Episode 1

Whilst Hathaway visits his father, who suffers from dementia, in a home Lewis is called in when a three year old corpse is fished from a well. Then artist Talika Desai is found murdered and her necklace missing. Her agent Sean Wilkinson is a suspect after young student Ollie Tedman saw the pair argue but Ollie's father Ian, Talika's old tutor, was also giving her money. Hathaway identifies the corpse in the well as Indrek, an Eastern European immigrant but it is Lewis who inadvertently sees the man's murder on video.

Episode 2

Hathaway discovers that Talika's whole installation was based around the murder of Indrek whilst Bryony Willet, who runs the hostel where Indrek stayed, is charged with drug-dealing, along with Ollie Tedman but then Bryony is poisoned, non-fatally, in the same way as Talika. Taxidermist Jasper Hammond, over whose shop Talika organized her installation, clears up the mystery of the missing necklace but a sinister experiment by one of the suspects exposes the double murderer and ultimately Hathaway reconnects with his father on a fishing trip.

Episode 3

Lewis and Hathaway are called to investigate a body in some woodland. But realising three more murders are to follow, the team must hurry to catch the killer, before they happen. Hathaway is struggling to cope with his father's illness, as he begins his search to find out who he was before the dementia kicked in.

Episode 4

As Jay Fennell becomes the third victim, with the same alchemic inscription beside his body Hathaway works out that the victims have all performed the same esoteric quasi-Christian ritual, which is supposed to bring forgiveness. However the key to the mystery is provided by a road death, ruled as accidental, from eight years earlier. At the same time Hathaway achieves a kind of closure with his father.

Episode 5

Maths professor Adam Capstone is killed by a parcel bomb. Whilst his brother David, with whom he fell out over money, points the police to threatening letters Adam received his wife Elizabeth admits that he was a philanderer and Frank Guitteau claims that Adam raped his student daughter Paula, who committed suicide after he was acquitted. Sarah Alderwood, carer for Elizabeth's invalid father Donald had a child by Adam and student Kate McMurdock accused him of plagiarizing her work. All are suspects. Then David receives a parcel bomb and Lewis and Hathaway are with him when it explodes.

Episode 6

Nobody is killed in the explosion but Lewis notes that Kate's boyfriend Djimon was outside the building at the time and Lewis wonders if David, not Adam, was the original intended victim as, despite his denial, he knew Paula well. David's colleague Andrew Dimmock admits that the pair of them scammed casinos together before he too is killed. A case of stolen identity clears one suspect while Lewis and Hathaway separately work out who is the murderer and Lewis can fly off to New Zealand with Dr Hobson.
