Murphy Mason is an irreverent, attractive, but cynical blind woman living in downtown Chicago who drifts through life in a drunken haze of self-hate due to losing her eyesight at a young age. She is friends with Jess, her tolerant roommate, and Tyson, a teenage drug-dealer who saved her from a violent mugging. Out for a walk with her guide dog, Pretzel, she stumbles upon a corpse that might be Tyson's, but the body disappears before the police arrive. When they do not seem inclined to investigate, Murphy clings onto the only thing that can keep her together: figuring out what happened to her friend and resolves to solve the murder herself, while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at "Breaking Blind", a school for guide dogs owned by her overprotective adopted mixed race parents, Hank and Joy.

Murphy, unable to file a missing persons report for Tyson, decides to contact his mother. She also learns that, due to unpaid medical bills, her doctor is unwilling to treat her urinary track infection as a result of STD's. While visiting Dean for an update on the missing Tyson's cell phone, Murphy tells Chloe that her father should consider dating. Meanwhile, Jess becomes concerned that Vanessa doesn't love her. Also, Joy and Hank organize a "barkery" event to raise money for the school, which Joy expects her daughter to attend. Murphy goes to Darnell for the address, but he refuses to tell her. Instead, she goes on a one-hour date with Max, one of his associates, for the information.
