2 Episodes 2011 - 2011
Episode 1
89 mins
After missing teenager Mary Claverton is found murdered her parents tell Gently they believe she was about to run off with an older boyfriend. Married music teacher Mr Nugent is mentioned but he has an alibi for the murder. Mary and her school-friends were regular audience members at 'Upside Down', a local pop music TV show, hosted by the oily Tony, who also briefly met Mary when he tried to hit on her and was rejected. Another suspect is headmaster Peter Holdaway, father of Mary's best friend, who had an affair with another, literary-minded, school-girl years earlier and fathered a child. One of the suspects makes a confession but Gently believes that this is to protect the real killer.

Episode 2
88 mins
Gently learns that his old informant China Mates has died, after an apparently accidental fall in the nearby town of Wellaby. He suspects foul play when a nurse contradicts the coroner's report and it transpires that her husband, Sergeant Tommy Molloy, took China to hospital and not an ambulance. Gently visits his colleague, Superintendent Alan Shepherd, whose autistic son Danny was robbed by the thieving teenage Blackburn brothers, one of whom has recently disappeared and the other is discovered a gibbering wreck. Gently initially believes that Molloy killed China and blamed the young thugs though ultimately a different cover-up is exposed, which tests Gently's loyalty and earns him the derision of Bacchus.
