Teenage twins Sam and Ben Hazelton are abruptly uprooted from their normal, Australian, suburban existence and despatched to Germany for four months to live with some relatives they've only vaguely heard about. To their great surprise, they discover that their hosts are an eccentric family of faded aristocrats who live in an ancient castle in a remote, rural region. It's soon apparent that mayhem and chaos are the order of the day and that only one rule is likely to apply during their stay - always expect the unexpected.

It's quickly apparent to Sam and Ben that although their hosts are aristocrats living in a magnificent castle, money is always in short supply. Castles aren't exactly cheap things to run and it's clear that their uncle Philipp, the Baron who owns the pile, is under severe financial stress. Things aren't helped by the arrival of a new local bank manager, who Philipp knows he must impress if he is to secure a much needed loan, nor by the news that a fraudster is on the prowl and is likely to be targeting the castle's small but valuable collection of relics. It doesn't take long for things to begin to unravel as a case of mistaken identity causes Philipp to wish he'd not bothered to get out of bed that morning.

The annual meeting of Hasenburg's is about to take place: an appointment that Philipp and Lili would like to strike from their calendar. Their relatives, Uncle Herrmann and his wife Kiki never miss an opportunity to make life difficult for both of them. This year, they are trying a nasty trick to prevent the signing of the annual report, so they can drive Philipp and Lili out of the castle. Only with the detective senses of Marcus, Sam, Ben and Sophie the catastrophe can be prevented.

Ben tries to spend as much time as possible with Sophie. He persuades her to let him accompany her as she goes to interview the only survivor of one of the city's oldest families, Ms. Schöller, for a history project. To impress Sophie, he also offers to help the old woman remove a bird's nest from the roof. But Ben not only naturally attracts every misfortune, he also has two left hands. He falls from the ladder, fortunately unnoticed by Sophie and Mrs. Schöller. However, he falls on a statue in the garden. He is frantic and rushes back to the castle to persuade Marcus to help him with the repair. But Marcus is busy dating Sam.

Sam uses one of the many empty rooms in the castle to sing a song for Lucy and Jack. She does not suspect that she happens to be filmed. Markus had a camera installed for one of Lilis promo projects. He is thrilled when he has Sam's performance on the tape. To surprise her, he cuts a music video out of it and places it on the internet. But he has no clue that Sam's bandmates Jack and Lucy are furious upon the launch. Sam is also pissed off. But Markus wouldn't be Markus if he wouldn't come up with a solution to the problem he caused.

Ben is happy: he found new friends in school with whom he can hang just as cool as with his friends in Australia. Finally, everything becomes a little more normal for him. To show his new friends Eric, Mike and Peter that they can count on him, he agrees to dress up the old statue in the market square with donkey ears at night to cause a scene at the upcoming city festival. What his new friend's wouldn't tell him: it is the statue of an ancestor of Baron Philipp and Lili. When Ben realizes that he has been tricked, he confesses to the whole story at the castle. Philipp and Lili are greeted at the city festival with mocking and laughter. But who laughs last laughs best.

Lili wants to surprise her parents with a romantic dinner in the forest on the wedding day and Ben should help her find an idyllic spot. But as always, when Ben is involved, the chaos is not far away: first he persuades Sophie to accompany him and Sam to represent Sophie in the café. The suddenly unexpectedly has a whole busload of tourists to serve and is totally overwhelmed. Then she also has to overhear Lili ask Markus to stay away from her, Sam, and is completely depressed. Meanwhile, Sophie sprains her foot in the woods, and Ben, who is anything but a connoisseur of nature, runs away. Errwege everywhere.

The castle dwellers have no choice but to kill two birds with one stone: Sam must sing for the bride and groom.
