Episode 1

Charlie explains to Sarah on the third anniversary how he got paired with Rex, as his K9 handler was semi-accidentally shot dead while chasing a kidnapper in the forest. Rex wouldn't leave his master nor allow forensic investigation, until Charlie made friends with food and kindness. The K9 command was to put Rex down 'standard practice', but Charlie got permission at least two day to track down the kidnapper and missing pre-teen, who turn out the stake of a battle between a false ID mother on the run, traitor art teacher and ex-con father's henchman. Rex does great and finds a new home on Charlie's couch and the station furniture, sanctioned on trial by the K9 and chief Donovan appointing single-living Charlie his happy handler.

Episode 2
Charlie is curiously shy to tackle the escape from prison transport of convicted murderer Danny Winters. It was his childhood buddy when they were rascals partners in mischief, whose father dropped him coldly. Now Danny is determined to prove his innocence, gets Charlie at gunpoint and blackmails him to use Rex's canine senses to help track down the video that may clear his name. However the real murderers sent a hitman with a rifle, who now threatens the trio. Charlie and Rex still get to the truth.

Episode 3
An unidentified male adolescent corpse is found mummified in a tundra cave, the only clue being a page from the Count of Monte Christo. Jesse's research indicates it's Heath, one of several people who discretely withdrew into a wilderness 'survivalist' community, Charlie and Rex force their only known visitor, a photo journalist, to fill him in on the recluses. Then the duo sets out to find them, but Charlie is cut off after his car and phone are disabled, and makes a fall, only to be nursed at the camp. There he must find out whose friendly welcome is criminally fake and about to strike again. Sarah meanwhile accompanies friendly ranger Kendra O'Dore to find them and Jesse digs deeper.

Episode 4
Patrolling the beach where a scuba diver washed up, asphyxiated from a severed oxygen tube, Charlie has Rex halt accountant Barry Lysiak, who was snooping around he victim's car, and still triggers the remote to make it explode, then refuses to talk in jail. The victim just broke up with fellow environmentalist activist Lucia Cruz, who repeatedly changes her story. ex's nose ties them to fishery captain Jack Swift, who seems involved in cod quota circumvention, but actually was dragged into international arms smuggling.

Episode 5
Socialite Briane Peters is hospitalized after her coffee was poisoned during a TV event to raise $3 million for her medical supplies charity. PA Myles Hossan points out she had some row with the NGO's deputy Garvey, who is found murdered at home, knocked down but actually OD'ed from another poison, while Rex has to be rushed to the vet as his upper-nose also incurs tenfold effect from the opioid he detected. A handmade notebook cover links to activist Dana Mulvey, whom Jesse personally approaches being a former college buddy, only to be knocked down as she flees. Recovered Rex tracks her down in a secret illegal generic medication lab, complicating the web of lies Charlie and Jesse untangle to arrest the master fraudster.

Episode 6
After Leanne Davidow reports her daughter missing, apparently abducted after a scream, SJPD reopens the never solved abduction and murder of another girl years ago, from that very secluded spot. Team Rex focuses on the two original suspects, while Sarah must reconsider the time of death and hence all alibis. Zach Richmond, who apparently straightened out his life in between thanks to his wife Molly, is covered by her, but Charlie digs in the present abduction, smelling a rat even without Rex 's nose.

Episode 7
Responding to a brief call from his former informant Karl Buell, an Afghanistan veteran broiled in drug trade, Joe finds him fatally wounded, unable to say more the 'Tross'. The only DNA found on him matches Rex, who as with Charlie, so he sets out to find the only canine brothers, Otto who needs a blood transplant and twin Bucky. Owner Larissa Slade was Karl's therapist and clarifies the dying reference is to fellow patient Trent 'Albatros' Ross, Karl's most unlucky company comrade in Afghanistan. He's scared but clearly embroiled by slick drug baron Randy Sher, whom Joe never could catch. But after suspension, Rex and Charlie manage, albeit at great peril and with canine assistance on top of (T)Ross's.

Episode 8
A girl from Rick Dobran's event agency playing a fairy princess at a birthday party for spoiled girls dies from poisoning. Team Charlie and Rex's nose investigate Corbin Lewis's host family and their guests, having had opportunity, and Rick's staff, while it may not even have been the intended target.

Episode 9
Charlie doesn't boast his part in the arrest of an international serial killer five years ago. Walking home with Rex as his car is in for repairs, they get animal drug-gunned and abducted. Charlie wakes up buried alive, yet communicates clues through the camera inside used by the abductor, who demands $500,000, which Sarah and Joe try to raise against expressed policy, as Jesse picks up the signal. Rex manages to escape and return. He tracks down the logical suspect accomplice, only to find him buried murdered. Charlie is dug up by the surprising real culprits, whom he tries to explain their vengeance is absurd, while Rex helps the rescue party track them down after Jesse found crucial links.

Episode 10
Businessman Shawn Meuller had many friends, no known enemies, yet dies when his car is blown up in his garage by a bomb. The detonator and MO point to recently paroled, yet till now non-violent paroled pyromaniac Richie Turner. Even Charlie and Rex have a hard time catching elusive hooded prowler package-thief Connor Meadows (18), but believe him non-violent and a key witness. The killer keeps striking. Turner denies and was caught by former insurance investigator Phil Cummings, who later proves fresh widow Leah's lover and more. Jesse was ignored at a municipal party by paramedic Veena Kalvak, who now shows interest in Rex, so he doesn't correct her assumption to be his owner to score a dog walking weekend date.

Episode 11
Developer Terrance Oswald is murdered in the bloody way, market X in red paint, of a serial killer who died in jail five years ago, but forensics now find that wasn't suicide, which Joe's predecessor Arlo Lawson seems to have covered up after steering the investigation. All his alleged victims were involved in a previous real estate company, whose shady deals at the expanse of the local Miqmac First Nation, whose feisty Kiera Lafold, daughter of the murdered tribal chief at the time, makes the perfect prime suspect, well too perfect, even the very same decommissioned paint was used, as in the native community center she runs. Old-fashioned, domineering Terrance's managerial rival in the company, Mia Bailey, seems another, but is murdered the same way, his son and troubled heir Andrew Oswald is presumed the next likely victim.

Episode 12
Charlie is much less interested then Rex in TV reports on the annual St.Johns dog show, a coveted ticket to the national competition circuit. That changes when a contestant-owner is fatally stabbed on site. The team now sniffs bitter contestant rivalry and the organizers/jury with its flamboyant queer chairman, but the killer strikes again.

Episode 13
Charlie, Rex and Sarah attend her buddy Fiona Matthews and husband Russel's housewarming party but everybody is trapped by a storm and Fi is nearly poisoned by the toast wine. Jesse misses his horror movie quiz nigh to do the research by phone, getting Joe to first condone, then join in handling the game multi-tasked, which actually inspires. While Sarah and recovered junkie guest Dean Cody's extra dose of Naloxon save Fiona, Charlie sequesters and interview all guests. Programmer Tori Hawley misses out on the royalties for the app hat made Fiona rich, sommelier Laura Benante has an affair with Russel, notary Grace Buckley, who came formalize the house sale at the party, probably tried to sneak out, in short everybody lies. The killer strikes again in whiskey and team Charlie duly suspects Fi wasn't the initial target even before a mystery corpse is found.
Episode 14
Jesse puts the PD on the disappearance of his close gaming buddy Levi Gill, but soon finds his style still active using avatars in a lucrative competition. Team Charlie meanwhile finds that Levi not only has a pregnant bride Bonnie Squire, but also a second life as Armie Modi, husband of Rainey Gill and daughter Scout. Rex's nose follows several trails, leading to Levi's kidnappers.
Episode 15
Margot 'the Magnificent' was found fatally strangled by deliberately knotted ropes part of her signature box transfer trick, but at second sight that's staged, she was strangled before, possibly with another string. She was one of three Canadian finalists for the Howie award for upcoming magicians, training months in St.John's before the winner gets a Las Vegas contract. Charlie investigates the surviving rivals: Talon Dwyer with whom she had or faked a secret affair, and Amal Khan, who dated her ambitious assistant Holly Wei, who was duped with a fake invitation to the greatest professional club, for access to the trade secrets. Rex's nose also finds Margot's secret weapon, a separately adopted twin sister, who had her own bone to pick. Meanwhile Rex's twin Otto is tested for aptitude as assistance dog and forensic analyst Sarah is finally short-listed for the Scotland Yard dream job she applied for shortly after graduation.
Episode 16
Charlie and Rex witness a masked bank robbery, and soon realize it's not just the third in a short time, but each time a branch employee is set up as stooge. They found two false witness links, both silver spoon kid artists: siren Anastasia 'Annie' Liu-Kang and Marksamus Sanford, who uses different name variations as aliases and personas, such as busker, but the loot is chicken feed given their tycoon fathers. Also involved is dodgy P.I. David Mason, whom Charlie manages to lean on and outsmart. However the family car crash that killed Mark's mother years ago also yielded a crucial cue to his motivation.
