - has recently been arrested and placed in detention after an attempted terrorist attack at a corporate building in Doncaster. But, to Jack's surprise, Eddie Chin wasn't on the list of those to be deported. Jack pokes around at Immigration, but they give him nothing. On his way home, he's grabbed in the street, shoved in the boot of a car and abandoned in the middle of nowhere. A clear warning. Meanwhile, in detention, Javed Nazeem is in a near catatonic state. The guard lets in a visitor to see him - Dr Rory Finch.
Episode 3
Jack meets up with Rory, who admits that she and her husband are staying together for the sake of their children, but their marriage is over. With trepidation, Jack calls Linda in Manila and offers the story of mistreated international students but Linda isn't interested. Orton promptly changes the subject by proposing to her. After some help from Denis Bontempelli, Jack gets in to see Javed in detention, but a traumatised Javed speaks only in Urdu. As Jack signs out, he notices that Javed had another visitor - Rory. Jack confronts Rory, who reminds him that she has a duty to her patients, first and foremost. Jack doesn't want to see her anymore. Harry, Cam and Jack attend the races and begin to see a pattern - horses finishing first, second, or third are being disqualified after the fact, bumping other horses up into a place finish. Harry asks around and a mystery woman has been sighted in each instance. Cam tracks the woman down and discover her true identity - Ricky Kirsch. Stan struggles without Cherry Blossom while the Youth Club are happy to have the menu restored to the old classics. To Jack's surprise, Gus comfortably fits in with the old men at the Prince of Prussia. Jack discovers that the unknown man who was shot in front of him at the restaurant had a list of names - that includes Lakshmi and Javed. Simone looks into it and finds out that the crest on the back of the list is from the Science Faculty at Melbourne University. Turns out the man Jack met was a scientist called Martin Reed, who was awarded a scholarship from the Next Horizon Foundation. Ajeet reveals to Jack that Meritus has managed to track down Lakshmi's ashes, but Ajeet doesn't trust Anoushka. Jack has the ashes tested and Ajeet is furious to discover that the ashes are not human. After Ajeet confronts Anoushka, he and Jack narrowly escape two thugs and Jack sends Ajeet home to the safety of India, promising not to give up the search for his daughter. Linda calls Jack, bored with her current assignment and agrees to investigate further on his behalf in India. That night, an apologetic Rory pays Jack a visit and they kiss - the start of something new.
Episode 4
Secrets are revealed as Jack's investigation stretches to the colourful streets of Mumbai.

Episode 5
Suspecting Rory is involved in the deaths of Eddie and Lakshmi due to her connection to Phillip, Jack refuses to talk to her. Rory snoops in Phillip's computer and is surprised to find records of Jack's phone calls - but she doesn't want to know the truth when Phillip offers to give it to her. Jack confronts Anoushka about the students who were deported and died after returning to India. She dodges his questions and when Jack returns with Barry, Meritus has been hastily shut down with Anoushka fleeing the country to escape arrest. Simone does some research into the postmark on the letter in Martin's van from 'K'. She and Jack figure out that it's Kendra Raspovic, Martin's grant research assistant, and the letter was posted from a country town named Dargo. When Jack arrives at the address, he finds nothing but a recently destroyed hut and no sign of anyone else. With Cynthia's help, Harry realises that the race Ricky is targeting is the one named after him on his retirement from racing - The Harry Strang Stakes. With no other leads, Jack follows up on the building in Doncaster that Javed attacked. He discovers that it's a Contract Research Organisation (CRO) called Delatech, a company that conducts clinical trial research for pharmaceutical companies. Jack realises that Martin's list is a group of students who took part in a clinical trial. With Cam and Simone's help, Jack breaks into the building and finds the information he needs about the trial. Gus is at Jack's house when she gets kidnapped. Jack can't get back in time to help her and when he receives a cryptic text message, he realises where Gus has been taken. Rory suspects Phillip may have had something to do with Gus' kidnap and asks him to tell her the truth. Jack races to the mine shaft where he found Eddie's dead body and finds Gus - alive. As Jack recovers from his shock, he realises that he missed something when he was at the bush hut in Dargo. He travels back and discovers a wild-eyed, disturbed Kendra, clutching a rifle. Jack tries to talk her down, but too late - she turns the rifle on herself and pulls the trigger.
