In St.John's, superintendent Joe Donovan puts his best serious crimes detective, Charlie Hudson, on the kidnapping of a schoolgirl, whom PD nerd Jesse identifies as Evelyn, teen daughter of retired hit-man Leonard Boonstra. Charlie's canine partner Rex saw it happen and sneakily followed, hidden in the back of Mickey Loman's truck, by ferry to an island, to keep an eye on her till he can get in. The team works out Leonard is blackmailed to shoot the key witness at the impending review hearing, where crime lord Rupert Mankiewicz is sure to obtain liberty, even implies coming after Charlie who demanded help. Rex proves invaluable in liberating the girl, Jesse's heroic panic saves the witness.

After 'Birdy' falls to his death doing another parkour stunt on a popular, anonymous website, Hudson must work out who are the masked members of the daredevils bunch. Rex's nose helps track them down, with present and past motives for rivalry, even involving Internet investor Mark Trainor. Meanwhile the captain helps Rex overcome the official police dog trainer's objections to Charlie remaining his only handler, but he signs up for a course.

Investigating a false supernatural suggestion on father Xavier's cemetery, simpleton 'ghost buster' Floyd Walker bumps onto the badly injured local Nancy Rubic, whose pre-teen brother Malcolm went missing years ago. Whilse Charlie looks into everyone's antecedents, including a neighboring ex-con sex offender, Rex finds the boy's old corpse under a slab. Superintendant Joe Donovan also asks Charlie to check if his teen daughter's sneaking off means real trouble, notably drugs.

Controversial professor Sharpe's student assistant Toby finds him fatally throat-slit in their lecture hall, party scene drugs are involved. As the culprit probably was an academic, forensic tech genius Jesse Mills's youth makes him the only team member able to go undercover as a student ad gets a warm welcome from dorm monitor Kevin. Sarpe's anti-woke profile made him a prime target for the movement against sexual abuse on campus, which proves complexly rooted.

While walking in the park the dog of a client who is overseas long-term, penniless single pet-sitter Brooklyn Weber is impaled on a tree. Rex finds the pouch she walked, who bites Charlie, who looks into the clients and their secrets, but also her sister Naomi, whose husband Scott Turner caused a rift by demanding rent, and her secretive love life with homeless loser Robbie McCann and an adulterer.

Charlie Hudson investigates, just to appease her, the retirement home where resident aunt Miranda, who helped raise him, claimed a string of recent deaths to be suspicious. While everyone cuddles Rex, Hudson and his Halifax forensic team find several actually suspicious deaths, not just sic elderly patients, and a suspicious mortality pattern among residents. Alert Miranda keeps inviting herself as not amused Charlie's illegal third partner.

Charlie alerts SWAT when forensic tech Sarah Truong manages to send him a brief text while she and all staff are held at gunpoint by a man who intruded the high security lab where her college friend and senior scientist Sebastian Todd do research, even on super-dangerous viruses, yet is only interested in the files on an aborted drug test, which he believes wrecked his family.Charlie gets hep to train Rex for a unique solo-intervention, interacting with Sarah. After hostages are hurt and the dog's collar camera is discovered, Charlie goes in as paramedic.

After reviled celeb restaurateur Neil Dougherty's food truck explodes, killing one of his employees, which proves previous suspicious accidents are sabotage weren't innocent at all, Charlie and Rex find themselves with a few too many suspects, who may target the competition, Neil or his staff individually. A flirtation has Charlie torn between a possible new love and Rex's reaction.

Charlie needs Rex's nose to investigate suspects including Vicky Harrisson, host of a local morning show, after her media mogul husband Chris was suddenly found dead, peanut being sprayed into the studio air-co to activate his extreme allergy. Son and heir Tad accuses his stepmother, whose record looks like a black widow, so Charlie looks into two previous husbands' deaths. So did private eye David Mason, who was hired by Tad but turns out to be a serial blackmailer, who later gets murdered himself. Rex inadvertently makes himself and Charlie TV stars.

Charlie must interrupt his date, receiving art-loving forensic technician Sarah, to investigate with Rex the murder of an art gallery curator during a robbery at his modern art gallery, where only one piece was stolen. They must work out where it went, who took it, if the target was the victim or the art, which now raises in value, while the gallery was under financial stress and offered a takeover by a wealthy 'benefactor', what about rivalry in the artist's study, with an ambitious apprentice who has access. Rex's nose adds a hidden compartment in a sculpture's base.

Environmental activist is found skull-smashed at night in the rural water bottling plant which his group accuses of pollution and fraud, having got access by key card. Manager Rosalynn Evans and staff claim to ignore who was involved, denying there's anything to prove. Charlie and Rex go after his fellow activist Allora Crawford, whom he gives informal shelter at home, tended and guarded by Sarah, after they and a local cop were shot at her forest hideout. A skilled killer after her ends up caught and confesses to easily, counseled by the plant's expensive law firm, but Rex's nose finally tracks down all hidden evidence.

Episode 12

Superintendent Donovan's ex, recovering addict Wendy Larson, wakes up with blood on her hands and alcohol and pill bottles on the table. She finds former friend and fellow ex-addict Diandra Popovich dead in the next room. Team Charlie moves quickly, finding there's more to the story, which revolves around Laura Klume's reputed rehab clinic Excellium, which uses sect indoctrination methods, according to reporter "Martin Booker," which turns out to be the undercover alias of ex-alcoholic, Excellium security guard Jay Piper.

Rex goes wild at the site of a car crash that killed teen Lonny, who turn out the buddy and passenger of joyrider Dante, who illegally repossessed the car his ex kept unfairly, and insists the crash was caused by a strange blue light from the sky. Jesse comes along to ask about the 'alien passage' and the bizarre piece of electronic found on the spot to ghost hunter Tyler and the technology expert both and Sara admire, Graham Pry, who pretends to ignore whether it's a capacitor, while Jesse finds he patented it, and if it's part of en EMP project, which is highly unlikely, yet perhaps the only explanation for numerous reported events in the area, so Charlie questions Tyler's list. Later Graham dies in arson at home, while Rex's newly-learned Frisbee catching skill proves crucial in tracking down a suspicious truck and the drone controlled from it.
