Wes Connelly is comfortable at his high school with his best friends Izzy and Miles. However, on the last day of school when Izzy tells Wes that his divorced parents are at school meeting with the principal, Wes knows there is trouble ahead. Wes makes it into the principal's office as she finishes telling Wes's parents that he's been offered a scholarship to the prestigious All Boys Springdale Academy.

Wes and his parents argue about his new opportunity. Wes wants to finish high school with his friends and his parents are adamant he takes advantage of the scholarship. Wes storms out and goes to Izzy and Miles who lament his impending departure with him. It's revealed that another reason Wes doesn't want to change schools is because his ex best friend Anthony goes to school there. Helen and Ray continue to discuss Wes after he storms out. They share a moment of getting along and despite Ray's efforts at peace, Helen gets a dig in on him that sends him out the door where he bumps into Wes. Wes is now resigned to his fate and calm. His father has a conversation expressing Helen's concerns but Wes says he's fine. They almost have a genuine moment of affection, but Ray leaves instead. Wes apologizes to his mother and then retreats to his room. Izzy's words replay about "you know who" in his head. He pulls out his little black book and begins to dial Anthony's number.

The Secrets We Keep

As summer progresses, Wes, Izzy and Miles hang out at the shore, play ping pong, mini golf and other assorted experiences, all while Miles and Izzy begin to develop feeling for each other. Izzy asks Wes if he's excited about his new school and Wes finally tells Miles what happened between him and Anthony. Wes hangs out with popular girl Dana, who spends her time complaining about her boyfriend to Wes. Wes seemingly reveals his feelings for her. Miles doesn't like keeping things from Wes, but goes along with it figuring Izzy knows Wes better.

Watch What You Wish For

Dana catches Wes off guard at the end of their night. Wes returns home and avoids his mother's prying by heading to his room. Wes writes then receives an interesting message before heading to bed. Wes starts at Springdale and doesn't have a good first day. He's treated like the new kid and practically ignored. He and Anthony come face to face and argue after the day is over. Wes returns home pissed off and receives an even more shocking message.

Take the Way Home...

Wes heads to Izzy's where he finds a flustered Izzy and Miles. The three talk and Wes fills everyone in on what happened during his first day and Miles asks what happened with Dana on their date. Anthony does his homework and then notices the time. Instead of heading to Dana's, Wes instead retreats to the green, where he is joined by a familiar face.

Wes's mother reads an essay called "Abandoned" in one of his notebooks and grows concerned. Anthony shares his perspective on their former friendship. Miles arrives home to a family he doesn't fit in with. Izzy copes with her feelings. Wes comes home and is confronted by his upset mother who tells him she knows what happened.

Helen tells Wes that she read Abandoned. Wes blows up at his mother for going through his things. Later, Wes feels the walls closing in on him as Dana leaves him a message asking where he is and sounds annoyed. The change in school, dealing with Dana, his mother going through his stuff and his feelings for Anthony cause him to have a panic attack. Helen calls Ray and tells him what she read in Wes's notebook. Wes receives good news at school. Miles overhears someone asking Izzy on a date. Wes, feeling good about himself, bumps into Anthony who asks if Wes wants to hang out over the weekend.

Ghosts of the Past

Helen and Ray get along well discussing their son. Wes and Anthony spend time reconnecting and it goes well. Wes returns home in a good mood. Anthony's dad offers some advice about Wes. Wes is greeted by a figure from his past that is now filling in for one of his teachers at Springdale.
