When Abigail's body is found there is evidence that she had been in Stephen's car and that he watched child porn. Though not officially on the case Helen is keen to support Linda. Searching the woods where Abigail was found Helen surprises taxi driver Gavin Sweeney, boyfriend of another school-mate Paula whilst ex-cop turned pub owner Trevor Hare is convinced of Stephen's innocence. The possibility that her unborn child's father may be Adam Perrin, a colleague with whom she had a brief fling, adds to Helen's concerns. There is some good news though when pathologist Phil Hendricks arrives from Manchester with new theories about Abigail's murder, giving a possible lead that implicates Gavin Sweeney, though it proves to be a dead end. Then teenager Aurora "Rory" Harcross comes forward to give Stephen an alibi for the murder. This also gives Helen unpleasant memories from the past when she and Linda were sexually abused by Rory's grandfather and leads her to admit her affair with Adam to Paul. From her talk with Rory, Helen works out who abducted the two girls and is able to save Poppy and unmask the killer. However, her private life is now less easily resolved.

Helen is approached by Sherwood, who tells her Paul's death was caused by someone "younger and blacker", leading her to suspect that it was concerned with the turf wars responsible for the drive-by shootings. She makes enquiries among local youths, including Theo, on the run after his other gang members are shot dead. Following a break-in at her flat she learns that Paul was working undercover to unmask corrupt officers passing information to mobsters whilst new evidence links Sarah to Paul's death though she is too scared to admit who blackmailed her into taking part. A further tip-off identifies the man who put Sarah up to it, using gang members as cover. Now Helen must seek Theo's help in more ways than one.
