We're Audit Again

Fri, Aug 7, 201521 mins

Tony Rossi, recently promoted to Global Head of Sales from the TC Toronto office, arrives for his first day of work at the TerraCycle's Global Headquarters in Trenton. He checks out his new desk and tries to make small talk with some of the TerraCycle staff. First days are always hard, and Tony wonders how he'll fit into his new surroundings. In the year since the launch of the Zero Waste program, sales have continued to climb. During a routine meeting with Tom, Dan and Rhandi update him on their ongoing successes with large businesses, but also their difficulties selling Zero Waste to medium-sized businesses. Tom suggests that Dan and Rhandi find a way to emphasize the marketing potential of the program, and they decide to try a "waste audit" as a potential solution for their sales problem. Rhandi and Dan meet with potential client Century Packaging, where they tour the facility and identify the most common waste streams. Back at the office, while trying to make friendly conversation with Stephen, Darshan, Rick, and Sara, Tony asks to join an upcoming trivia night. The group agrees to let him join. Dan heads to the lab with Mylar he found during the audit. After running some initial tests to make sure they has a recycling solution for it, Rick informs Dan that the material is recyclable and they can start collecting the material through Zero Waste. A few days later, Dan checks in with Century Packaging and successfully makes a sale. Dan's thrilled that the waste audit has proved to be a great way to reach more businesses. Later that night, the TC team, competes in a local Trivia night. After some ups and downs, with some critical help from Tony, the team comes in second place. Everyone is happy to welcome Tony as a permanent member of the trivia team. The first Zero Waste boxes with Mylar waste come in from Century Packaging. Dan heads to Design where he shows Tiff the new material, sparking her excitement about the upcycling potential of this new waste stream.

World on a String

Fri, Aug 14, 201521 mins

Stephen checks in on Rick and Ernie in the lab, where they're testing a new waste stream. He's curious what they're working on, but when he finds out what it is - tampons - he quickly leaves. At a team meeting, Tom dispels the latest rumors by revealing his new passion project: he wants to solve tampon recycling! The team is not thrilled about the idea of a tampon program, but Tom's determined to see it become a reality, and he puts a reluctant Tony in charge of selling the program to feminine hygiene brands. During Lunch, Dean heads back from the lunchroom to eat alone at his desk, a routine that's familiar since his closest office friend, Dara, went on maternity leave. Tony, Tiff and Darshan brainstorm a personal collection device for the tampon recycling program. Tony has decided to set up a pilot program in the office as a first step to prove that women are willing to recycle tampons. At lunch, done with eating alone, Dean seeks out new lunch companions, but has trouble finding the right group for him. Tony pitches the pilot program to the women in the office. At first they're unsure about the idea of collecting their used tampons, but after a convincing pitch the ladies decide to help Tony out. After reviewing the feedback from the tampon pilot, Tony and Darshan discuss a re-design of the personal tampon collection device, which the office ladies found too ostentatious. Tony pitches the tampon recycling program to a group of women at a local yoga studio. At first the women are skeptical, but eventually they warm up to Tony, and ultimately provide him with a few useful take-aways. Tony heads back to the office, and updates Tom, who is happy with the work Tony's done and the information he collected through his pilot program and yoga studio pitch. They may not have a brand on board yet, but Tony's certainly made significant headway. Later, when Dara returns from maternity leave, Dean is thrilled to have his friend and lunch companion back.

Barking Over Parking

Fri, Aug 28, 201522 mins

When Tom challenges the Marketing team to develop a creative way to promote their upcoming program launch with a pet food brand, Albe appoints Steph, a new addition to his department, as the Project Manager. Steph pitches an idea for a dog photo-shoot as a way to promote the new partnership. The team loves the idea, and decides to have Design create upcycled outfits made from pet food packaging for the dogs. At the monthly all-staff meeting, Bryan, a new member of the Zero Waste team, is awarded Employee of the Month. Tom reveals his added perk of a prime parking spot, which Dan quickly realizes is his unofficial spot. That leaves only two parking spaces right in front of the office for Dan, Diandra, and Dean to fight over. The parking war gets fierce until Dara suggests they try to win Employee of the Month to secure that prime spot. Dan, Diandra, and Dean refocus their attention on work. With the pet food brand photo-shoot just around the corner, the Design team has a chaotic fitting with the dogs. Steph feels the pressure when she has difficulty wrangling the dogs and learns that her photographer has to back out. This is her fist time as project manager, and she doesn't want to let the team down. Dean kindly agrees to step in as the photographer, and even though the day of the photo-shoot is hectic, Dean is able to get great photos. Steph and her team attach recycling tips to the cute dog photos to complete the marketing campaign. Steph, Tom, and Albe pitch the marketing campaign to the pet food brand, who's enthusiastic and eager to move forward with the launch. At the next monthly all-staff meeting, Tom announces that Steph is the new Employee of the Month. Dean, Diandra, and Dan are disappointed by the loss: only one of them needed to secure the title for all of them to have prime parking. However, as a thank you for helping with the photo shoot, Steph gives Dean her parking spot. The parking spot war is over!

Kid N'Playground

Fri, Sep 4, 201521 mins

Tom is challenged to come up with a creative way to highlight an oral care brand brigade for Earth Day. He suggests that they create a playground out of oral care waste and give it to the local school that can collect the most oral care waste. However, TerraCycle has a difficult challenge ahead: they'll need to determine whether they can make the playground in time for the fast approaching Earth Day. Tom assigns Andrew as Project Manager since they are up against a tough deadline and limited budget. The pressure is on Stephan to find enough oral care waste material, and on Rick to find a formulation for the waste that's durable enough for a playground. When Karina brings her daughter Olivia to work, Tom, who's expecting his first child, sees a learning opportunity and convinces Karina to let him watch Olivia for the day. While Olivia spends time in Tom's office, Andrew stops by to give Tom an update on the playground. Tom tells Andrew (along with encouragement from young Olivia) that they need to double the size of the playground. Nervous about the new request, Andrew quickly tells Rick and Stephen about Tom's new directive and demands positive results. Fortunately, Stephan is able to hunt down more oral care waste, and Rick finds the perfect formulation. But Andrew continues to be anxious about the limited time and insists Rick and Stephan call the manufacturer. Much to Andrew's delight, the manufacturer confirms that they will be done processing the material soon and the playground will be built on time. It's finally Earth Day, and Tom, Andrew, Rick, and Stephen head to Beloved Charter School to see the completed playground for the first time. Tom is happy with the result and the hard work of his staff; the team proudly presents the playground to a group of excited children.

Tom surprises Stephen and Steph by asking them to join him on a business trip to London. Stephen will advise the UK team on a closed loop program for a coffee brand and their T-Discs, while Steph will learn the ins and outs of public collections to help inform its future launch in the U.S. Once in London, Steph heads to a local supermarket that serves as a public collection location for Terracycle UK, where she meets with volunteers who are an integral part of the public program. Back in the UK office, Stephen learns that the manufacturer is hesitant to use the recycled T-Disc plastic because the aluminum content might hurt their machines. Stephen sends the manufacturer vital information to prove the aluminum will have no effect on the manufacturer's machines. After a successful call, and some great convincing from Stephen, the manufacturer agrees to make a sample from the T-Disc plastic waste, which is critical for the meeting with the coffee brand. Meanwhile in Trenton, the office is disrupted when the Internet stops working. As a temporary solution to the problem, the TC team secretly relocates to Tom's house, where they find working Internet and comfortable surroundings. Rhandi, Dan and Tom (from London) have a call to discuss a presentation deck they've made about the public collection program. Tom approves the deck, but questions their whereabouts when he hears Tia barking in the background. Stephen's nervous about his meeting to present the T-Disc plan with the coffee brand, but the meeting goes smoothly, and the coffee brand is excited to move forward with the closed loop program. Steph completes her research on UK public collections and is hopeful she can bring her new knowledge back to the US. With their time in London coming to a close, Tom, Stephen, Steph, and the UK team meet to discuss their successes from the past few days. Tom is pleased with everyone's hard work and gives Stephen and Steph the afternoon off to do some sightseeing.

Tom gathers the staff together and announces that TerraCycle has recently partnered with a sports energy brand. In an effort to promote this new partnership, Terracycle and the brand will be supporting a local race event, Run-a-palooza. Tom tasks Tiff and her Design team with creating an "experience booth" to showcase upcycled products created from the energy brand waste. To further support the partnership, Tom enlists Rhandi and Dan to set-up Zero Waste boxes at the race to help make the event waste-free. Tom puts Tiff in charge of overseeing the whole project from the "experience booth" to Zero Waste operations. Tom unsuccessfully tries to recruit staffers to run in the race. He finally manages to convince Sara, Rick, and Stephen to join him. Dean agrees to "coach". While the Design team works on the upcycled items, Tiff is overwhelmed at the prospect of managing the Zero Waste program as well. When Dan hands off a stack of Zero Waste and Event reading material, it does little to calm her nerves. Her worries intensify when Tiff learns that Dan will be unable to help out at the race due to injury outside the office. It's the day of the Runapalooza Expo, and Tiff and Darshan arrive at Asbury Park to set up the booth. Tom's team picks up their bibs for the race, and stop by the booth. The race gets off to a great start, while Tiff and Darshan open their booth to the public. Tom's team finishes the race and head over to the TC booth, where Tom congratulates Tiff on a job well done. Toy Meets World

Fri, Sep 25, 201521 mins

An all natural personal care brand comes to Tom Szaky and the Terracycle team with a unique challenge: they want to begin to recycle items outside of their own waste stream - broken toys. After a meeting with the brand, Tom lets the staff know that they will be using the current Zero Waste Platform to collect the toys. He puts Rhandi in charge of the upcoming task. But with her department already spread thin, Stephen is assigned to help her reach the goal of determining the best way to process the broken toys. Immediately it becomes apparent that the toys can either be upcycled or recycled, and that Rhandi and Stephen are not on the same page when it comes to which process is best suited for the brand. Meanwhile, Tom has tasked Darshan and Dean to outfit the new Finance Room with a more creative Terracycle look and feel. The project is delayed due to Tom's absence after the birth of his son, Leo. Luckily, Tom has come up with a creative solution to allow him to be a presence at work, but physically at home with his family: a telepresence robot. With his face on a constant videoconference, he can motor through the office checking on everyone's progress. After Rhandi meets with Tiffany, she is convinced that upcycling is the way to manage the broken toys waste stream. Not only can design handle the volume, but it's also a great showcase for the possibility of recycling unconventional waste. However, Stephen's past expertise has taught him otherwise. He's knows the strong plastic used to make the toys can be a valuable commodity. With these two at an impasse, Tom leaves it to Andrew to determine which is more cost effective for the brand. Recycling comes out as the clear winner, but Tom decides that there will be enough toys for upcycling as well. Unsatisfied with his robotic self, Tom has to adapt to being the CEO of a worldwide company and a brand new father. Striking a balance isn't easy, but it's a new way of life both for Tom and the entire Terracycle staff

No Ifs Ands or Butts

Fri, Oct 2, 201521 mins

Tom wants to make smaller, higher-end products out of recycled cigarette butts as a way to increase revenue and reduce the cost of their current cigarette butt waste program. Rick and Ernie will need to change the current formula so that the recycled material is strong enough to make smaller products, while Stephen must find a manufacturer who's willing to use the new material. Rick asks Andrew for his used cigarette butts to test, but to everyone's surprise, Andrew reveals that he's quit smoking. Rick knows how difficult it will be to create a new formula and is unconvinced that it needs to be changed. He is frustrated further when his first tests yield bad results. Stephen has had better luck and finds a plastics manufacturer who's willing to discuss using the recycled cigarette butts. Stephen meets with a manufacturer and gets the chance to test the original cigarette plastic formula. They try to make a soap dish sample using the original pellets, but it comes out misshapen. Turns out Rick will need to create a new formula after all. At first people around the office notice the positive change in Andrew since he quit smoking, but when he starts to experience the lows, he becomes anxious and uses food to replace cigarettes. During a meeting about the price of the soap dish, Andrew's temper gets the better of him, and he storms out. Steph encourages Andrew to give himself a reward if he's smoke free for 30 days. Back in the lab, Tom is not impressed by the quality of the plastic soap dish and pressures Rick to find that perfect formulation. After another failed formula, Rick has a breakthrough. He crushes the pellets to make them smaller and easier to integrate into the plastic. The manufacturer is pleased and confirms that they will use the recycled waste to make new products. Tom is impressed with the perfected soap dish and that Andrew has successfully been smoke-free for 30 days. Andrew rewards himself with a fancy fishing pole.
