In Bristol depressed divorcee Joel sits on a high rise ledge throwing monies from his wealthy ex-wife's two million settlement to the crowd before being rescued by old school friends New Age Charlie and wannabe authoress Tess. They arrange an unsuccessful blind date for him with Nadia, an American oncologist, struck off for performing operations under the influence of drink and drugs but Joel is more shocked to learn that Charlie has cancer and is relying solely on homeopathic remedies. He persuades Tess to abduct Charlie and with help from Nadia, paid out of Charlie's windfall, they take him to a secluded country house to forcibly administer proper medical treatment. Charlie however is unappreciative of their efforts, especially when his wife Kira appears on television, reporting him as missing.

After Tess has foiled Charlie's bid to summon help she persuades Joel that he must do something to allay Kira's anxiety so he tells Kira that Charlie is in the Outer Hebrides with Tess, helping her write her book but police officer Talbot is not convinced. After Nadia has taken a sperm sample from Charlie to preserve for posterity she begins to be won over by his account of how he too was dependent on drink and drugs and overcame his addictions and the pair become too close for Joel's liking. Worse is to come for Joel when he discovered that Nadia has helped Charlie to escape and he and Tess go in pursuit, armed with a cross-bow - which has unfortunate results.

Saved by Nadia, who promptly drives off, Charlie is returned to his prison and put in a cage. Joel continues to pay reassuring visits to Kira, who is suspicious of the fake texts Tess is sending, allegedly from Charlie, and informs Talbot, making Joel very paranoid. Nadia joins an addictions therapy group with Kira, coincidentally her counsellor and with their sessions leaving her sorry for Kira Nadia returns to the house with the last dose necessary to completely cure Charlie of his cancer. However the police are in pursuit, along with Kira, arrests are made and it is down to Charlie to decide all their fates.
