La Couchette

A night train crosses France with mixed group of passengers in couchette number nine. Loutish drunk Jorg noisily annoys uptight professor Maxwell before bickering marrieds Kath and Les Cook arrive, to be joined by sweaty Australian back-packer Shona with free-loading lay Hugo in tow. As they are about to have sex a body tumbles from the top bunk but, for various reasons, some passengers are reluctant to immediately report the death. When the train arrives at its stop the motive of one of them becomes clear.

The 12 Days of Christine

On New Year's Eve a drunken Christine tumbles into her flat with handsome party pick-up Adam. They begin dating and eventually marry, having a son Jack, but Christine is repeatedly troubled by disturbing thoughts and images. After a few years she and Adam divorce but she still keeps seeing figures from the past, which puzzles her. Eventually all the images come together to make sense though they do not necessarily make for a happy ending.

The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge

In the mid seventeenth century professional witch-finders Warren and Clarke arrive at the village of Little Happens to preside over the trial of Elizabeth Gadge. She is accused of consorting with the devil by her daughter and son-in-law but claims that they want her cottage and has logical explanations for their accusations. Fanatical Warren wants a quick guilty verdict and the subsequent fee but the kindlier Clarke is beginning to doubt the integrity of their calling and may be able to save Elizabeth whom he see as the victim of covetous perjurers. Events will show which of them is right.

Cold Comfort

Andy starts as a volunteer at the Samaritans-like Comfort Support Line in booth number 9 and soon becomes aware of the antagonism between fellow workers Liz and Joanne. Liz is moved on for taking private phone calls but it is Andy who clearly lacks the sensitivity to do the job well - a fact that one of his callers seems to have found out, leading to sinister repercussions.

Fastidious Angela prepares for her mother's seventy-ninth birthday party, at which Angela's alcoholic sister Carol will be present, along with Angela's prankster husband Jim and Carol's equally childish other half Pat. Jim has devised a stunt by which he wants Angela to hide under a false cake to surprise Pat but is then surprised himself when it seems as if Angela has overheard Carol's drunken overtures to him and things do not end well for him. Nana, on the other hand, has a lovely day, complete with male stripper.

Seance Time

When Tina visits blind medium Madam Talbot things get very frightening - until it turns out that the supposed séance is actually part of a hidden camera prank television show. Tina is impressed but Pete, the next visitor, is more cynical and his actions require police intervention. Meanwhile Madam Talbot's assistant Hives has reason to fear a genuine supernatural encounter.
