During the 10 years In the Life has chronicled the growth and evolution of gay and lesbian America, the progress we have made in the workplace has represented one of our community's greatest achievements - one that has largely been won by the thousands who integrate their identities into their professional lives. These everyday heroes clear the way for other gays and lesbians to come out. In honor of the progress our community has made on the job, of those who helped achieve it, and of those who are still fighting for their right to work, In the Life is pleased to present our 10th Anniversary retrospective of gays in the workplace. We find out who's taking a stand when it comes to this serious case of scapegoating. Also, once again, we'll salute Father Mychal Judge, a gay priest whose heroics became world-renowned on September 11. In "Real to Reel," filmmaker and minister, Macky Alston embarks on a spiritual journey in his new film, "Questioning Faith: Confessions of a Seminarian." L.A. Edition

Sun, Sep 1, 2002

Mark Christopher, writer/director of "54" and "Alkali, Iowa" hosts our special edition of "In the Life" in the City of Angels. On this special edition, we explore the stories, people, and programs making a difference in Los Angeles-and the world. With its rich history and cultural diversity, Tinseltown's gay population, like Alan Ball, is flourishing. As early as the 1950's, gay Angelenos began forging their own communities, creating new forums to speak out, and helping foster the gay and lesbian movement across the country. Our feature stories include: The 2001 grand opening of the One Institute & Archives, which took its name after the gay magazine of the fifties and sixties, an American Beauty journeys to Tinseltown, fighting fires, fighting intolerance, fighting for safe schools, and Harvey Fierstein sets the record "straight" on who's gay in Hollywood.
