Since being promoted in his Brighton bank Murray has become a workaholic and wife Bex feels neglected. To make atonement he organizes a surprise fortieth birthday party for her but, fearing further disappointment, she leaves him to move in with her friend Abby - who breaks the news to Murray. So he plans to cancel the party but it is too late as all the guests, including in-laws Paula and Don, arrive. When Bex turns up to collect her things the couple feign unity, which is complicated when Don and Paula present them with a romantic holiday - to be taken immediately.

Bex and Murray arrive at the airport but she dumps him and drives off to stay with the fastidious Abby and her man-hating book club members. Murray wakes to find his work colleague Grant using the house to sleep with his girlfriend but his attempts to persuade Don that he is in Turkey unravel when Bex runs into Paula and the truth comes out. Don takes it very badly and, with Paula visiting her sister, Murray finds himself playing host to his father-in-law and needing Bex's help when his guest gets extremely drunk and passes out.

Murray tries to get back into Bex's good books by selling tickets for her charity auction but his colleagues are not overly generous so, as a grand gesture, he claims that he can get Joanna Lumley to turn up for the evening offering dinner with her as the prize. Unfortunately she is not able to make it so Bex stands in a last minute replacement and Murray is not happy when smooth business executive Julian Wolverton puts in the winning bid, kissing Bex in public. Furthermore a memory stick with important information has gone missing.

In an effort to win back Bex Murray takes her to the Italian restaurant where he first proposed but is perturbed to find Julian Wolverton there, as well as a married colleague waiting for a blind date. Other complications follow, including a fight with Julian, and the evening is a disaster, not helped by the fact that Bex has a job offer in Birmingham.

Bex moves in with her sister after arguing with Abby and Murray quits his job, hoping to impress her. Following a night out he ends up in bed with work colleague Emma and is mistaken for her boyfriend by her father, who is the same age as Murray, though he is also called upon to lie for the office's cheating couple. Having persuaded Bex that his night with Emma was innocent Murray almost blows things when he loses their dog but this leads him into a reconciliation of sorts with Bex after a successful search for the pet.

With Bex about to leave for Birmingham Murray is determined to stop her and intends to make an impassioned plea at Don and Paula's anniversary party but in the mean time finds a positive pregnancy test in her room at her sister's flat and gets the wrong idea. Predictably he airs his faux pas at the party but trusts that his devotion and sincerity will be enough to win his wife back.
