As a publicity-stunt spoof, Garry asks the very pregnant Jackie to give birth live on his show. As he impatiently awaits for her to finally go into labor, his friends, rock musician Tom Petty and actress Susan Anton, arrive to keep him and the expectant family company. To kill time, Garry is forced to improvise and awkwardly interview them. Tom also performs live the acoustic version of his 1981 hit song 'The Waiting' in honor of the occasion, and Garry promotes Tom's new album 'Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)' in return. Grant also pops in dressed as Tevye from the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' to perform the famous "If I Were a Rich Man" song from it, while Garry promotes Grant's school play in return. Finally, as the only "Doc" in the house, surprise special guest Doc Severinsen, the jazz trumpeter who led the band for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, arrives to help with the birth.

Ailing comedienne Gilda Radner visits Garry together with her male nurse. Garry's neighbor, Leonard, recognizes him as one of his Vietnam war buddies whom he abandoned during a fight. Garry tries to help him literally face his past.
